Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments Welcome Irmak, I'm looking forward to seeing what you read and reading your reviews. The main thing is to have fun and this is a fun group.

LOL you ain't seen nothing yet. I have given up on whittling down my TBR. This group has expanded my reading tremendously, and I joined in 2008 (I think). I have given up on keeping track of books I want to read, and am just enjoying the ride. I have, however, gotten better at keeping track of the books I have read, and reviewing them. Now I'm trying to do the same for my children but that's more difficult as they don't seem to have the same obsession with books that I did at their age (and still do).

Blueberry (blueberry1) I'm trying to figure out how PBT works. I know there are alot of posts telling me how but If I might repeat in my own words how I think this works?

1. I read books in the monthly tag category (ie. WWII) and then post a review under that monthly tag.

2. Anything else I read, I post a review under the Other books Tag.

3. Conversation goes under Footnotes?

4. If I read nonfiction, I post a review in Nonfiction under challenges. I post a goal and then number my entries leading to that goal.

5. Shelfagories...I think I have down. Shelfagories is the only shelf not requiring reviews? oh, nope...I see that I need a review for that also.

What's the minimum length for a review? I'm not very good at writing them. haha

message 104: by Jgrace (new)

Jgrace | 3959 comments Blueberry - there's a set list of 100 books on the PBT non-fiction list. If the book you read is on that list you can post it to the challenge, otherwise (or in addition if it fits more than one category) post it under the month tag or other books folder. It's great to 'see' you here!

message 105: by annapi (last edited Feb 27, 2016 02:02PM) (new)

annapi | 5505 comments Blueberry: When we are playing a game for prizes or points, I think the moderators usually want us to post at least 4 sentences in a review. They specify these in the rules before a game starts, so that might change depending on the game. Otherwise you can make it as short as you like.

For Shelfagories, there is a post for keeping track of our progress, and there you can link to your reviews, which can be posted to either the monthly tag or the other tags discussions as appropriate. Or you can put the reviews on the Shelfagories discussion as well if you want.

Generally speaking, when we look for reviews, we go to the 2 folders for the month, for the monthly tag and the other tags. For games and challenges, there are specific folders where we have to post so the mods can keep track. Conversations do go under Footnotes.

Blueberry (blueberry1) Thank you Jgrace and annapi. I think I have a better grasp of it now.

message 107: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11724 comments Blueberry, it looks like others have filled you in on pretty much how things work. I just thought I'd add where you would find that list of nonfiction books (these were voted on by our members at the beginning of this year).

If you click on "Bookshelf" at the top right of the group page. Then look at the list of shelves on the left and you'll see "pbt-100-nonfiction". Click that. That shows you our list of the "100 Nonfiction Books PBT Members Think You Should Read" (which is really what it comes down to).

The "pbt-100-fiction" was a challenge we did last year with the same theme: "100 Fiction Books PBT Members Think You Should Read"

In addition to the information you've already received, I think that as you participate things will become much more clear.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Hi, I just stumbled upon this group. Sounds fun! My last two books fall into the March category, so I have some recommendations! :) I live in Connecticut and I try to average 1 book per week. I read all types of books, popular fiction, some romance, mysteries, memoirs, fantasy, science-fiction, I switch a lot.

Welcome, Jennifer!! So glad you found us. It sounds like we have a similar reading pace, and if you read lots of genres already, that's perfect as we do all sorts of different reads here and our members like a wide array of books. Look forward to getting to know you!

Kathy Hi, I am Kathy from Georgia. I love the idea of picking a topic and then everyone can choose their own book. I hope this will allow me to whittle down my TBR pile but . . .

Welcome Kathy. I hope you enjoy the group. Unfortunately I think your TBR pile may grow by leaps and bounds. ;0)

message 125: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3525 comments Welcome Kathy! I agree with Linda - your TBR will definitely grow.

message 126: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9301 comments Welcome, Kathy!!! So pleased you found us . . .unfortunately, I can't say with a straight face that your TBR pile will be whittled. We are all trying to do that with absolutely minimal success.

message 127: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments Kathy wrote: ". I hope this will allow me to whittle down my TBR pile but . . ."

