Gaines Post (gainespost) | 6 comments Hi all :-)

About twelve or so years ago I read a book, or perhaps even a couple of books in a series? not sure... anyway, I'm trying to recall the title. I don't think it was a new book at the time, but I could be wrong. Can anyone help me?

What I remember: It was science fiction, with several (very imaginative, incidentally) species of aliens in it. There were some called the Scarecrows I think? Because they looked like scarecrows. And one that was like a Dodo sort of. And more that I can't recall.

The method of interstellar travel was, in my opinion at the time, quite novel; it basically involved this series of boxes that were a bit like 3D printers I suppose. You walk into the box, it copies your body completely -- right down to the subatomic structure -- and whisks that data via subspace or something like that over to a receiving "box," where a copy of you is then produced. There are therefore two of you; one still existing in the original location, and one at the destination. (I've seen a very similar idea used recently in the tv show, Dark Matter)

That's all I can really remember. Not much to go by, sorry! But any help would be much appreciated :-)

Andy | 2124 comments This is Fred Pohl's Eschaton trilogy I think The Eschaton Sequence

Here is a detailed review that mentions the Scarecrows http://www.yukonbooks.com/shop/custom...

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I looked at it, and at the individual novels that make up that trilogy, and they don't ring a bell. I don't think I've ever read any Pohl (though he is on my to-read list).

Gaines Post (gainespost) | 6 comments I just read a bit about the Eschaton Sequence and it appears a good deal of it takes place on Earth, correct? Well, the book(s) I'm thinking of do not take place on Earth.

Some takes place on Earth but a lot of the first book takes place in space. The series has the duplicating teleport booths and aliens called Scarecrows (and others called Docs and Dopeys) so I really think this is it.

Andy | 2124 comments Pohl did use the same kind of teleport device in another multialien pair of novels Farthest Star Farthest Star and Wall around a Star Wall Around a Star

Alright, I'll have another look. Thank you so much Andy!

Gaines Post (gainespost) | 6 comments Hmm. The character name "Dan Dannerman" definitely rings a bell. I guess I had forgotten I've read these. Thanks again!
