You've made an impressive return-:)

Dave (DaveMWrites) | 1 comments Not sure how I got here, but the discussion topics look interesting, and I look forward to reading what everyone has to say. But anyway, my name is Dave, and I'm always happy to discuss politics, economics, or other current events. Also working on my first novel, a political thriller set a century from now, which passes through a few other genres as well.

We have plenty of politics, economics and current events going here, so please feel free to offer your input anywhere. Your project sounds interesting too. Best of luck with it!

Hope you'll enjoy & contribute

Allie Barnard (clevelandbookgirl) Hello all,

My name is Allison Barnard. I would love to write my own book someday. Needless to say I am also a bookworm.

I recently started working for a publishing company, so if you have any questions on publishing please do not hesitate to ask. I would love to help you through the process, whether traditional or self-publishing.

message 1110: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Nik, if anyone posts a problematic link, I'd ban them.

P.G. Sundling (pgsundling) | 20 comments My award-winning debut novel, The Internet President: None of the Above goes a lot into technology, politics, and economics. It's an odd mix of a dozen genres. It also parallels a lot of events that were going on in 2016. I even have a "Fact Versus Fiction" section after the end. I just retired to write full time.

My next book is Hot Nights and Cold Wars. A conspiracy by Russian oligarchs and cyber warfare will be big components of the book.

I was invited by Nik and from the description on Goodreads, it sounds like we'll have similar books. I'd totally be down with trading author blurbs.

Yeah, had to delete over a dozen of spam messages lately and ban the spammer. Re: cryptocurrency thought maybe he could benefit from the doubt, but didn't risk to explore the link :)

Hi P.G. & welcome!

Congrats on retirement and commencement of full time writing. When looking at your profile, thought indeed that we might have common themes to worry about. Glad that I'm not the only one who couldn't remain indifferent in the face of Russian oligarchs -:)

Hope you'll enjoy, contribute and derive benefit from participation

The Internet President: None of the Above even has subplots about not just Russian oligarchies, but consolidating wealth in the U.S. and has an action scene that lists times banks rigged markets. Message me if you want to read a copy. I'd definitely be up for reading one of your oligarch books in exchange.

I noticed wealth listed as a group component. Perhaps I should share details on my approach to retirement.

I look forward to seeing you on our threads.

P.G. Sundling (pgsundling) | 20 comments I've decided instead of writing up a full thing, I'm just going to say that a 1031 into a Delaware Statutory Trust is a wonderful thing if you have rental properties. I own stakes in Passco and RK properties offerings.

The expenses are high to get in (about 8.5% of principal), of which I was able to negotiate a 4% commission instead of 6% from the financial broker. However, it gives 4-6% dependable income with risks that aren't correlated with the markets. These investments usually go 7-10 years before needing to be rolled over. Because of the leverage, the depreciation expenses makes the cash flow close to tax free.

It's illiquid, but the point is to roll it over until you die and live off the income. Overall I've been getting 5.5% or so from my investment so far, with appreciation, total returns are probably higher.

An excellent yield in current times!

message 1119: by George (new)

George Fairbrother Thanks for the opportunity to join and contribute. For fun, my interests are 20th century America, including early Hollywood and the music industry. Also presidential politics up to and including Ronald Reagan. I also dabble in some historical fiction; Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden are my authors of choice at the moment.

Professionally speaking, my interests are largely related to 19th and 20th century Britain. I'm currently contracted with a UK publisher for a series of political-historical fiction novels set primarily in 1980s of Margaret Thatcher. The first one was out recently.

Thanks again, and it's nice to be part of the group.

message 1120: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi George & welcome!

Would be interesting to hear your input on historical & contemporary events. Different times different leaders, if to compare Margo with Theresa, for example. Can only speculate how Margo would've handled Brexit and other issues at hand.
Good luck with the series!
Hope you'll enjoy & contribute indeed

message 1121: by David (new)

David Flin | 18 comments Hello. I'm David Flin, and have picked up writing now that I'm (technically) retired. I mainly write historical fiction, with occasional wanderings into British myth.

Oh yes, I'm from London. Born in the East End of London. Left when I was 16; did stuff around the world for 50 years. Now live in London. They say you can take the boy out of the city, but in my case, turns out they say wrong.

