Months have passed since Gregor arrived in the Underland. He thought he would never have to go back there again. But when his sister Boots goes missing, he had to go back. In the Underland, after he discovers that he has a killer instinct, he learned about the Prophecy of Bane. A white, furry, 30 ft tall monster of a rat will be released very soon, and he has to kill it. Traveling through an underground sea, he find something shocking.
With him on his quest is a banished gnawer (or a huge, 6ft tall rat) called Twitchtip. She has a sense of smell so incredible, that she can somehow sniff out colors. Her purpose was to be a navigator to find the Bane, who is in a complex of caverns called the labyrinth. But she isn’t familiar with the area, as they are in the middle of a sea where it’s blindingly dark on a boat. In one case, Twitchtip notices a disturbance in the waters, but can not find the word for it. Later, it turns out to be a giant whirlpool that nearly drowned her. At another point, she smells a new island forming with lava pouring about. The island was covered in tiny, flying insects that were unfamiliar to her. The flyers (or 30ft wingspan bats) thought they were mites and the flyers needed food. One flew there and learned that the mites were flesh eating the hard way. Later on, giant sea serpents attacked her. Twitchtip then lost her sense of smell and could not track the Bane. In fact, I think that Twitchtip didn’t really helped, and the story would’ve stayed the same if she wasn’t there. It’s a shame too for a unique talent like that go to waste.
The idea of being underground really fools you mind. As you read, you picture the scenario like having light and you can see. It’s supposed to be pitch black though and it constantly reminds you that your are in a dark cave with no other sources of light besides a flashlight or a shiner (or giant whining annoying fireflies). It kinda ruins how you imagined a scenario as you keep forgetting that it’s supposed to be dark.
Overall, The Prophecy of Bane is a very good sequel. It’s plot is very different from the first, though it’s similar how people believe a cryptic prophecy and send a boy into danger. Now, they expect him to kill a colossal rat. Unlike the first though, Gregor actually has a WEAPON to use! He even has a ‘rager’ power in him.
