Bill Greer | 1 comments I am a Brooklyn-based author who has spent decades exploring New York. My new book A Dirty Year: Sex, Suffrage, and Scandal, from Chicago Review Press, is a nonfiction narrative of 1872 New York, a city teeming with social upheaval and experiencing all the excitement and challenges a moment of transformation brings. My novel The Mevrouw Who Saved Manhattan paints a portrait of the city’s founding as New Amsterdam.

Ann Brown and thanks for the invite. I'm Ann and I love to read. I'll read practically anything. I love romance, crime, thriller, humour books but will try anything that takes my fancy! The group looks interesting. I also like to keep abreast of what's going on in the world.

Gabriel Pinsdorf | 1 comments Hello everyone :)

My name is Gabriel, I enjoy Finance (cryptocurrency as a considerable part of it), watching and trying to understand the complex changes the world is going through.

I am Brazilian and work for a US company that provides US stock trading to the entire world.

The reason I am joining this group is one more attempt in trying to find reliable sources of knowledge/news, I've been drifting away from books and leaning towards Newsletters, Opinion Blogs, etc where I can get more direct and precise information.

My problem with books is there is too much noise, 200 pages that could be shortened in a good 10-20 pages summary (if not less) that will provide me the same if not more information about the subject.

Excited to go through this forum and see if my mind can be changed back to liking books and find great treasures here.

message 1264: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Oi Gabriel & welcome!

We are a little cautious with mind-changing here :), but otherwise - there are lively discussions at times on various topics - some of them of biz/economic nature.
Admittedly, there is an increasing problem with reliability of sources for almost anything and for various reasons - from factual news to supposedly scientific data, so I can understand why someone would prefer a digest over a full tome. On the other hand, we are mostly sharing experiences and offer opinions on any subject from philosophic to contemporary, so it's only occasionally would be an authoritative opinion of a pro :)
Anyhow, hope you'll enjoy and elect to contribute from your own knowledge and wisdom

Hi Katelynn. That is pretty much the story for most of us. Sharing your work with the world can be both rewarding and bruising. But you seem to have the calling for better or worse.
An easy entree to your ambition is a Wattpad account. If you've got one and you are posting - great
If not, the account is free and there is a very large audience. I don't know what kind of success you might have but I am sure you would find people who enjoyed your offerings.
Good luck

message 1266: by Beverley (new)

Beverley | 2 comments I am me! I live in a bubble outside of life most of the time due to chronic pain and fatigue and mental health problems. People who think they know me probably don't. I open up to very few people as most people want the English answer 'I'm fine' which most of the time isn't true for me, so I tend to reply 'nothing new' as it solves the problem. I am a retired nurse. A breast cancer survivor (nearly 3 years), a mum, and a grandma. I love books, I can never read one at a time. I teach a youth group at Church. I do a lot of family history research either with one of sister on our own tree or help others with theirs, I taught it daily for two years.
I am not my disabilities or ailments, but sometimes I think they are me.

message 1267: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Beverly. Welcome to the group. I look forward to seeing you on the threads.

message 1268: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Beverley & welcome!

Glad that it's you and not an impostor :) Well done on defeating the cancer and on devoting yourself to research, teaching and reading despite the problems and pain.
Hope you are coping somehow and will be able to enjoy & participate

louise m. (dopeypinocchio) | 2 comments Hi all!
I'm from Sweden, a youngish woman who have yet to find her place in the professional sense. I wish to be employed in a publishing company, become an editor, and is therfor the reason why I joined this group, in the hope of it being the right one. I would like your tips on HOW to get a foot in somewhere with a traditional education of studies in literature.
Especially if you are a swede and has been in the same situation I'd love your advice!

Thank you and swim safely!

message 1271: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Louise & welcome!

Hope your career aspirations will develop as you desire and you'll find yourself professionally soonest. Maybe a member - Krazykiwi, stationed in Sweden as far as I know, can offer some suggestions locally anchored, if you look her up and manage to contact.