I still find it odd when my children tell me they're doing a history project at school, and it turns out I lived through it. I guess that's why I write historical fiction ...

message 1122: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hello David and welcome to Goodreads and this group in particular!
West Ham or indifferent to football? -:)
Hope you have an excellent (technical) retirement and best of luck with your writing.
I might know your feeling of living through history, when around the globe they are talking about Chernobyl series, while for me it's just a part of my adolescence that I lived through..
Hope you'll enjoy & contribute

message 1123: by David (new)

David Flin | 18 comments West Ham. It's the unpredictability. The one constant in life is that you never know what you'll get; true during the Moore/Hurst/Peters/Byrne era, then Bonds and Brooking, and now.

message 1124: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments As English league is most competitive & unpredictable in Europe, hope for you that the Hammers will have another peak of glory sometime soon.
From a more personal angle as a Dynamo fan, hope Yarmolenko will leave a more significant impact than Rebrov at the time, although not sure Premier league is the best venue for his play. What's fans' perception of his game and potential?

message 1125: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi George and David, welcome to the group. I look forward to seeing you on the threads.

Chris Porter | 2 comments Hi all, I'm Chris, and I've been reading most of my life, and recently ventured into the murky realm of writing, self-publishing a book at Amazon-Kindle! I started my professional life in Army Counterintelligence (please don't ask me what I did; you know I can't tell you), and have subsequently done a great deal of security, pizza delivery, and the like, because it turns out nobody knows what to do with that kind of experience! I also have a fair background in science, and have practiced martial arts for 36 years now. I joined this group because I like the broad range of topics you discuss, and the international make-up of the group!

message 1127: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Chris & welcome!

Sounds like you've got an interesting and diverse career and set of skills. Yeah, I guess an adaptation from military to civil career is not always smooth.
Here I read that some intelligence unit's graduates proceed to become high tech entrepreneurs: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forb... , but that's probably more about those dealing with cyber.
Congrats and best of luck with the book.
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Chris, welcome aboard.

message 1129: by Colin (new)

Colin Lloyd | 1 comments Thanks for the invitation to join the group Nik,

My name is Colin but people call me Col. I'm new to Goodreads and am still learning the ropes. I'm in the process of self-publishing my first novel - a Financial Thriller (my wife tells me that's an oxymoron). My other writing is about macroeconomics and I been working in finance and commodity markets since the early '80's.

My fiction tastes include, Thrillers, Crime and historical fiction.

This seems like a very eclectic group, so I'll probably be a little coy at first.

Thanks again for the invite.

Welcome!
Best of luck with airing a novel and other writing!
We offer a wide range of themes indeed and pls feel free to contribute to any discussion.
Hope you'll enjoy

Manda "The BookBud" (thebookbud) Hi! I'm Amanda, 25 and just trying to figure out more about me and my world. I love meeting new people and trying new things from food to experiences. I am very opinionated but also like to be debated so I don't mind disagreement; sometimes, I encourage it. I read as much as possible but I really wanted to become more involved in the reading community all together so I'm hoping by jumping into a few groups, I can meet new people and explore new books to share.

Renn Kuhr | 1 comments Hello everyone,

I'm new to Goodreads but enjoying it greatly so far.
I've been writing for as long as I can remember but I am also an avid reader. I enjoy humor, satire, the absurd and a couple teaspoons of Fantasy added in for good measure. Currently, I'm working on short stories and have published a couple of them. Music is also another passion so I try to create a rapport between my writings and my playlists.
I can be found here on Goodreads or at https://rennkuhr.com

message 1144: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Renn & welcome!

We wouldn't mind some humor & absurdity splashed onto the threads, if not all of it was consumed by the stories you write:) Best of luck with your writing.
We also have a few music fans and threads around.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

message 1147: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi BRP, what books have you already published?

When do you think you'll get a website?

message 1148: by Aisha (new)

Aisha | 1 comments I have spent the last 4 years of my life living the dream through high school. I am on the dance team at my school but until recently it was rare that I had time to pick up a book. I used to read on average a book a day when I was in middle school. Now, it's more like two books a week. I am very open and patient. Dystopian novels are my favorite to read along with science fiction. My reason for joining is to simply get more involved with this community. Thanks for inviting me :)

message 1149: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Kierra & welcome!

Two books a week is still an excellent pace. Hope living the dream is not ironic in your case :)
We appreciate involvement, so looking forward to your contribution to the discussions at hand.

Gjøa | 2 comments Hi,

I’m new to goodreads, but not new to books. :) I love reading most non fiction books I can get my hands on. I’ve always had a healthy interest in economics and current events and was delighted to find this bookclub. My gateway book was The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron and I’ve never looked back since. I’m really looking forward to new book recommendations.
