Delaney (catherinedelaney) | 4 comments Hi! Thanks for the add. I LOVE reading spiritual/enlightened books. So I'm so excited I found this group!
A little about me: I am a huge animal lover (especially dogs) , an aspiring jewelry artisan, and I identify as an empath.
Currently I am reading Trust Your Vibes by Sonia Choquette and highly recommend it. I want to read all of her books now!

Delaney (catherinedelaney) | 4 comments Oh, I usually have 2 or more books going at the same time. I just started Dancing The Body of Light by Dona Holleman. For you yogis, it's a must have on your shelf. Loving it. Beautifully written blend of traditional yoga philosophy & "the future of yoga" (perfect pose, empty mind, wide heart).

Saiisha, some books are not meant for discussion in this group ;-) but I thought I would mention what I was reading anyway; as to get a fuller picture of "who I am" I suppose. I have read all of Gabrielle Bernstein's other books I'm just getting inside this one, but I would say I may have "outgrown her audience" in a certain respect, however, I'm always looking something new or see something in a different way.

As for The Disappearance of the Universe, I don't think I had any clue what it was about when I started reading it and so I'm just seeing where the journey goes...I think it's a long and deep, but, fascinating read.

I've read Trust Your Vibes awhile back, maybe 2 years ago, whenever it came out, but I was looking at it the other day and thinking of reading it again. Excited to hear your thoughts after you've finished. I just looked, I finished reading it in Feb of 14 and gave it 5 stars, one of the many things I love about goodreads.

Welcome Delaney, happy to have you join our little club :) Feel free to post your own questions, start your own threads and conversations.

I was just recommending Sonia Choquette's books to another of our club members - love her work! And thanks for your recommendation of the Body of Light - I'll check it out. And I'm like you - I have several books going at the same time as well :)

Funny you mention that Julie - I've felt the same way about Gabby Bernstein's books, but I think they're great for someone starting out on their spiritual path, and I'd definitely recommend them. And yes, Disappearance of the Universe is definitely a walk (or a tumble) down a rabbit hole :)

Julie | 53 comments Has anyone read "Love Warrior" by Glennon Doyle Melton? To me, wow, what a book. The reason I think I really really loved it (can I say I loved a book?) is because I was so not a fan of her first book "Carry On, Warrior". I felt in the first book I could not relate, and I felt that she gave religion too much power (my personal opinion, not saying there isn't power in religion) and in this book she (maybe realizing it, maybe not) she embraces her Spirituality, albeit through pain more than joy and realizes (in my opinion) that it's okay to be your own brand of God / Love / Spirituality and that other people, just like you and me, don't have the answers for her with their version of religion. I was totally blown away by her growth from her college days, to her first book, to this new book. Easy to read, insightful and so many moments when her wording totally got through to me.

Interesting reads. How are you liking The Universe Has Your Back? It keeps popping up for me. Not sure if that is a sign to read or a little reassurance.

Julie | 53 comments Kris wrote: "Julie wrote: "I have just finished "The Truth of All That Is: The Angel Book to Enlightenment and Personal Transformation" by Amelia Bert. I am simultaneously reading "The Universe Has Your Back: T..."

Kris, What I'm about to say may not be a popular answer. I'm 1/2 way through the book. It's not where I feel like I need to put it down but it's not awe inspiring and eye opening either (from my perspective).

What I will say is this, it can be construed as negative and for that I apologize. I feel the reason it keeps popping up for you is marketing, not the Universe telling you to read it. I know it's a slippery slope, but when I see someone selling a Spiritual book and hear them say "I'm #1 on the NY Times Best Seller List"...it doesn't sit well with me. So that's part of it. I've read a lot of Spiritual books and I'm just a seeker looking to find inspiration in people, blogs, books, art, etc. This book, like many books, does not lack ego. So that's a bit disheartening to me. I feel that I'm not special, if I can see the ego leaking through, I'm sure many others can to.

