Paul Wardle | 2 comments Morning all,

Thanks for my invite to the group. I am new to Goodreads so I am still navigating my way around the site (in other words, I'm pretty clueless!)

I have lived and worked in Manchester for over twenty years now. The city and its stories was a major inspiration for my first novella. I'll post a link below in case you are interested.

My writing generally focuses on life and toils when surrounded by poverty and deprivation. I have worked in the inner-city and some of the most deprived places of the North and these experiences have inspired my creativity.

I'm now enjoying writing a full length manuscript that will explore toxic masculinity within working class culture.

I'm looking forward to contributing to the group.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Paul & welcome!

So, City or United? :) Not that the answer will impair our hospitality.
Sounds like you explore and share interesting themes.

Good luck with the published work and with the one in progress.

Hope you'll enjoy it here and contribute to the ongoing discussions, literary ones and those - not quite

message 1555: by Paul (new)

Paul Wardle | 2 comments Neither, I'm afraid! I am not a football man - which makes me nothing short of an outcast in a city like Manchester! :-)

message 1556: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments So you've managed to develop an immunity to football virus. You are still welcome here :)

Hi Indira,
As much as I love international affairs our internal ones here designate this thread for introductions rather than promotion of other sites. You can reinstate your post to "announcement section" and say a few words about yourself here instead.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

Hi Carolyn & welcome!

I can't believe I'm late to greet you by almost a month. Anyhow, better late than never :)
"Romantic" and "murder" sound like mutually exclusive words, yet you somehow manage to reconcile them.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute to the discussions

I'm an author of fictional tales who derives my inspiration from my observations of everything human. As to why I desired to join this group, well, I'm an author, I hope to drum up interest in my work, and so thank you, to those who've provided a space where I might do that. message 1589: by Linda (new)

Linda Cromartie | 1 comments Hi Nik,
Thank you for adding me to this group. I am a late bloomer who has self-published one mystery and is working on a sequel to release late spring. The mysteries are set in a small valley and the surrounding mountains in North Carolina, but the topics can be found in news around the world. Writing has always been important to me, and I am so happy to have time to write. Unfortunately, my interest in daily news updates and currently in Olympics ice skating often eats into my morning writing time. I have different strategies to overcome these distractions, and I'll be happy to share them in a later post. Of course, I also would love to hear how you all cope with distraction. Ruth McCoy (pen name)/Linda Cromartie

message 1590: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Linda and Ruth & welcome!

Good luck with the upcoming release. It would be a pity to skip olympic skating, distraction or not 😎 The real beauty is to master balancing business/writing & pleasure. It’s an excellent idea to open a threat about this theme. Feel free to set up one.

Hope you’ll enjoy and contribute to the discussions

David Gustafson Good morning from David and Las Vegas.

I am a writer, a calligrapher-turned abstract artist turning classical botanical artist.

As a youth, I grew up in the woods and the fields with my family/hunting dog listening to the trees whispering to God.

Although I did not come from a musical family, I was immediately attracted to the classical Western canon of music and acquired an impressive collection of records while I was still in my teens. Unfortunately, I was too busy playing sports and hunting and fishing to study music or play an instrument until recently when I acquired a keyboard. Finally!

I am a hopeless history nerd. Anything from ancient history, to Roman Judea to the middle ages to the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century so naturally I have acquired a working knowledge economics.

Psssst…I am also a recreational poker player. See you at the final table!

message 1592: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi David and welcome!

You sound like a multifaceted person and I hope we have enough threads to offer to cover many of your fields of interest be they music, history or economics. I regularly play cards online, but hasn't figured out yet how to embed this option onto goodreads :)

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

message 1593: by David (new)

David Gustafson Thank you so much for the invitation to join, Nik. I will follow the comments for awhile before I jump into the waters and contribute.

Happy to join the group. I'm primarly focused on reading/learning about investing, finance, and management. I run 3 small travel companies and look forward to learning from you all!

Cheers.

message 1595: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Jared & welcome!

I imagine travel must’ve been hit by corona and now flight routes are being reshuffled through war and sanctions. Challenging times.
Hope you’ll derive something useful and share back with us your own wisdom and experience

message 1596: by Howard (new)

Howard Hill | 3 comments Hello, I'm Howard. I am a retired bibliophile who could spend an entire day reading and I have - often. I also enjoy the outdoors, traveling, fishing, watching football (American), mushroom foraging, walking with my dogs, and just hanging out.
I have a great, long-suffering wife of 47 years named Jackie, two grown kids, Amber and Dylan, and two dogs, Sophie and Duncan.
I enjoy a wide range of genres, but my favorites are Historical Fiction, History non-fiction, and mysteries.
As for group participation, I don't usually get into discussions unless I am really fired up about a topic, but I like to lurk and see what the "intellectual" take (to quote Annie) is on world events.

message 1597: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Howard & welcome!

I like your lifestyle :) Sounds like an excellent balance between intellectual, physical and recreational pastime!
I hope we'll get you "fired up" every once in a while, but lurking and observing is also perfectly cool :)

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute at times

message 1598: by Jimp (new)

Jimp | 1 comments Hello Group, I was invited in by Nik Krasno.
James Patrick, I'm known by all as 'Jimp' - my elder brothers started that (short for JimmyP) and so it was carried over to school and then my adult life. My wife-to-be, when we first met, thought it most funny. Jimp, I find from her, [a Norwegian], in the English dictionary means: scant, slender and I am slender [long-distance runner slender]. A sport I love and love much more as it helped break the ice when I met Tordis (Tor): an angel. Tor she told me means Thor. I'm most fascinated by thriller/suspense - fiction/non-fiction and have always taken an interest in books concerning the modern history of Europe and of late more the second war and the years post those dark times. If anyone has recommendations, I would be most grateful. Happy reading to all.

message 1599: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi James/Jimp (if that's how you are known by all, I don't think we should be an exception) and welcome!

Hmm... I know a couple of thrillers with European historical background, but I'd rather shut up :)
I, myself, am reading one now taking place in Oslo.

Hope you'll enjoy, contribute and run a long distance with us

message 1600: by Mark (new)

Mark Howells | 1 comments Hello! Firstly thanks to Nik for inviting me to this group! I'm new to Good Reads and I've just released my debut novel Pride: Four people wounded by life, bond in a camp amongst lions.

I have spent six months in Africa rehabilitating rescued lions back to the wild. I'm also interested in psychology and my day job involves helping people with drug / alcohol addictions get their lives back on track.

I'm quite proud of my debut novel, as I believe it offers hope and resilience to readers. I managed to cover many topics that interest me, mainly lions and unmasking of toxic masculinity in our culture.

By the same token, I believe everyone has amazing stories and I love listening to other people's stories (fictional or otherwise). I think we all like to be inspired and that's the main reason why I joined here.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better.

Mark.
