Welcome, Scout! Or, perhaps, I'll learn from you. There's usually something for me to learn from someone else.

Admire your proactive approach.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

message 812: by Scott (new)

Scott | 42 comments New member here, I'm an aspiring author like so many others. Not much to my credit yet, just three short story collections and a couple of novellas. They're mostly in the horror/thriller genre, I'd say. Oh, and I have a Disney guidebook that's currently being published by Theme Park Press -- waiting on a release date. I have more in the pipeline.

I'm also a dentist, and where I'm not so successful as an author, I've done well in my slightly-over-30 years in private practice. I've also been involved in setting up (and volunteering at) our local free dental clinic, and I briefly worked for our local health department many years ago. I'm happy to give feedback to anyone who might be writing about something in that field; feel free to ask...

I noticed some posts on my friend Steve Moore's feed, and thought that the discussion sounded very interesting, so here I am...

message 813: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Scott and welcome!

I think you downplay a little your literary achievements and they aren't that small at all.

Dentists like publishers and readers here are always in high demand -:) Respect for your volunteering activity!

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

Marie Silk | 1025 comments Hi, Scott! I've been curious about how the short story and novella markets work, so glad to welcome you here :)

message 815: by Scott (new)

Scott | 42 comments Marie wrote: "Hi, Scott! I've been curious about how the short story and novella markets work, so glad to welcome you here :)"

The short story market, for me, has been a bust. It's even hard to give them away on the Select promotions. Novellas are a little better in the horror market. Readers seem to be okay with reading something over 25K words. I'm mostly judging by what I see being published and their ranks and reviews. (I haven't sold much...)

@Nik, thanks for the welcome! I'll keep trying by continuing to write and publish. Look forward to reading here!

Have been retired now for 12 years. Formerly an executive in the Data Communications industry. Am now interested in learning as much as I can about the people and events of the Revolutionary War era and thereafter (1770 to 1815). May have a book in me also.

message 819: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi George and welcome!

Hope you enjoy your retirement. Not sure we focus specifically on the mentioned period, but we have quite a few members interested and knowledgeable in history, so I hope the exchange of thoughts and views can be fruitful for you.

Feeling 'pregnant' with a book, is the first sign of contracting the writer's virus -:) Not the worst disease though and may evolve into a book delivery. Good luck with extracting it!

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

History is a very relevant topic for self-actualization.

Alistair Potter | 8 comments Hi,

I'm Alistair from Scotland - that's the more northern and non-Brexity part of the UK ( 'United Kingdoms' of; Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England). Often confused with just 'England', ...but nobody's perfect.

I'm not a big fan of chasing money for the sake of it, but I've no problem with getting good at 'doing things'. Currently that's writing SF and Fantasy novels. Next stage is to get better at selling them!

My 'product range' is available on Amazon as EBooks, though I am thinking of taking the plunge into hard copy - yet another learning project!

Here's the books...

The Box of Tricks by Alistair Potter The Box of Tricks
The Last Trollid (The Sunset of Magic #1) by Alistair Potter The Last Trollid
The Counsel of Wizards (The Sunset of Magic #2) by Alistair Potter The Counsel of Wizards
Bort's People (The Sunset of Magic # 3) by Alistair Potter Bort's People
Beach Life 2 by Alistair Potter Beach Life 2

Perax Frontier by Alistair Potter ....and my newest work; Perax Frontier is in the final pre-release stages. I've a first chapter preview on Goodreads, and if it takes your fancy, and you'd like to consider reviewing it, get in touch and I can send-on a .mobi or PDF copy.

Cheers.
