Anita Pomerantz | 9299 comments Does anyone have this yet on their homepage?

https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/6...

I find this actually a scary prospect. How is this going to fit on my home page?

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments I saw that too. I am not impressed. They should just make it an optikn for those who want to link them in this way.

Eta: Apparently you can turn it off. I found this in the comments.

If you don't want it, you can turn it off in settings on the kindle. You turn off the home page view and just have the list of your books as before, with a bit nicer overall design.

For those that want to turn it off
Settings-->Device Options-->Personalize your Kindle-->Advanced Options-->turn top button( Home Page View) on or off

Also it is only available for the e-Readers, not the tablets (Fire).

I wondered about that, because I didn't see anything like that on my Fire tablet.

Anita Pomerantz | 9299 comments Yay, thanks for sharing those instructions, Sara.

I will see how it looks, but can't imagine it's going to be a good thing.

that's idiotic. I own all my want to read books.

Several years ago, I moved everything off the To Read shelf onto an exclusive "in my possession" shelf. I have an older Kindle, but I'm glad I did that so that this "feature" won't be happening to me when I do get a new one.

This is a very good idea (possible on Goodreads, and difficult on Shelfari). In my case, most of my to-read books are actually not books that I own . . .but nonetheless, there are hundreds of them, and I don't necessarily want to see them on the front page of my Kindle.

Still like the idea of an "in my possession shelf".

I have an exclusive "wish list" shelf too. And a "set aside" shelf for those books that I lusted after and then turned out to be duds. Feel free to customize your shelves!

I thought you could only have one exclusive shelf? I had an exclusive wish list shelf which I renamed wishlist-upcoming because I couldn't have a separate shelf for each. Also my Want to Read is really books I own, but I can't rename it. And it seems to add any new shelves the book has to be marked read. Unless i'm missing something, which is very possible.

To have a "set aside" shelf, I have to admit that I would actually have to set aside books from time to time. I think I would have only two books on that shelf. I'm very compulsive!

I am a little confused about the concept of the exclusive shelves vs. regular shelves as per Linda's note? I haven't actually tried to do much yet as I'm still copying all my reviews over (SO TEDIOUS), but any shelf guidance would be great.

Elizabeth (Alaska) A book must be on one, but only one, Exclusive Shelf. The default shelves of Read, To Read, and Currently Reading are already exclusive shelves. You can create other exclusive shelves.

Mostly you will probably want to create non-exclusive shelves. Books can be on many non-exclusive shelves. On the Edit Shelves page, you can see a couple of other options. You can feature one shelf on your profile page. You can select and de-select shelves that Goodreads will use for recommendations. (The recommendations engine in the top menu bar on every page is very good, though you in this group probably don't need recommendations beyond your friends and this group!)

While working with shelves, there is also a batch edit feature, whereby you can move groups of books to new/additional shelves. As you get to thinking about how you want to customize your shelves, this might come in very handy.

Ahhh, this explanation is very helpful. I really need to think about this more.

Am I able to see your shelves, Elizabeth, or are they private?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes, I have a public profile. You can see the shelves of anyone at GR who has a public profile. Also worth noting at GR is that all reviews are public, including those who have a private profile.

But here is a link to mine:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I don't do nearly as much organizing of my shelves as many here at GR, but I have done a few things having "listened" to how others do it. When you have time, you might enjoy looking at the shelf organization of others.

I just hope I can find the directions the next time I take my Kindle ereader off airplane mode.

Ahh, I wasn't sure how it all worked. I just was interested to see how you set up your shelves, and I agree that looking at those of others may be helpful! Of course at this point I'd just be very pleased to get all my old stuff onto my shelves. Sigh.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anita wrote: "Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Of course at this point I'd just be very pleased to get all my old stuff onto my shelves."

Of course. Rearranging/reorganizing may or may not be easier virtually, than it is reorganizing closets in your house, but it can be done, once you've got everything there. Don't fret, it will all work out.

Elizabeth (Alaska) This isn't about shelves, but about another feature in your My Books. On the review page, if you haven't seen it already, is a "more details" link. You can record who recommended the book to you or to whom you might recommend it. There is also a small text field (512 characters as I recall) called Private Notes. This is a field no one but you can see and you can use it for any purpose whatsoever. You can also display that field on your My Books pages if you so choose.

One of the reasons I have some shelves for published dates is because my main challenge group always has a date driven task. Sometimes it isn't the published date, but an author born/died date. I use the date shelves for pub dates and then put the born/died info in my private notes field. Yes, that info is usually on the author page, but putting it in private notes helps me see it without clicking around.

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I actually really like the look of the new Home screen. I just updated my Kindle Paperwhite and the Goodreads To-Be-Read shelf isn't bad. I have over 1000 books in that shelf and it doesn't slow down my Kindle or take up any room.

Here's a picture I took of my Kindle so you can see what it looks like. (The image is on its side for some reason and I don't know how to fix it.)

punxsygal | 307 comments I like the idea of self-tailored exclusive shelves. Taking the advice of another member, I set up "did not finish" shelf where I can place the books that fit the name.

I had no idea that you could create additional exclusive shelves. This helps me out tremendously. At Shelfari I kept the TBR shelf as books I physically own while the wishlist shelf were just ones that I had read a review of and thought sounded interesting. Now I'll be able to keep them separated again. Which is really good considering how easy it is to add books when scrolling through a list. Thanks for letting us know!

I spent several hours setting up my shelves today. I'm still not done, but I'm really happy with the way I have it setup now, the extra 'exclusive' shelves are great.

I've only added a DNF shelf - great having that choice! What are your additional exclusive shelves?

Well the want to read shelf used to be books I owned, but I now use that for my upcoming books - mostly those from the library and books I plan to read for challenges or tags.

I added a 'own' shelf for all the books I own, I will probably update that today, I know it's missing some recent purchases.

I added a 'wish-list' shelf for books I've read about or heard about that I might want to read. This shelf is pretty fluid because I don't like it to get too big, so I am constantly adding and removing.

Right now I think that's enough, those are the shelves I would use the most.