Ha! You have no idea how big that "but . . ." really is! I joined near the beginning of 2008 and the start of PBT and my TBR has done nothing but grow! That's amazing since I really do try hard to read only from my TBR. There are elves here who put new books on my TBR pile while I'm sleeping - there have to be! Welcome, I hope you enjoy this group as much as I do! Nice to have you on board. :-)

message 128: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I have been purusing the books reviewed this month and I see what you mean. Have added more than I will be able to read. What great suggestions everyone is reading though.

Welcome Kathy!

Here's how it goes with whittling down your TBR pile on Play Book Tag. For every book you read from your tbr, several more books end up being added as people write reviews. But this is a great group and it's great to have you here.

Welcome Kathy! Yeah, good luck with the TBR. Both my digital and physical TBR piles have expanded considerably and it's only been a month. This group is too good :D

Hi Everyone
I have yet to figure out the exact rules for the group, but I'll have time , as I think you must go by month for new book selections, so I can take some time to look around before April to get on track .
Welcome to all the Shelfari members. I hope you all get used to it here and will feel comfortable with the way GR works .
I used to drop in Shelfari from time to time . I've seen quite a few of your groups in here now .
I hope to meet some new book friends in here , and read some books that I may not otherwise have tried .

Welcome, Julie! Don't worry to much about rules, we will help guide you along - - just ask questions as they arise. Thank you for your warm welcome. We are definitely getting used to things here and there are many features to appreciate.

I can promise you that your hopes will come true here!

message 139: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3525 comments Welcome Julie! You will enjoy this group quite a bit, I think. And thanks for your welcome (that sounded weird) to GR.

message 140: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hi, Julie! I joined last month. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. They make you feel like you are part of the group from the beginning. There are also some fun challenges to enjoy. Check out the new baseball challenge that is being put together. Welcome aboard!

I just call it GR in here as it's easier to type out. :)
Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

message 144: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments Welcome Kathy and Julie! We're settling into GR quite well, thanks, and if you hang around the group you'll definitely make friends and find new books to read. But if you think you'll whittle down your TBR, think again...this group is terrible for increasing one's TBR! I've given up on mine. But you will definitely expand your reading!

message 148: by Flo (new)

Flo (daredeviling) | 239 comments Hi! I'm Flo and I'm from NYC. I've been reading a ton the past couple years to make up for lack of reading in college and such, but I thought it would be a fun challenge to join this group and see if I can get my TBR shelved books to fit the monthly challenge themes here. I haven't joined book groups on GR before because they had such specifically monthly book challenges and I wanted the freedom to choose what I wanted to read within the challenge and tackle my TBR and this group seems like the perfect place to do that! (And I definitely have quite a few books to go on my TBR for the April female author challenge!)

message 149: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9301 comments Hi Flo!!!

Welcome to Play Book Tag!!!

I'm so glad you think our format will work for you and that you have some good books that will fit the tag of "female author". We look forward to seeing what you will read!

Please don't hesitate to reach out to our administrators (I'm one!) or any of our very helpful members if you need any assistance.

We look forward to getting to know you.

p.s. My son just accepted an internship in NYC, and if you have any great tips on finding affordable summer housing, I'm all ears. Better yet, are there areas we should avoid for safety concerns? I'm a little shell shocked by the rents!

message 150: by Flo (new)

Flo (daredeviling) | 239 comments Thank you! I'm excited to get started soon! Though after looking at the first ten books on my list, I had fewer female authors than I thought. :P

My son just accepted an internship in NYC, and if you have any great tips on finding affordable summer housing, I'm all ears. Better yet, are there areas we should avoid for safety concerns? I'm a little shell shocked by the rents!

Congrats to him, especially since NYC internships are super competitive! I'd say to check Craig's List, since lots of people post sublets on there. Also check with postings from local colleges like Columbia and NYU because again, student sublets are a good way for summer interns to get (semi) affordable housing. Hopefully those options are good for you! And I don't know Queens or Brooklyn very well, but in Manhattan, I'd really just say upper Harlem (above 168th St-ish) and the Bronx are places that may have a little more crime, even though I understand that Manhattan may also be too expensive! But lower Harlem tends to have at least slightly more reasonable prices within Manhattan. Mostly. I hope that helps!
