Caecilia Saori .. ❣ ..
We all have book genres we like more, and some we like less.
But is there any book genre, which you would - never, consider reading?

* * *

For me - cheesy romance doesn't work. Exc for that, I have to say that I have found mind-opening, great works in every genre.

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments There are not any genres that I never read but I don't get on very well with science fiction or chick-lit.

message 3: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments There are not any genres that I wouldn't consider reading but I don't read much horror.

message 4: by Tasha (new)

Tasha For me, it's YA. I read very little of that genre and only if a book comes really highly recommended. I don't hate it though, it's just one I don't tend to enjoy much.

message 5: by Peggy (last edited Feb 11, 2016 05:12AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Horror. I don't think it's worth having sleepless nights over a book.

There are other genres I don't read much, or at all, (science fiction or those harlequin type books for example), but I could imagine reading one if the description sounds not too bad and it is for a group read or challenge or something. But not horror.

Caecilia Saori -- ✫ --
amazing to read all your replies :D

Some of my bookish friends also, do not like YA books.

message 7: by Teanka (new)

Teanka It's romance, just as for you, Caecilia. Chick-lit as well.

message 8: by Tasha (new)

Tasha romance!! I totally forgot about this one and yes, this is one I really do hate reading. haha...totally slipped my mind probably bc I really don't ever read it.

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I avoid chick lit and romance. Less inclined to pick up ya but I will occasionally.

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Christian fiction and poetry are low priority for me.

message 11: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Chick-Lit and Romance are on my no-go list as well. I've never even tried reading Christian fiction, it sounds pretty limited when you have to qualify it.

message 12: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I rarely do romance. Straight up romance is generally not for me.

I don't read poetry or political stuff. My husband loves political books and they bore me to tears. Also, anything that is really religion-based. I don't like to feel like someone's beliefs are being pushed on me.

message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I will read a bit of romance especially if I need something that is light, easy, and I don't have to think too hard. Those times are when I'm overwhelmed and stressed.

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I'm particular about my romance. Some books I will read and enjoy, but others I wouldn't entertain reading. I don't avoid it all together.

message 15: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I don't read Christian fiction, Paranormal or Erotica. Romance and Chick-Lit are very low priority. Horror and Sci-Fi usually aren't at the top of the list, but I like both.

message 16: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Kristie wrote: "I'm particular about my romance. Some books I will read and enjoy, but others I wouldn't entertain reading. I don't avoid it all together."

I don't really enjoy when all the story is about a romance. I like some romance in books, as one of the ingredients. Not totally necessary, though.
Sometimes are a good, quick option for challenges or topplers.

message 17: by Almeta (last edited Feb 11, 2016 08:03AM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Don't pick up Westerns as a rule.

Really dis-like the bodice ripper romances. If forced to read one (which has happened), my reviews include mention of my gag reflex and barf bags.

I do like sexy within another genre. (Like Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson series

Generational family sagas bore me to tears.

Almost all sub-genres of Mysteries and Gothic Horror attract me the most.

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I'm not a big fan of chick-lit either. Some romance is okay, I prefer paranormal romance to contempory romance.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, I find it hard to get my head around some of them.

And horror is another I don't like to read too much, I don't want any extra nightmares.

message 19: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Romance is a genre that is pretty much a no go for me.

I read them avidly in my mdiddle school years around age 14-15 and got them out of my system i guess.

Avoidance reflex also kicks in with paranormal. No zombies, shapeshifters, werewolves, etc for me. Except classics!

The heart wants what it wants : )

message 20: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Note, the American poet Emily Dickinson said it first, that "the heart wants what it wants" (in a letter to a friend back when people use to often correspond at length by letters).

message 21: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Tejas Janet wrote: "The heart wants what it wants : )"

I agree (with you and Dickinson, :) ). And I agree with Peggy too regarding that when a buddy read or similar is involved, I'm more willing to try something I wouldn't have to by myself.

message 22: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2098 comments I don't read erotica, poems, plays, religious fiction or westerns, unless I'm absolutely forced to due to a challenge (I've suffered through two Shakespeare plays due to challenges, umph...), But I love speculative fiction (with the odd exception of not especially liking steampunk) and horror.

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I can't believe I missed off Classics. I don't do classics! :-)

message 24: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice wrote: "Christian fiction and poetry are low priority for me."

