I'm looking for a book that I've read a couple of years ago about a ranch or hazienda where an oil drilling operation is about to start. The book describes the events and it's characters very well. I remember that there was something with 'Villa Blanca' or so. I would like to buy the book for a friend.
The book should be from the 70s and it has been popular with some left wing people at that time. It is an adult book and I guess it is interesting for for people in their twenties. There is some capitalism criticism there, but not too much.
The story is about a South American ranch or hazienda. One of the main figures is a worker (Pablo?) there who works hard o feed his family and is happy with the simple life there. When oil has been found on the property this changes everything. The worker is forced to leave and has to go to the big city. He doesn't like it there, but it's th only place where he can live. Other characters are the ranch owner and the oil baron. The book aims to describe their lives and find reasons for their actions. Each of the characters is developed very well and shows what their individual prisons are like. For example the oil baron has a daughter who is a princess and comes to him only to get more money for her lifestyle. But this is the only way for him to interact with her, so he keeps on earning more money and giving it to her.
Thank you so much!
