Gaines Post (gainespost) | 234 comments Hi all :-)

About twelve or so years ago I read a book, or perhaps even a couple of books in a series? not sure... anyway, I'm trying to recall the title. I don't think it was a new book at the time, but I could be wrong. Can anyone help me?

What I remember: It was science fiction, with several (very imaginative, incidentally) species of aliens in it. There were some called the Scarecrows I think? Because they looked like scarecrows. And one that was like a Dodo sort of. And more that I can't recall.

The method of interstellar travel was, in my opinion at the time, quite novel; it basically involved this series of boxes that were a bit like 3D printers I suppose. You walk into the box, it copies your body completely -- right down to the subatomic structure -- and whisks that data via subspace or something like that over to a receiving "box," where a copy of you is then produced. There are therefore two of you; one still existing in the original location, and one at the destination. (I've seen a very similar idea used recently in the tv show, Dark Matter)

That's all I can really remember. Not much to go by, sorry! But any help would be much appreciated :-)

If you don't get an answer here, there's another group you might try:
