Graeme Rodaughan Hi, Terese. Welcome to the group. Always good to find another philosopher amongst us.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Terese & welcome!

We too hope to be a fit :)
Bottom line - a lot is philosophy and we'll be looking forward to your philosophical as well as theological input on different topics.
BTW, we often mention Sweden on a corona thread, but feels like it was underrepresented, if you'd want to fill this gap.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

Parag (para3g) Hello Everyone, I'm Parag from India.

I recently quit a fairly long career in software development to be a writer. I have a master's degree in Computer Science, which in retrospect feels like a mistake :-)

If I had another chance, I would study literature and journalism. I guess I'm giving myself that 'second chance' now. I've signed up for a bunch of online writing courses and an online literature course to start with.

I'm trying to figure out the genres I'd like to write in. Starting with short stories and will soon write non-fiction about "renewable energy and electric vehicles". I don't know much about this field yet but it's a topic I am very interested in.

Thanks for hosting this group - it feels like a wonderful place.

Hi Parag & welcome!

Yeah, trading a paying job for writer's destiny may be a little haphazard :), but nonetheless I wish you every success on that path! A second chance is a fair game.

Hope you'll enjoy, share your progress and contribute to the discussions

Hi Parag, welcome to the group. Enjoy.

Parag (para3g) Hi Nik, thanks for the welcome!

Yes, a bit rash to quit a well-paying job for a writer's destiny. I loved software when I started 20 years back but in the past few years, every line of code felt an added straw on my back. I guess the last straw happened in 2020 :-)

I'm looking forward to the writer's life. I know it won't be easy but it will be worth it.

Looking forward to learning and sharing here...

Karen Ess | 1 comments Hello there. I enjoy participating in making the world a kinder place, and in thinking through issues relating to how we can do that.

I am an author, and online course-creator, and enjoy living a very simple, peaceful life in the midst of a very busy city.

I love organic gardening, making compost!! (yes, actually!), and finding ways to help democratise wealth.

I will only respond to posts very sporadically, as I do not enjoy the best of health all the time, but I will enjoy seeing what this group has to offer!

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Karen & welcome!

Making the world kinder is a worthy goal, unless someone (not you) applies a machine-gun for this purpose :)
Wealth $ gardening are very frequent guests in our discussions. Feel free to contribute, whenever you have a chance.
Hope you’ll get better and enjoy your membership

Andrew Graham (andrewjamesgraham) | 11 comments Hi My name is Andrew James Graham.

I live in the North Tyneside area of Newcastle upon tyne (England)

I joined Goodreads to hopefully discover some different authors and some brilliant recommendations for must reads.

I usually read the gritty dark British Police dectective novels, my favorite authors being Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson and Peter James, but I also enjoy the underworld Gangster type novels by Martina Cole and Stephen Leather.

I also hope you can advise me on any other groups I could join to share my views on crime thrillers, there are loads out there but I'm not sure which ones are the best for conversation.

I look forward to interacting with you all in the future.
Regards
Andrew James Graham

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Hi, Andrew. I, too enjoy Rankin and Billingham, just finished a couple. I'll have to look for Robinson and James. There are a couple of groups you might want to try: The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group and the Crime, Mysteries & Thrillers group. They're both very active. Welcome and hope to see you around!
You, too, Belynda!

James Conway | 4 comments Good Day,

My name is James N. Conway and I am a writer. Currently and during the past few years, I have mostly been venturing around Afghanistan, occasionally bumping into insurgents, secret police officers, and diplomats.

Given my love for espionage novels and the realisation that there are few, if any spy thrillers with a non-Western perspective set in Afghanistan and/or Central Asia, I attempted to change this and wrote Cross-Border, a spy novel with non-Western characters mainly set in Afghanistan and Tajikistan (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...).

As I am new to goodreads, I am looking forward to see what the community here has to offer. So please reach out if you have any good suggestions.

Cheers,

James

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi James and welcome here and to Goodreads in general!

Sounds like you've got a lot of first hand experience to share in a literary form. Congrats on airing Cross-Border and best of luck with it. Espionage is a fascinating theme. Many authors come to this site, hosting millions of readers, with high expectations. Takes time to ken the score.
Have a look at the sections and threads and feel free to contribute your views and opinion.
Hope you'll enjoy and participate.

At the moment, I am still mostly browsing, trying to get hold of how things work around here — but I will get there.

All the best

Graeme,

Thank you very much for the kind welcome and your kind words on my novel.

I have just set up a promotion topic for it (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) and am giving away some free copies. So in case I should have hooked you, let me know.

Belynda Thomas (belyndawilsonthomas) | 13 comments I am probably like a lot of other authors looking to enjoy the writing journey and get a little financial benefit out of it. It is a joy to get respect for having written a book. It is a joy to talk about the writer's journey. It is interesting to talk about choosing to self-publish and the benefits of taking our writing careers in our own hands.
I am loving being a writer at this stage in my life. Grown children, the heavy lifting of life is mostly behind me I have time and can afford to write. If I make money from it - bonus. If all I ever do is talk to my writer's group, go on a few internet talk show's, get into a local library, join arts groups, and continue to write - life is great. Between family, Toastmasters and writing this stage of my life is better than I could have hoped for. I get more out of writing as a journey than as a destination. To all those on this same journey - enjoy. When you finish one book start another and never stop writing.

Sounds like an excellent, realistic and stress free approach!

J.E. Park | 13 comments Hello Everyone! I'm glad to be here (I generally enjoy the company of anyone who lets me in without taking the added precaution of covering the furniture in plastic first).

A bit about myself: In 9th Grade a teacher told me that one day I would read a book that would change my life and she was right. I discovered Hunter S Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and learned how much fun misbehavior could be (I regret nothing). About the same time I read P.J. O'Rourke's "Holidays in Hell" and decided that my hedonist tendencies would benefit from a protracted road trip. So I joined the US Navy and spent several years bar brawling my way across the Far East with a Blood Alcohol Level that often exceeded my IQ (a few regrets there. That hurt.)

My misadventures in the Navy inspired my first three books Tequila Vikings (released Nov 2020), Olongapo Earp (May 2021), and Neptune's Martyrs (Aug 2021).

As I get the Tequila Vikings saga released, I am also outlining my next, a historical fiction series detailing the lives of the American and Filipino guerillas who resisted the Japanese on the island of Mindanao in World War II. So far it is shaping up to be a cross between Game of Thrones and Band of Brothers. I am really looking forward to throwing myself into that in earnest as my efforts in support of Tequila Vikings wind down.

I look forward to meeting and interacting with fellow writers and travelers as well as giving and getting advice upon what can help us progress through all of our journeys.

Cheers!
