I have just finished reading infernal devices and enjoyed them thoroughly. Not my usual type of read but a work colleague convinced me to give it a try. I have just picked up a city of bones and 20 pages in I'm really struggling. Is it worth perusing?

Keep going!!! It's definitely worth reading. I have to say I like the infernal devices better but the mortal instruments is still amazing!
Yeah keep going! Both series are amazing. I usually lean a little more towards TMI because it was the series that I read first.
I'm on chapter 4 and it's still hard going but then I did find that with TID. I'm hoping I'll find a point o no return like I did with that!
I like both but I'm leaning towards TMI more since I read the books first and have a longer emotional attachment to the characters. Both series are wonderful, though!
See I think I'm feeling the same except the other way round. I'm emotionally tied to TID. I love historic novels as well.
TMI all the way, it's a way more expansive story line. While i know it's a prequel it felt rushed, (the 1st one specifically)
There are pros and cons for both of them, but I overall enjoyed the Infernal Devices more. TID just made me feel so many feels, more than what I felt for TMI, and that's saying something! Although I lean towards TID more often, sometimes I choose TMI. It's a constant conflict that I may never be able to solve.

Like I'll choose TID but when I listen to the music in the Shadowhunters show, I'll pick up a TMI book.
It too took me at least 2 weeks to actually read City of Bones which is rare. But I ate up Infernal Devices like it was nothing. So I will forever remain with TID as my number one, but TMI is up there as well.
I found people prefer TID over TMI. Personally I was hooked on city of bones right away and literally love and read all of Cassie's books. Try to push through it, u wont regret it, hopefully

I thought the writing in TID was absolutely beautiful. I loved the poetry and I'm just a sucker for Will Herondale hahaBut it's honestly hard for me to choose a favorite series, because I look at all the Shadowhunters novels as one
But yeah TMI was more teenager-y I guess
TID came across as more sophisticated and unlike City of Bones, Clockwork Angel captured me immediately
I could read them all over again

I was thinking I WOULD start reading them all over again. I've just finished 'Lady Midnight' and am have withdrawals, haha! Thought the only way to get my fix would be to revisit 'City of Bones.'
I know what you meeeeeean!! I've been reading other books since I finished Lady Midnight, but nothing is as good!! Trying NOT to get into a book slump haha....so obsessed and in love with everything Cassandra Clare writes
Infernal devices ALL THE WAY. I've never loved anyone else in my whole life this much, as I love Will Herondale. ALthough, The MOrtal Instrument series are also one of the best ones I've ever read!
Although the mortal instruments were amazing I do love the infernal devices more!! The Infernal Devices were just so beautiful and Tessa's love for books was very relatable .
I think I'm the ONLY one who loves The Mortal Instruments more than The Infernal Devices... sorry guys, but the heart wants what it wants. hehe
I think the Infernal Devices were better because Tessa story is just so well played-out. The way I feel when I read the Infernal Devices is just indescribable. Clockwork Princess really made my heart ache. I don't want to give any spoilers just in case, so I'm just going to say that Tessa's, Jem's, and Will's stories end wonderfully but are also tragic. It's hard to completely describe how much I love this series without giving too much away, but the way she weaves the two series together is so incredible and one of my favorite details is how Henry and Magnus invented the Portal together! (sorry if that was kind of a spoiler...)

Like when in City of Bones, Jace uses a Sensor, and then in Clockwork Angel, Henry talks about the Sensor. It's really cool!

I hope you're sticking it out and finishing TMI. It's a great story line. With that said, I do prefer TID over TMI because I think the story in that series is a bit better. TMI has a longer plot to work with so character development and such can really bloom, but there are parts of the story that drag on just a bit. With TID I feel there is more tension and the rewards are so much greater. But I love this whole world, which is why I'm hoping you stick with it ;).
I definitely prefer tmi to tid probably because I read them first and I'm more emotionally attached to the characters.
I think which series you read first contributes a lot to your preference of the series. I read halfway through TMI but I stopped and I read through ALL of TID before finishing TMI. I think that when you read one of the series first, you usually will prefer it over the other because you tend to see both of them interconnected. If you read TMI first, you'll see little parts weaved into TID, but if you read TID, you'll see it in reverse.
My favorite was Infernal Devices, but I also love TMI. It's very different than what I usually read because it's set in the 1800s but I think that's what makes it better.
Same... I loved Clockwork Princess and it is one of my favourite books but in the long run I like TMI better.
I love both TMI and TID. TID is my all-time favourite trilogy. TMI is one of my all-time favourite series. I love them both so much. My favourite of TID is Clockwork Princess (I also love Clockwork Prince heaps too), and my favourite of TMI is City of Glass, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire.
TMI would have to be my favourite, as much as I love TID. TMI was the first shadowhunter series I read and is why I fell in love with all the other books/wanted to keep reading more of Cassie's work! Clary and Jace's love has made my heart melt in so many ways and it's just the type of the story that you want to crawl inside or throw at a wall sometimes (ie. last page of cols).
I love them both so much but TID holds an extra special place in my heart<3 I love everything about it, and i am such a sucker for the characters in it. Even though it is set in the late 1800s, i relate to it more than tmi, and it never fails to make me happy !!!
I loved TMI but TID has something completely different and that made me love them more (TID made me cry... a lot), so, I'm going to say TID
TID has a lot more of character development and i totally loved reading about their emotions and struggles throughout the series; it also has a love triangle (Jace and Clary's love was epic, but I knew they would end up together anyways). I read TID after finishing TMI and it was amazing to discover the connections between certain events and characters (like Brother Zachariah; that part BLEW MA AWAY, although I kind of sensed what was going to happen)All in all, I think TID had a bigger impact on me, but given the lenght of TMI and that I had time to become really close to the characters, I keep a special place for it in my heart as well :D
Though I loved the characters from TID more, I'm gonna have to say TMI, because I thought the storyline from TID was weak. So it was actually good, that it had awesome characters and the storyline didn't take too much time, otherwise I probably wouldn't have liked it at all. But TID still gets credit for the first book I've liked that had more interesting friendships und relashionships than the actual storyline.
I love the mortal instruments and the infernal devices but i have to say the mortal instruments was a tad better.
TMI. Simply cause I love more of those characters. But that's probably cause there are more. Since their are five of them in TMI (6 count Magnus), and only 3 in Infernal Devices (and clockwork princess lacks one of the characters very much).
Favourite TMI: City of Fallen Angels because it made me laugh so hard.Favourite TID: Clockwork Princess, because it's simply one of the best conclusions ever made. (Excluding Star Wars' Return of the Jedi, of course :P)
