New members (and old) please introduce yourselves. I hope everyone becomes an active member of the group.

I am Koren from Minnesota. I like all nonfiction. I have 4 grown boys, 7 grandchildren, 3 cats and 1 very old dog.

Lady ♥ Belleza (bella_foxx) | 222 comments I am Bella from NYC, total city girl. Will read anything that catches my fancy, and real life is much more interesting than fiction! No kids, no pets, no SO - just me and my scary brain. And an iPhone.

Jerry-Book | 52 comments I am Jerry-Book from Richmond, Virginia. However, I was originally born and raised in Iowa. I love history like Mary Beard's SPQR, non-fiction like the Swerve, science fiction like Dune, biographies like Jean Smith's FDR, classics like Pride and Prejudice, and fantasy like the Lord of the Rings.

I am a Shelfari Refugee still trying to find my way in these new clubs.

Fishface | 2015 comments I'm Eileen from Michigan. Grew up outside Detroit but now live out in the country. I work, read, watch movies and sleep. I like to read a lot of things, but true crime is a favorite. Also books about fish, other animals, nature in general; human evolution (or lack of it); World War One; sci-fi; some fiction; oh, heck, a lot of things. I don't like anything oversweet.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I am Selina from New Zealand. I like memoirs and gardening books, and sometimes I can find gardening memoirs.
I live with two parents, a cat, and two chickens. And a garden that needs looking after.

message 8: by Robin (new)

Robin I somehow missed this discussion. I'm Robin and I am a California girl born and raised. I live in Northern CA with my husband of 36 years who was my high school sweetheart. We have a grown daughter who is married and pregnant with grand baby number four! They live in Texas which is just too far away!

I enjoy almost every kind of book. I love mysteries, cozy mysteries (they are two different things in my mind), biographies, memoirs, travel essays, classic BritLit, and historical fiction. I also still love children's books and am the reason my daughter needed to buy a new bookcase for the kids!

Someday, when retirement is a reality, we would like to move out of the big city and live somewhere quiet.

Jerry-Book | 52 comments Well, maybe this will work as long as the groups don't get too large like some of the other GR groups. Also, you cannot comment without following their rules.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Jerry-Book wrote: "Well, maybe this will work as long as the groups don't get too large like some of the other GR groups. Also, you cannot comment without following their rules."

I don't have any problem with a group putting some rules into place with regard to comments. I've done so with a couple of the groups I moderate.

It IS excessive to have the "rules" appear each and every time someone goes to post, however. I know one group moderator who did this recently and participation dropped off markedly. I tried to let the moderator know that this was off-putting to most members but the mod wouldn't hear it and insisted everyone needed reminders of these rules. S*I*G*H - that group has closed as of May 31.

message 17: by Lady ♥ Belleza (new)

Lady ♥ Belleza (bella_foxx) | 222 comments I have a few rules in my groups but i set mine to show up the first time someone posts.

message 18: by Koren (new)

Koren (koren56) | 3986 comments Mod
I only have one rule and that is Be Nice. I do not tolerate rudeness.

message 19: by Karin (new)

Karin | 799 comments A few rules are okay, but having them show up every time you post is annoying. Once is good. Since groups can be oriented to different sets of readers, guidelines can be helpful.

One of the best things I ever heard as a parent was to make as few rules as possible for your kids and to limit them to three things, safety, consideration of others and stewardship (taking care of things). Sadly, my eldest needed half a million very specific rules because she would,on purpose I might add, take every single rule and bend it any way she could to get out of it. But we don't need that here :)

I am looking forward to hearing about what you all are reading and getting to know you better.

Is Goodreads a US site? I wonder where other people go that read in English, do the Brits have their own groups?

That's a good question Selina. I tried to search where Goodreads is based out of and couldn't find it. Goodreads is owned by Amazon, which is an American company, so that might explain it.

I believe Marlene is in the True Crime group. I don't think she is in this group. I haven't seen her post for a long time.

Huh. Would My Friend Dahmer be an example of a nonfiction graphic memoir? Or do you mean 'graphic' in the sense of 'gory' or 'sexually explicit'? :)

Are there a lot of those to be had? Derf's is the only one I think I've ever seen.

message 38: by Sheri (last edited Sep 01, 2016 09:05AM) (new)

Sheri S. | 0 comments Yes, there are surprisingly a lot of them! I get them at my local library and usually have to sift through the fiction and nonfiction. One of my favorites is Maus and its sequel Maus II. I would highly recommend reading one Graphic Novel/Memoir just to see if it's something you like. I love them...and continue to be surprised at myself for liking them so much.

message 39: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2015 comments Oh, for Pete's sake, I read MAUS for a class and knew perfectly well it was autobiographical. Where's my brain!?

I looked on the jobs page and it shows that Goodreads is based in San Francisco.

message 41: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (bkmcavoy) | 8 comments there is someone else in this group from MI?!? Oh cool.

The comment about how many of us are from the US is interesting. I didn't realize that until I saw Selina's observation. Interesting. I'm on another social media platform, Quora, where everyone seems to be either from the Middle East of India.
