SOLVED. Historical romance novel - marries a man she doesn't like and spends the entire book trying to get away from him [s]

I read this book about 4 years ago. It is an adult historical romance novel.

I think it starts off in New Orleans with a debutante. Somehow she ends up married to this man who is new in town. She has a maid/governess that likes to light candles and things (maybe Voodoo?). Her new husband hates that. She is scared of him. She doesn't have a father but the mother is there.

They go up river to his plantation and there is talk of a slave revolt. She hates it there and somehow leaves.

At some point she gets to a riverboat and the men keep talking about "the captain" and what he will do when he finds her. She jumps off into the river and is rescued by a woman and maybe her son? (I am not positive about that part).

At some point she ends up in a small town working because she has no money.

And the last part I remember is that she ends up back on that riverboat but I don't remember how it ends.

This are the big details I remember - I think it started in New Orleans. Some of it may have taken place in Natchez - but I am not positive. It's definitely historical - maybe regency?

I can't remember any of the names. I read it twice - the second time I didn't realize I had already read it but I liked it so much better that time.

I would really appreciate the help. It was a paperback but I don't know when it was published.

I have only read the first one in this series and it definitely doesn't fit. Maybe the second one fits? It doesn't sound too similar, but maybe you'd like it anyway. :-)
