Starting a little early 23% (view spoiler)[ So I thought it was really weird how fast the law enforcement got to the bus and took Celestine away. This book has me on edge but not in a good way, the rules are putting me off a little as they are just to absurd and there isn't any structure. The guild just randomly chooses who to pick on it seems. I know Ahern is trying to use it to symbolise how things have been absurd in our society too (flawed people not allowed seats on buses) but for me it isn't working so far. (hide spoiler)]

The teachers, her family, the press are all treating her like she is a murderer when she was trying to do a good dead. I don't see how this book has such good rating to be honest but I'm going to muddle through. I am interested in Carrick just because his character is so mysterious. (hide spoiler)]

It seems odd how connected Alpha is to the story, she's Celestines teacher, Carricks 'mother' and runs this organisation? Seems a bit far fetched. Up to chapter 22: (view spoiler)[ The system seems really unfair. Just because Celestine helped the old man she might have to go to prison. It doesn't seem right and the system seems to be very open to interpretation. It depends on what people deem to be flawed and for the most cases, there really is no crime. (hide spoiler)]

I just finished (view spoiler)[ So it's a little weird that we don't really see much from the love interests in this book but I kind of liked it, the focus was on Celestine. However, the Guild system really didn't make much sense to me and the ending wasn't very exciting, slightly bland even if she is on the run. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 29: (view spoiler)[ I can't believe that she ended up with 6 brandings. Crevan is so horrible, I can understand that he was angry with Celestine for not going along with what he said but to brand her spine. The punishment just doesn't seem to match the crime. (hide spoiler)]

Done: (view spoiler)[ I really enjoyed this book. It was such a quick read. I would have liked to have seen more world building as the whole system seemed very confusing. I thought that this was very fast paced and I think that this was helped by the short chapters. The ending was a little disappointing as it is being left open for the next book. There just seemed to be a lot of build up and then it just tails off. I did like that romance wasn't the main focus in this book. Although I fear that it will become more of a focus in the next book. The little quips like "they were almost right" isn't exactly foreshadowing since we've been blatantly told that things are going to go wrong, but it's helping a lot to build anticipation to see what exactly it is that goes wrong and how it's going to happen (hide spoiler)]

1-9 (view spoiler)[ This reminds me of how they made Jews wear arm bands. I like the way it's written. The things she points out, the specifics of thing, give insight into what the characters are really like. She really believes in the system. Most books like this are written from the point of view of a character more like Juniper rather than Celestine. I wonder what's going to happen. She said that was the last perfect day, so clearly that's an indicator of things to come. (hide spoiler)]

On another note, this book feels extremely allegorical for the holocaust or racism in general. Honestly it is affecting me much more than just entertainment wise, it really has me thinking. Was this how people looked at Jews during the holocaust? In a society where they punish flaws there is so much pressure to be perfect. (hide spoiler)]

People stand by and take videos of assaults rather than intervene. People stood by while Jews were thrown into ovens. It's horrific, but it's 100% possible. Every leading figure in every civil rights movement had to face punishment for what they believed was right. In order to affect change you have to be willing to risk breaking laws that are inhumane. Hiding Jews was illegal. What Rosa Parks did was illegal. Martin Luther king Jr was imprisoned. All these people did was what they believed was right. (hide spoiler)]
