SOLVED. Boy escapes from prison camp to find family. Funny tasting milk. [s]

I read this in the 1980s. It was about a boy who escapes from some sort of prison (I don't think it was a concentration camp - not as bad as that - but something a little like that) to try and find his family. It was set somewhere in Europe, I think.

About all I can remember of it is that at some point he seems to wind up being cared for by a nice family who give him milk to drink which he likes. They also give him vitamin pills. One day he bites a vitamin pill just before he drinks the milk and realises the milk now tastes the same as milk he was given in the camp or prison and he decides that means the milk there must have had vitamins added.

Thank you, Leslie. I think you might be right. I'll need to get a copy to check, but I now have a memory of the end of the book where I think he find his mother and says "I am David".
