I read this book as a kid. It was about a cat that basically belonged to a few families. I think one had a young girl in it, one had an elderly woman, and maybe one other family. The cat would spend a few hours, (maybe a day or two) at each house, and be fed by each. Somehow I think they all figure out what its been doing. And then decide just to let it be and continue to "share" the cat.

In my family, we call the wandering "owned" stray cats who come to our back doors for a snack and a pet a "Six Dinner Sid."
