message 1607: by Mary (new)

Mary Hi, to everyone. My name is Mary. I still class myself as a young adult and impressionable. I'm the only person in my family that reads: they laugh at me. I started out with run-of-the-mill thrillers: I shan't mention titles. My family would say, "Why waste your time and money. Watch the film."
I am the youngest in the family and I lived in a small house with all my brothers, my mum and her boyfriend. My brothers are just thugs: never work, sit in front of the telly all day, drink, fight and cause trouble. My mum and her boyfriend are little better.

I used to work in a supermarket (shelf-stacker) and read on the bus when going to and from work. An elderly gent used to say, "hello," whenever he saw me and once asked about my book. I wasn't too complimentary. He said, "A good book teaches you something." That comment put me on a path to learn from my reading. A short time after, I joined Goodreads and since have moved to live with a lady who once taught English and History. Her son, who I think must be on first name terms with just about everyone in the country, found me a job in a garden centre and paid for me to go to Open University; where I'm reading History.

I'm in my first year and so studying like mad.

My life has changed, I am the luckiest girl in the world and all because of a man on a bus.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Mary & welcome!

Don't let anyone laugh at you because of reading. Usually, it's time wisely spent, especially if you derive not only pleasure but something useful out of it too.
Good luck with your studies and I hope you'll have more of those lucky and fateful encounters :)

Hope, you'll enjoy our company and share your insight and maybe what's up the "thugs" every once in a while :)

message 1612: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments I did. This makes sense:
"....After Mao’s death in 1976, CCP leadership agreed that the “command economy” Mao learned from Stalin had resulted in disaster for China. Perhaps 50M people died of starvation because of Mao’s ill-informed and rigid economic policies.

The new policy of the CCP economic reformers, following the thought of Deng Xiaoping, puts in place a Middle Way between Smith and Stalin. The intent of this policy is to free the entrepreneurial spirit in China just enough so that the resulting modernized economy could become the basis for a “common prosperity.” "
"...The Visible Hand of the CCP has recently begun to curb the selfish excesses of the nouveau riche and start reducing inequality. Xi Jinping’s crackdown on corruption curbs the privileged use of government that the rich have enjoyed, and which they used to become rich...."

Philip (philipspires) | 2 comments Hello group. My name is Philip. I am British, live in Spain and I write and read when I have time. I do have a new book ready to go, where it has stayed for a year for no particular reason. The last one, Eileen McHugh, a life remade is free and is available from http://philipspires.co.uk/eileen.htm where there is also more about me. I write a review of every book I finish, largely to clarify what I think it was trying to say. I'm retired and listen to a lot of music as well. Hello again!

My favorite genres are science, psychology, science fiction, historical nonfiction, and philosophy and my favorite book is The Martian by Andy Weir. Still trying to figure out how this app works… hope to have some great discussions with you all !!

Nobody likes using the app. The regular site is easier to use.

Brad Good I used to work in Hong Kong with a company that had its origins in the opium trade. That lead me to China where I started to live in 1988, when it most resembled North Korea. After investing all over the country, I finally returned (to Austin) after having spent COVID in a lovely city called Dali (Yunnan Province). Just this week I launch a four novel series based on contemporary China, called THE CHINA AFFAIRS. Hello to everyone. It is a joy to be here.

Vicki | 3 comments Hi everyone!
And thanks for the invitation, Nik!

A little about myself: I’m from rural MA, where I reside with my husband and four children. For over a decade I have been chipping away at an English and Literature degree on and off (as being a mom took priority), currently I am in my third year with plans to power through the last portion. I do not affiliate myself with a particular political party as I do not agree 100% with either of the two primary parties’ ideologies. I welcome conversations of opposing or similar views that challenge me intellectually and have the ability to possibly change my stance given appropriate, factual or academic proof.
I look forward to participating in discussions about world, writing, and wealth!

Vicki

I became an author during the latter part of a long career in management, finally taking my high school English teacher's advice that I could and should write. My first novel, THE HERETIC, was published in 2000 when I was 60; my 7th novel, AFTER AUSCHWITZ, was published in June 2021.

Maria Bouroncle | 2 comments Hi everyone,

Thanks for inviting me to the group! My name is Maria Bouroncle and I’m a Swedish writer of true crime living in Washington DC.

My debut “It Came to Me on a Whim – The Story of Ingeborg Andersson, Child Murderess” tells the story of my great-aunt who killed her three children at the age of twenty-seven in 1929. It was recently published in English and this fall it will be used on the Scandinavian Crime Literature course at UCLA.

If anyone is interested in writing a review, do let me know and I’d be happy to send you a PDF version!

All the best, Maria

Inaccurate history is just "story" :) Ambitious of you to pursue all those degrees at once. Good luck with all these aspirations, although opening a coffee shop doesn't require unrelated studies :)

Nevertheless, hope all your plans come to fruition and you'll enjoy and contribute here, in uni and elsewhere...

Do you align yourself with Ukraine, by which I mean are you a supporter of Ukraine in her fight against Russia's invasion? Often times Ukrainian history gets mistold to improve Russia's image. From what it sounds like you took a lot of care in your writing, I look forward to reading your work!
