Welcome, Bill!

Welcome, formally, Jeff/TheLongWait.

I too have a few WIPs. My goal this year is to self-publish one of them, a horror story. My target is 50k; i'm at 3k. <;) perhaps this year both of you will join my publishing experiment as well?

message 702: by William (new)

William Webb | 10 comments Hi Alex,

Do the horror story! You know you can.

I have six books on this year's calendar. If I actually finish and publish them all I'll collapse from exhaustion!

But I'm a lot older than you guys, so I don't have as much time to get my books out there. That's why I'm in such a hurry.

message 703: by S.Q. (new)

S.Q. Orpin (sqorpin) | 4 comments Good luck to you guys! I'm sure you can reach your goals, I wrote three full-length novels last year, each about a hundred and twenty thousand words. The key for me was that I was so excited about what I was writing that it became a six-part series, which I will finish the next three this year. Although I work full time, writing is my passion so it was easy to do.

I'm very impressed! I wish I could produce at that rate!

Groovy Lee Hi, Everybody!

My name is Groovy. I'm so glad to be a member of this forum. Like William, I, too, am a very old teenager:) Everything else has changed, but I still like to rebel and cause mayhem. My daughter is my Queen and best friend, I'm a tennis fan, and addicted to bottled tea.

It's so good to see what writing means to everyone here. It's my passion, also. I have a new release coming out in a few weeks, and I'm sooooo excited.

I can't wait to interact with everyone and learn.

Hi, to everybody I already know here:)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Groovy and welcome!

Feel free to cause mayhem and rebel-:) And if you add a bit of alcohol into your tea, it'll be super compatible with our weekend drinking.
Tennis also goes, although with Sharapova derailed, I'm a little less attentive-;)

Best of luck with the upcoming release!

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

S.Q. Orpin (sqorpin) | 4 comments Hopefully, I'm posting this in the right thread. I had mentioned that I was doing an online book blitz to advertise the first book in my series and I wanted to let everyone know how it went. So far, for me, the greatest challenges have been marketing and getting reviews. The book blitz cost $90 from Xpresso book tours. They were very efficient and prompt and much more savvy than I am with putting together blurbs, etc. By the first day, I was mentioned over 50 times on Instagram and Twitter, and in numerous blogs. Within the 5 day blitz period, I had over 100 mentions which led to almost 100 free downloads of my e-book on Amazon. Even now, I'm getting mentions and have had 12 new likes on my Facebook page. I feel the blitz was worth it for getting my name out there and I will continue with the next 2 books in my series. I'm hoping it will also lead to reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, but I haven't seen that yet. What other marketing strategies is everyone doing? What has been successful?

message 708: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Thank-you, Nik. Here's to some weekend drinking!!
I'm disappointed about Sharapova, too. But don't give up completely, there are so many new talents coming up you'll probably like:)

S.Q., did you get any sales during your book blitz?

message 709: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi S.Q. and thanks for sharing your experience!
Maybe not ideally placed, but we'll try to show you some hidden resources -:) Here for example:

100 downloads is probably not a gigantic number, but having your book mentioned and circulating in the cyberspace is absolutely necessary. Hope you'll find some useful and cost effective strategies here and shares yours-:)

William Webb | 10 comments By far the best marketing money I've spent is have postcards printed up with my book cover on one side, and the details on the reverse. I've handed out hundreds to date and I'm guessing at least 50% lead to a sale.

Hello to all and happy New Year!
Although I have been an author-member of "Goodreads" and some of its forums since my first novel had been published in 2012, I was surprised to discover your community offering a larger view on modern day events. Most of the forum discussions I tried offer a narrow and mostly one-sided view.
I was lucky and privileged to attain degrees in different fields of education, having received an engineering and a business degree from well-known schools. This combination of expertise had opened for me doors of international corporations and Wall street investing.
My novels are based on my own experiences and interaction with real people who have been shaping the current world we live in America today. The American Deluge A Sometimes Strange Story
One of my novels opens with this,
"There are no coincidences! There are no twists of fate! And there are no things that just happen."
Looking forward to joining this group. Sincerely, Uri Norwich

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Uri and welcome!

Glad you find our small community a little different -:)
Although any higher education is not a prerequisite, I guess a couple + experience with corporations and Wall should come handy.

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute from your knowledge and POV

Thanks for the intro, Marissa, and it's always a pleasure to greet someone formally!
Regular education, homeschooling, autodidacts - the means how one arrives to the knowledge are less important if it's achieved in the end -:)
Anarchy has some appeal, but not sure it's desirable at current stage of humankind's evolution (imo), lest we return to the domination of the strongest, but that can be a good theme for debate.

Amit Siovitz | 11 comments Hi there,
The name's Amit, I just published my first novel a few months ago and I'm trying to find ways of promoting it, and Goodreads certainly looks like a good way to go.
I'm an avid reader of (almost) all genres. I studied literature in Freiburg, Germany, and am now trying to find my place in the world, since living off writing seems like an impossible thing these days.

message 725: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Hi Amit and welcome!

Congrats on the published novel. Just today Aiden brought us some fresh data about authors selling 350 million copies of their books, so I guess Grisham or King would probably argue whether that was enough to live off writing -:) However, maybe 99% of others might agree with your conclusion.

Anyhow, I hope you succeed in promoting your book and finding your place in the world (wasn't Merkel's popularity declining a bit and elections being soon? -:))

Hope you'll enjoy and contribute

Welcome Amit!

That article focuses on writers who have risen through the ranks of traditional publishing. There is another way: the self-publishing entrepreneur.

To start You could post your new book in our Announcements folder and check out our Author Resources spreadsheet in All Things Writing & Publishing folder to help make marketing your book a success.

I'd recommend reading Publishing 101 (which I own) to get the lay of the land. Then I'd go to authorearnings.com to see the reports and stats compiled from 1 million Amazon titles to figure out how your book fits into your genre of choice and to size up the competition. For more market intelligence I'd analyze the top 100 books in your book's genre. Then you'd have a solid base for developing your marketing plan and where to go with your next book.

Not sure, how wide-spread it is for them to have viable programs to offer, but any effort is certainly welcome!

Groovy Lee Alex and Amit, I know if you started a Manga/Anime forum, my daughter would be first in line to join:)

I asked her why she likes it so much, and she LOOVVVEESSS the artistic merit they give to the characters, the music, and storylines that's different from the cartoons in America. (but don't call them cartoons to her face--man!)

Oh, welcome to all the new members:) And thank-you, Uri, for liking my name:)

Audrey Harrison | 2 comments Hello! I'm an Indie author who usually hides behind my machine, preferring life in the early 1800's to modern times. I started to write in secret - only my immediate family knew and then when somebody close to me died, I suddenly thought, why not put my work out? It's been a slow process but I'm more than happy with what I've achieved, while still getting to grips with technology - I sound like a dinosaur and I'm really not - ok maybe a little dinosaur.... Anyway, I write Historical Romance, mainly Regency while living in the cold Lancashire town of Wigan and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone!
