So I started listening to this on my way to/from work tonight. I thought the prologue (flashback) was fine BUT there was the fight scene at the end between the two boys, where they are pushing the single bar and the single bullet around - no guns. Some yelling. And then people showed up and it said something like "they were drawn by the yelling and GUNSHOTS." Huh?
That is bugging me way more than it should. Does it say that in the print version?
I don't remember exactly, I'll have to check my kindle. I do remember being pretty underwhelmed the first part of this book, but it picks up pretty well
Yeah, that gunshot comment jarred me too, but I'm also doing the audio.
Contrary to Scott's comments though, I enjoyed this part, especially the prologue and Chapter 4 where Wayne is wandering around making trades. Did they say how old Wax was in the prologue? Either way, pretty young to have to kill someone.
The humor is still pretty bad though. I wish he'd stop trying.
I was pretty apprehensive coming into this book, because I found the last one a bit of a letdown, but so far so good.

During the fight in the prologue, Wax pushes on the pin of the bullet to fire at Forch. That's the gunshot.
I like the humour quite a bit. It just meshes with my sense of humour, I suppose. But to each their own.
Its better than the humor in the Reckoners books, but that sets the bar pretty low. I don't hate it, but it usually comes off as trying too hard to me.
I think Wayne is pretty funny - it works for me. (However, I didn't like the "humor" in Reckoners). My favorite part of this section was Wayne's travelling exchange.

I enjoyed the flashback quite a bit, helped understand some of Waxs motivations later in life. I believe his sister is 16 and he is a year younger.
