Robert Gambogi | 1 comments I wish to become a member of this group.

I have been such things as; a Hollywood script consultant, “dialogue doctor,” creative writing teacher in Mexico and the U.S., as well as the winner of international short story awards. My Sherlock Holmes pastiche, Young Mr. Watson, was highly praised by Sherlockians worldwide.
But then writing became all too much and family life and golf called to take precedence over all. Now, at a too advanced age, I am shuffling my oeuvre (boy, that’s a disquieting image) off to Amazon self-publishing and am in the market for connection with an intelligent literary group.
I must say, I was quite impressed by your use of the word “trireme.” Haven’t seen that word since my last reading of Heart of Darkness.

message 1306: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Robert, welcome to the Group. I look forward to seeing you on the threads.

message 1307: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Robert & welcome!

I'm Sherlock's fan too. Hope "trireme" won't be the only word you like here :)

You are welcome to participate in discussions and enjoy your membership

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Gary & welcome!

Your flash specialization is well felt :)
Congrats on publishing and good luck with the ongoing project. Indeed, the world is kinda stormy lately.
Would like to hear your input on the running threads or on new ones, if you elect to open them.
Hope you’ll enjoy & contribute

Rachel McIntosh | 1 comments Hey, I'm Rachel! I'm new to Goodreads, so thanks for the invite!
I majored in Sociology and minored in Economics in university, and I still feel as though I've barely scratched the surface. Along with books, I'm wondering if anyone has any podcasts to recommend?

I'm very into fringe or social economics. Finance is interesting as well, but that's what I do for work so sometimes it's nice to have a break!

message 1312: by Nik (last edited Aug 11, 2020 10:23AM) (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Rachel & welcome here and to GR in general!

You might want to use both your major and minor in World and Economic section or have a break in the Lounge quarters in the bar. There are also reading and writing departments :)
Wherever you go, hope you'll enjoy and contribute

message 1313: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Gary, and Rachel. Welcome to the group. Looking forward to seeing you out on the threads.

John Eliot | 3 comments John Eliot. Poet, columnist, radio (from December). Collections: Ssh, Don't Go, Turn on the Dark, Conzoni del Venerdi (Italian/English selected poems) and a new collection in preparation, Another Breath.
Loves: reading and music. I rarely look at visual programmes unless they are rugby games. I worship my grand daughters. I live in the countryside. I rarely meet up with people, I'm too busy writing and reading.
I was invited to join this group. I'm not sure what I will be able to contribute or take from it. But every experience is worth reflecting on.
I will be 67 in a few days.
I am happily married.
I find eating tedious. Favourite food, daal.

message 1315: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi John, welcome & happy upcoming birthday!

Nice and informative intro. With your cross-media presence, I'm sure you've lots to say to the world or a small part of it that we here constitute.
Anyhow, hope you'll enjoy, maybe participate in discussions and find something to reflect upon.
BTW, how about drinking?

message 1316: by John (new)

John Eliot | 3 comments Tea!

message 1317: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Not as exciting, especially when it's 30+ Celsius outside, if you ask me, but maybe along the multiple alcohol drinking threads, we can have an own tea party running :)
Or maybe to reinforce the tea with a bit of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riga_Bl... ?

Jonathan Mark | 3 comments Hi. I am a writer who likes to read books which tell me something I dont already know and also entertain me . The Kite Runner is a good example.

message 1323: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Jonathan & welcome!

For some authors writing kills reading, but not in your case.
Allowing for our wide geographic and cultural spread, I hope you'd be able to find something new and entertaining in the discussions too, and hopefully - contribute from your own

message 1324: by Joséphine (new)

Joséphine Hi there, I'm Joséphine, 23, french, curious about many subjects but not really knowledgeable. Living like a hermit at the moment (unintentionnally), reading books is a nice pastime, and a way to feel more connected to the "real world".
Thanks for the invite Nik :)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Josephine & welcome!
I don’t know how to put this apostrophe above the ‘e’ :)
Hope soon you’ll live like you intend.
Anyhow, we’ll try to satisfy some of your curiosity and hopefully you’ll otherwise enjoy and contribute

I've worked as a welder, construction worker, attorney, CPA, bank trust officer, software developer, data science pro, and more.

I have been writing about political, economic, and legal issues on different platforms for a while now.

I recently self-published my first novel. It's about the end of America's democracy. An American President becomes a dictator for life. He's a terrible leader and consequently, America suffers many hardships. Can anyone guess the name of the dictator?

message 1328: by Graeme (new)

Pete Draper | 1 comments Hi all

I write grimdark fantasy set in a gaslamp world, I've been writing for a while now but finally got around to self-publishing my first book this year and have published another one since. I did a lot of writing while I was working from home during lockdown but I doubt I'll get as much time to write when I have to go back to work

message 1335: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Pete & welcome!

Congrats and good luck with the books. Sounds like you find "work- from -home" somewhat advantageous :)

Hope you'll have a smooth return to work, and enjoy and contribute being here.

Margaret Walker | 19 comments His Most Italian CityMargaret Walker
Hi, my name is Margaret. I am an author of historical fiction. My first novel 'His Most Italian City' was published by Penmore Press, US last year. Its theme is the ethnic cleansing of Slovenians in Trieste under the dictatorship of Mussolini. Penmore will publish my second novel 'Through Forests and Mountains' next year about Hitler's invasion of Yugoslavia, a girl who wants to be a Partisan and the man who falls in love with her. Its sequel is called 'Shadower' about the Partisan Navy in Split, 1943. Hopefully they'll publish that, too.

Interesting themes and well done on the series. Any personal connection to the topic of your books or Yugoslavia in general?
In addition to obvious writing section, you might want to weigh in maybe on historical and contemporary threads running.
Hope you’ll enjoy and contribute

Hi Nik! Yes, my biological mother was Yugoslavian from Istria. I wrote the first book to record her family history. My adoptive mother told me about the women in the Yugoslav Partisans in the 1960's or 70's, and I've been interested every since.

My name is Ann Crystal and I am a self-published writer, poet, and crafter who lives in the City of Angels (Los Angeles, California).

Many of my works are centered on the genres of fantasy and supernatural, and you will find elements of environmental awareness and sometimes religious highlights from my Catholic upbringing.

Thank you,

Iain Charles | 14 comments Hello everyone,
I have not 'sailed the seven seas' as is mentioned in the Group header blurb, but I have flown over all of them many times. From 35,000 feet they all look the same, but once you land things get interesting.

I have never not written. And I have always travelled. Result? My debut novel, a thriller called 'Taken Flight' came out late last year. Thanks to a recent Bookbub feature the book cracked the top ten Crime/Thriller charts in the UK, Australia and Canada. So now I pretend to my friends that I am a real author.

Looking forward to some lively discussion.

(PS: book is available in all Amazon stores)

Taken Flight: A hundred people vanish. For one, it's personal.

Yes, I could guess that name....but that would be a banned political topic!

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Iain and welcome!

On one of the threads here we are discussing prospective supersonic flights at 60K feet (which I hope will stay on the radar at all times), if you want to weigh in maybe :)

Very well done with hitting the bull's eye already with the debut and hope more will follow.
And my third hope is that you'll enjoy and contribute on various topics