I should add those to my list too. And erotica.

message 25: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Sarah wrote: "I can't believe I missed off Classics. I don't do classics! :-)"

I need to make that a rule formyself.

I read classics because "I SHOULD have read them already". I am very rarely pleased when I do!☻

message 26: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Sarah & Almeta - I almost added classics to my list. I don't often read them. Every so often I try because I feel like I should like them, but I generally don't. I keep trying though. I completely understand Almeta's feeling like I should have read them already.

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I don't read much classics. I don't like to have to work too hard to enjoy a book and it's the old language that makes me struggle. I keep trying though.

I will read a bit of erotica from time to time. The problem there is that the writing is often rubbish.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Romance, chic lit and cozy mysteries. I have never ventured into erotica. I have always figured if the others didn't tickle my fancy, erotica wouldn't. ;)

message 29: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I would add Westerns to my no-go list along with War Stories. I hate War Stories.

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I don't think I've ever read a western... at least not in recent memory. I don't like war stories meaning battles and fighting scenes, but I do enjoy stories set during war time.

message 31: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I guess by War Stories, I mean Military Drama that is about actual war. I prefer my war tempered or perspected by humanity.

Definitely! Glad Peggy mentioned that. I've read a great many books I never would have before participating on Goodreads, especially from this group : )

Me too!

I don't read Mysteries (anymore; I did read it a lot in my teen years)
I read very seldom Biographies; Steampunk, I couldn't bring myself to try till today
And I dont like Christian Fiction

message 34: by Caecilia (new)

Caecilia Saori ☺ interesting.
i like to read a classic novel now and then.

but mostly, i read contemporary fiction.
there's so much choice at the moment.

message 35: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments So, I'm having to laugh at myself a bit. I said I never read Westerns. Well...I'm totally reading one right now!

Kristie | 19137 comments Lynda wrote: "So, I'm having to laugh at myself a bit. I said I never read Westerns. Well...I'm totally reading one right now!"

lol, isn't that always the way! I try not to say I never or would never, because I often make myself a liar.

Me too Lynda, I have just begun a Mystery... LOL!

message 38: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pickstone | 529 comments Steampunk - I can't get my head round it. And Horror - I don't like being scared!

message 39: by Lisa (last edited Feb 14, 2016 03:33AM) (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I will try anything. That doesn't mean I like everything, lol. I would say the books I read the least are:

Westerns…like the John Wayne stuff.

Plays….ugh!! I really really cannot handle Shakespeare

Poetry as a whole. I can read some but it is not my first choice.

Vampires and werewolves don't do it for me.

Classics….I keep trying to read them. Some are OK….but I have been reading The Scarlet Letter since November, lol. I did actually like The Picture of Dorian Gray

I have trouble with some fantasy as I am a very literal person.
Christian books that are "too" preachy.

Romance is fine as long as there is a real story there.
Erotica…hmm…let's just say I am older and past that now. Is that good or bad, lol?

message 40: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pickstone | 529 comments yes - they just seem so dramatic! Probably good, Lisa.... :P

message 41: by Heddalove (new)

Heddalove I don't have any genres i would not read any books from. But i don't read so many just romance books.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I usually avoid steampunk, westerns, overtly religious fiction, erotica, and horror unless they are part of a reading challenge. Sci-fi, chick-lit and biographies are more tolerable, but even then my reaction will be greatly dependent on my mood, the subject matter and the author's writing style.

I was thinking if I were really desperate I bet I'd read the phone book. What am I saying? I've done that a few times!

I used to regularly read cereal boxes, etc. in childhood. I still do, but now I do it because of nutritional concerns and interest : )

message 47: by Caecilia (new)

Caecilia Saori funny thing. on the weekend, my bf asked me why I'm always reading contemporary books. when there are so many wonderful classics around.

took me some time to answer. in the end, I prefer new literature fiction because it gives me something to grow, in the current world I'm in. not that a classic couldn't. but a classic was considered "contemporary" in its time.

I'm still trying to make time for one classic per year min - classics allow me to refine my English. and, improve my personality.

Booked | 4 comments I've read books with erotic elements, but I don't just grab and read 'erotica.' :) I only recently heard (from my sister) of something called 'monster porn'?? Yeah, if that's a genre, it's a no-go for me! The first Twilight book is as close as I'm getting. lol