Hope you'll make the best of your membership here and otherwise enjoy and contribute

Sharlene Almond | 4 comments Hi,

I'm Sharlene, currently studying Medicinal Cannabis and PTSD. Currently editing my second Annabella Cordova novel, a historical/present day psychological thriller.
And I'm a bit addicted to studying:)
I got an invite from Nik, so looking forward to chatting with more people from this group. :)

message 1273: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Sharlene & welcome!

When between cannabis and studying, you mention the latter being addictive, I start to worry a bit :)
Good luck with the new novel and hope the editing part is still a little exciting.

Looking forward to your participation. Hope you’ll enjoy & contribute

message 1274: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Sharlene and Louise. Welcome to the group.

Louise, I spent 9 weeks in Karlstad during the summer of '99. I have many fond memories of Sweden.

I hope you both find value in the group.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Jim and welcome,

An impressive career, achievements and experiences!
Not sure, the format is the best for playing musical instruments, but suitable for discussions and exchange of opinions. We don't set a high bar for what's valuable: I hope hearing and learning from geographically and otherwise different worldviews enriches us all.

You are most welcome to share your insight, enjoy and contribute to the discussions.

message 1280: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Sadie & welcome!

Majoring, you are certainly on the right path to realize your CPA’s aspiration. With corona wiping out biz, hope enough will survive to retain and otherwise offer sound opportunities to accountants and lawyers, like myself :)

Hope you’ll enjoy & contribute

Looking forward to talk to you guys and contribute to the discussions whenever I can.

Raymond Cushing | 225 comments Thanks for the invitation, Nik. Interesting group.

I am a writer living in Canada. Looking forward to reading some of the discussions. I'll contribute if I feel I have anything worthwhile to add.

Over the years, I worked as a logger, an accountant, a manager of various departments in various industries, a distributor of medical devices with my own small company, and as a stock market Technical Analyst and trader. Now, I'm an Action/Thriller writer.

Along the way, I collected a degree in Economics from the University of Waterloo here in Canada.

And also as John Prine sang, "It's a big old goofy world."

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Raymond & welcome!

You’ve certainly got a diverse experience and education and can probably bring a lot to the table :) With active voices from the States, UK, Australia and NZ, we’ve been lacking a Canadian input for quite some time. Seen recently surprising headlines about Trudeau’s suspected corruption, but haven’t dived into details yet.
Good luck with author’s career.

Hope you’ll enjoy and contribute

David Steinman | 3 comments Hi everybody, I'm the author of a new novel about Ethiopia's democracy revolution, Money, Blood and Conscience. About me: Wharton-trained economist turned international revolutionary, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for my role in the Ethiopian rebellion. See my July 3 interview in New Europe, "The Risk of Another Betrayal Cannot be Tolerated," in which I expose the involvement of World Health Organization leader Tedros Adhanom to Ethiopian atrocities and shed light on his relationship with China during the Covid outbreak.

message 1288: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi David & welcome!

Read your profile page and sounds like you live in a thriller, so unsurprisingly you decided to put some of it on paper :)
I see you weren't very active on Goodreads, but I hope you'll choose to participate in discussions, share some of your experience and enjoy, of course...

Charissa Wilkinson (lilmizflashythang) | 422 comments Hi David. Do you believe in supply and demand economics, or Keynesian?

message 1290: by David (new)

David Steinman | 3 comments Hi everyone, my name is David Steinman, the author of Money, Blood and Conscience, an "infotainment" novel about Ethiopia's democracy revolution. I was senior adviser to that revolution for 27 years. I also exposed the Ethiopian "TPLF" (Tigray People's Liberation Front) dictatorship's atrocities and theft of billions from famine victims in the Washington Post, Forbes and New York Times. I have a degree in economics from Wharton and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for my Ethiopian work and contributions to peacebuilding in the Horn of Africa.
