Elena (helen2u) Flavorwire article
http://flavorwire.com/559894/gloria-s...

''Gloria Steinem appeared on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher last night for a one-on-one interview with the host to promote her new book, My Life on the Road. And midway through what turned out to be a mostly measured, ten-minute conversation between the 81-year-old feminist icon and a comedian whose track record on women’s issues has always been spotty at best, Maher asked Steinem why she thought so many young women were supporting Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.

At first, Steinem — who had praised young women’s activism just moments earlier — was cautious. “Women get more radical as we get older,” she said, explaining that women lose power as they age while men gain it, and feeling oppressed radicalizes you. Steinem did not explain why she felt Clinton was a more radical choice for the nomination than Sanders. Instead, the activist who once declared Sanders an “honorary woman” told Maher, “When you’re young, you’re thinking, ‘Where are the boys? The boys are with Bernie?'” Maher immediately realized her statement would be a controversial one — and, indeed, it has already drawn anger from young, female Sanders supporters on social media''.

You're welcome, when I stumbled upon the article had to share immediately! Same here, I want to know what other folks think of it.

Caroline Gabe (cmgabe) | 23 comments I was looking on the boards specifically for this conversation.

I am pretty disappointed actually. With both her and Madeleine Albright. It goes against what I thought I have been reading in her book - yes, women need to stick together, but politically manipulating young women by saying they are just after boys...how is that helpful? It's undermining women's intellectual capabilities.

I keep thinking that if I am supposed to vote for Hillary solely because she is a woman, why not vote for Carla Fiorina...?

I saw on FB that Albright said there is a special place in hell for women who don't vote for Clinton. How lovely.

Urszula S | 8 comments I agree with the comments here. I am very disappointed as well. I haven't finish the book yet but now I have a quite different perspective about the author.

message 10: by Tim (new)

Tim Hey everyone, just wanted to tell you that on the other thread regarding Ms. Steinem's statement in regards to women and politics (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) someone has posted that Ms. Steinem responded to this little perdicament in regards to what she said. Do check it out, and if you don't mind my saying so, I think it's best that we don't use 2 separate threads to be talking about this because as has just been shown, it can cause some people to miss out on what is being said on the other thread.

So, Urszula, you may want to read Ms. Steinam's response first. Maybe it'll clear the issue up, maybe not, that's up to you, but you should at least know she has responded. :)

well I checked and the other thread didn't post the videos, so made a separate one, sorry! I will check because this is burning me that's how curious I am about it.

carla | 6 comments I was quite disappointed with Steinem. After reading this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/08/us/...

Albright's rhetoric turned ugly with "“There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!”

Tim Urszula wrote: "I read the article from NY Times. Is that the one you were referring to Tim?"

You mean the one Carla posted? No. On the thread I sent you'll see a comment by someone named Christamer, in which they list a quote from Ms. Steinam's facebook page, regarding what she said in the Bill Maher interview. I think it was one of the first 20 comments so it should be easy enough to find.

Found it. Thanks Tim!

She did apologize and I give her credit for that. However, I expected more from her. It seems to me that since she is supporting Clinton she wants every feminist to support her as well. It is like since we all want to have equal rights we need to blindly follow one another.
In my opinion we should think for ourselves and stand up for ourselves (which is often mistaken by following the same people). I do support Hilary as a feminist but I don't believe she is fit to be a president. This is my personal opinion but it does not make me a person who believes woman do not deserve to have all the rights.

message 18: by Serene (new)

Serene | 13 comments I think this is just another type of stereotype people fall for. "All women should vote for Hillary" is BS. It's just like Obama in 2008. You want to vote for someone because he's (fill in the blank black, gay, woman, etc) but you don't care that they can't do the job or is too senile, or to liberal/conservative or not a skilled communicator to do the job? That's ridiculous. Having a woman President would be wonderful - if she was intelligent, able to lead, spoke well, wanted to bring the two sides together, was willing to work with Congress on issues, had a great knowledge of foreign policy, etc.
I'm not voting for anyone simply because they are black, gay or a woman.
As a Baha'i, a member of the Baha'i Faith, we have believed in the equality of the genders since the beginning in 1844 in Persia. bahai.org
When the first woman is elected President, I pray she will do well for this country.

Just a reminder to check the discussion board for the subject you are interested in posting about before creating a new thread.

helen2u Wrote: well I checked and the other thread didn't post the videos, so made a separate one, sorry! I will check because this is burning me that's how curious I am about it."

In the future, please contribute relevant links to discussions that have already been started rather than starting a new thread on the same topic. You can go ahead and add those links to the other thread on this subject.

We're a big group, so it's important that everyone make an effort to keep things organized, and that includes checking for duplicate threads before posting your own. Otherwise the Mods have to go about locking and archiving the duplicate threads.

In the interest of organization, I'm going to lock and archive this thread, as the other one was created first and has a longer string of comments.