Anyway, lol, more of an answer than what you were probably expecting. If you've been on your Spiritual journey for awhile, I would say skip it. It's a cross between A Course in Miracles and The Law of Attraction, and although I feel that sometimes they intersect, sometimes they contradict and I feel that in this book.

Best to you. If you decide to read it please let me know what you think.

Blanche | 5 comments I read a fiction book and then a bit of a factual book each night and currently the "factual" book I am reading is:

Arcturian Songs of the Masters of Light: Arcturian Star Chronicles Volume Four: 4 by Patricia Pereira

I love these books. They make so much sense and am sad that I am on the last in the set.

I always like to make a point of finishing a book like you used to do Barbara. I love to read, for fiction, really long books so sometimes it takes longer to get into them before they can really get going.
I did however give up with a few over the years. Such as an adult CS Lewis one which I was really disappointed to do as I loved the Narnia books. Also The Old Curiosity Shop I was so disappointed to find this one so boring as it sounded so interesting! Maybe I should give it a go again all these years later!

Barbara | 127 comments Good Morning All,
I just finished Being Mortal by Atul Gwande, non-fiction. Very good read about how we approach the end of our earthly life, medical approaches and all of the changes we sometimes have to face. It provides lots of food for thought so that we can direct our own journey when the time comes. Sometimes sad but full of thought provoking ideas. If your parents are facing decisions like these, this book is so good to read!

message 116: by Julie (new)

Julie | 53 comments I am currently reading Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza...so far so good, only on the first chapter. One of those books you really need to absorb if you want to actually "change your brain", etc.

I just finished First Intelligence (about intuition) by Simone Wright, well written and intelligent look on the subject.

I also just finished a fiction book called St. Nick by Alan Russell, thought it was a light hearted holiday read, and it 1/2 was and 1/2 of it had me sobbing like crazy.

message 117: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 127 comments Okay this is a bit off topic - but I try to check books out from the library when I can because I spend so much on books and really have no more room to store them at home. Problem I have is that very few of the titles I search for are in the library - what a bummer!
Do any of you have the same situation? I love getting referrals from everyone!

I've been having some great discussions about this book (Being Mortal) with a friend who has an elderly father who's slowly fading. And I'm not sure if I'm ready for the book yet, but I do plan to read it some day - thanks for the reminder Barbara!

As for buying versus borrowing books, I used to love collecting books, but I have the same concern as you - not to kill trees to read a book, but I don't like electronic readers (kindle, nook, etc.) so I mostly read only what I find at my library. Any books I do buy are ones that I want to re-read, which are very few!

Barbara | 127 comments I just finished "In Search of Stones" by M. Scott Peck, who previously wrote "The Road Less Traveled". This travelogue encompassed many ancient stones in England and Scotland along with the mid-life issues the popular psychiatrist and his wife were dealing with. It was a good read. Next, I'm reading "Minding the Body, Mending the MInd" by Joan Borysenko. I've seen this book referenced in so many articles that I'm anxious to get started.

I'm currently reading your recommendation - "Unveiled Mysteries' by Godfre Ray King :) It seems like a combination of Seth Speaks and a western version of Autobiography of a Yogi! I'm enjoying it so far - I'm about half-way in...

Romance, Reincarnation, Redemption... I'm reading this book called Green Darkness, by Anya Seton - if you're into historical fiction, you might enjoy this novel set in the 60's but goes back and forth to the 16th century Tudor times. So understandably, a lot of young-soul passions and prejudices, but it's still fun to go back to historical times that we might have lived in. There's also the requisite Indian guru-doctor among several other interesting characters threading through the plot. I'm only a quarter of the way through the book, but it's satisfyingly long!

