I read this book around the years 2000-2002. I don't think it was that old at the time, but I never thought to check. The version I read had a black cover (not that that is much help!)

The main character was a male - possibly called gnat, or something similar. He was born of two fae creatures, possibly fairies and his parents were very beautiful. It was quite a shock to everyone when he was born looking less than perfect. However, his parents still wanted to give him a name worthy of beauty. When he was supposed to be christened, the priest (?) swatted a bug away and made a noise and that became the child's name.

He was sent to live with some monks but failed at that too. I think it culminated by him getting drink and being sent on a 'quest' - they mustn't have been able to kick him out. He was slightly clumsy - or stuff seemed to go awry when he was there. Along the way a heap of weird stuff happens, he meets a girl, falls in love, becomes a hero.

It wasn't a serious book, just a lot of fun. I'd class it as fantasy and romance but it was funny as well.