A few other reincarnation themed novels I've enjoyed: "My name is Memory" by Ann Brashares, "The Rose Garden" by Susanna Kearsley, "Replay" by Ken Grimwood... come to mind

Do you have any favorites? (If you like this theme)

message 125: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 127 comments I just finished "The Lost Star of Myth and Time". This book looks into the ancient myths that were passed down in cultures, but we have no proof of, and ties it to astrological/calendars we've found of the Mayans and other ancient peoples. Fascinating read and provides lots of things to think about. I've just stared a non-fiction book titled "First Ladies" about the wives of the Presidents. I've learned some new info but some of it is recycled news.

message 126: by Julie (new)

Julie | 53 comments I am currently reading "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" which is being most helpful and ironically funny at times.

However, my reply isn't about what I'm currently reading. It's a throwback memory I had from what Barbara had currently read and I thought I'd share as it says so much about my journey.

I had also read "A Road Less Traveled" awhile awhile back by M. Scott Peck and soon thereafter my then husband walked out in the most grand, dramatic, and horrendous ways and he told me that he left me a book on my nightstand that would explain so much and it was "The People of the Lie" by M Scott Peck, sitting right by the side of my bed, I kid you not - if anyone has read this far. I have yet to read the book or to throw it out. I know basically what it says and a friend tried to read it for me and although I was already on my Spiritual journey, this singular situation turbo charged it.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking the conversation or if I had mentioned if before. It's just so pivotal in my adult life I thought it worth mentioning.

Kris (krisg11) | 27 comments I am reading The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World. Interesting read. It would be great to see this in a series of Ted Talks. I just started reading Yoga Beyond the Mat: How to Make Yoga Your Spiritual Practice. This book is different than other Yoga philosophy books I've read.

message 129: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 127 comments Julie, your husband leaving the book for you to read says more about him than it does about you. For some reason, he needed to hurt you, and I'm glad you haven't read the book. If he gets back to you and asks if you've read it, I'd reply that you prefer face to face dialogue to problem solve rather than just walking out. I'm so sorry this happened to you but remember how strong you really are - you'll get through this and may even be glad it happened one day.
Take care of yourself.

Barbara - I've heard of that book - "the Lost Star of Myth and Time" somewhere else as well... it does sound fascinating - I might look it up!

Julie - I've enjoyed the "life-changing magic of tidying up" :) As for the other book by M Scott Peck, I hadn't heard of it before, but to throw it at you as someone's sanctimonious vision of life without the depth of experience sounds very unpleasant, to say the least!! And I totally agree with Barbara's response!

Kris - I just looked up Yoga Beyond the Mat, and it does sound like a fascinating read... thanks for the recommendation!

Barbara | 127 comments I'm currently reading 'Serpent in the Sky' which is based on the research done by the Alsatian philosopher/Egyptologist R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz. DeLubicz studied Egypt for over 30 years and his original text is in French, I think. This is a fascinating book with many insightful ideas that continue to be studied today. It's fun for me because Egypt has always had so many unusual ruins that continue to challenge scientists with the astronomical accuracy they pose. On nights when I'm not focused enough to read this, I'm reading 'A Path with Heart' by Jack Kornfield. Both are wonderful!

I'm reading a book called THE MEMORY PAINTER, by Gwendolyn Womack. It's a vividly imagined story of an artist who's been haunted his whole life by remembering past lives. As a Samurai warrior in Japan, an Indian Buddhist monk in China, a Viking seafarer, and many others. He paints detailed panels of these scenes, one of which attracts a neuro-chemist who has a recurring dream of the exact scene in the painting. The story was easy to follow along, despite the many characters spanning many periods of history, and kept my interest. The author makes a lot of assumptions, and some of them are not quite believable, but it's still a fast-paced thriller, a great mystery, and a romantic adventure, all set on the theme of remembering past incarnations.

I'm also re-reading Sarah Susanka's NOT SO BIG LIFE - I love how she applies her expertise in architecture to bring spiritual concepts to life. It helps make abstract concepts more approachable. I just looked up the book and it sounds fascinating! I've always wondered what it would be like to try LSD, just to get an experience of it all, but I've been told it would be like walking into a room with a thousand mirrors of your mind. That would be awesome if the mind is conscious; but maybe more like hell if it isn't! :)
