Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments Suggested break down of reading so that you can check in and let us know how you're going. The following breakdown is purely a suggestion and is therefore not set in stone.

Rather than putting dates for each section I've done it so that it takes into account that not everybody will necessarily have the book at the same time.

Week 1: 126 pages
Week 2: 126 pages
Week 3: 126 pages
Week 4: 126 pages
Week 5: 126 pages
Week 6: 126 pages
Week 7: 126 pages
Week 8: 125 pages

message 3: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Can anyone who has a physical book let me know what chapter/part markers are near to the suggested breakdown? I'm reading this one on Kindle, so it's hard to track pages.

I usually speed ahead with buddy reads because I have a hard time spreading a book out over time, but I'm going to try to stay on track with this one.

message 4: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments I will get the physical one hopefully in time, or if not I have the kindle version. I am insanely in mood for both Sanderson and Fantasy now, so I'm just superexited for this book!

message 5: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I can't wait! I've been meaning to read Sanderson for SUCH a long time.

message 6: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I'll probably mix kindle/audio - the audio has one of my favourite narrators, so I look forward to that!

message 7: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Which narrator is that Karina?

message 8: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Winter: Kate Reading! Her voice doesn't hurt my ears (and many other audio narrator voices do, unfortunately).

Ah she's the one for Wheel of Time too right ? She's good if it is who I'm thinking of. My favorite narrator is Simon Vance. He has narrated some classics, Kushiel's Imriel series and Tigana. There's a lot of narrators I just can't stand.

Seconding this request.

(Also, just realizing how long it's been since I tackled anything high fantasy. Used to read a lot of it... not so much recently).

message 11: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments I am horrible! I have it on kindle, but I bought half of the first book now to have it in the gorgeous paperback edition lol. I can tell as soon as it gets here!

message 12: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Thanks Winter! I figure I can do 12% chunks on my Kindle, but having chapters or something to go by would be much easier.

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Cassandra wrote: "Thanks Winter! I figure I can do 12% chunks on my Kindle, but having chapters or something to go by would be much easier."

The version I get is two paperbacks, so I will only get the first half now, but I will let you know :)

message 14: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments That's fine! I'm hoping to stay "on track" and only read the first half this month anyway. :)

Me too, let's see how that goes ;)

message 16: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 199 comments The MMP has more pages than the suggested breakdown. But on average if you keep the 126 pages that is roughly 7 chapters a week. For a total of about 10 weeks.

Hope that helps. If you want I can do a proper breakdown.

message 17: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Cassandra: The book finally arrived. Mine is laid out like this:

Week 1: 126 pages - up to 8
Week 2: 126 pages - 8-15 (up to 16)
Week 3: 126 pages - 16-23 (up to 24)
Week 4: 126 pages - 24-36 (up to 37)
Week 5: 126 pages
Week 6: 126 pages
Week 7: 126 pages
Week 8: 125 pages

message 18: by Samantha (AK) (new)

Samantha (AK) (samantha_ak) Thank you, Winter!

message 19: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Fantastic! Thank you, Winter. :)

I just started reading this morning and I'm just a few pages in. Like most epic fantasy, Sanderson just starts throwing around terms (which I'm fine with), but when it gets to the first fight scene... I'm hooked! I just kept thinking to myself "Holy magic system, Batman!" I'm a sucker for interesting magic in books.

I'm excited to finish reading the first week's chunk and will post more thoughts then. :)

message 20: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I thought I was having a bad time following the audio when I started this one, then remembered it's a chunky epic fantasy, and I'm supposed to feel lost and confused in the barrage of names and concepts for at least the first 10% of it. :p

This is planned to be a ten books series I think ? When starting a new series like that I always assume that the first book will be more like an introduction sort of.

message 22: by Samantha (AK) (new)

Samantha (AK) (samantha_ak) It's not the infodump that's been bothering me..., it's the repetition in the writing. How many times can we use the word "Shardblade" in a given paragraph? >.>'

And then... (Chapter 4): (view spoiler)

But 1.) I'm an overly critical person, and 2.) This is my first Sanderson book. *shrug* I've got plenty of pages ahead to get over it. :P

The dialogue's snappy, anyway.

Thank you Kara! :)

message 25: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Looks like 3 or 4th week in February will be the week I start this :)

message 26: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I read up through chapter seven and I'm still a big fan. I'm enjoying the different storylines and slowly learning about the different kinds of magic in this world. I'm interested to see when (or if) the multiple storylines come together.

I'm really looking forward to it. I think it will be a great series. I just need to finish the upcoming read-a-thon and then I'm ready to jump in and read!

message 28: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Ooh. I really enjoy reading this - will probably speed ahead of the group schedule. It's just... extremely more-ish. I feel pretty smart about stocking up all those Sanderson titles on various sales now, even though it took me a while to start on them. :p

message 29: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Lol I'm stocking them too ^^ I have read Elantris some years ago and liked it a lot. I'm hoping to start this next week, I'm so ready to jump into a Sanderson world again!

message 30: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I had a hard time stopping after the first chunk, but my ambitious reading schedule for this month will keep me from devouring the whole thing. No promises for next month, though, especially as I get more into the story!

How far are you, Karina? What do you like most?

message 31: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments This week Game of Thrones got all focus because it's blue, but I'm so looking forward to this! I'm also on an overly ambitious reading schedule lol. Trying to finish some this week.

message 32: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments No worries, Winter! Those are two big books to read at once.

message 33: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments Mm they are, I don't know if I will finish Game of Thrones first, but I might to get it more orderly :) they both go through February. I were in mood for both..

message 34: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Wah, I've neglected my buddy read threads due to seasonal flu-knockout. Sorry!

I expect to finish this tonight or tomorrow, though. My favourite part of the whole thing is the various types of spren! So intriguing.

message 35: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments I haven't even begun ^^ Decided to finish A Game of Thrones and read this in March. Looking forward to it, in such a fantasy and Sanderson mood right now!

message 36: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I really like the spren too, Karina. It just makes the world feel magical and exciting.

I'm still sitting at 25% of the way through the book. I hope to get to 50% by the end of the month and will finish next month. :)

message 37: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I'm at the 50% mark now, just finished chapter 33. I'm still fascinated by the main storylines, and the small vignettes about Szeth, the Purelake, and the spren researcher are promising as well.

I'm still in awe of this world - it feels so magical and real at the same time. I'm glad that I'm spreading this out over two months, because I'll be sad when I'm done with it.

I feel like I read up to a tipping point, because it seems like everything is going to start to come together in the second half of the book.

message 38: by Justin (new)

Justin (jbradley86) im really behind at the minute struggled to get into it at first a couple hundred pages in now and its really starting to grab hold now really enjoying it so far. I agree with you Cassandra loving the spren such a brill idea of fairy like beings related to emotion. the one with kaladin especially makes me smile

message 39: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I want to know more about Syl! I can't quite remember when this becomes apparent, so don't read the following until after you notice something odd with Kal and spheres:
(view spoiler)

message 40: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5003 comments I finally decided to postpone this read. I got behind on some books and A Game of Thrones took me much longer than expected. I want to be able to immerse myself in the world when I read it without stressing about the ten other books I need to read for Q1 challenges and read-a-thons, so I'm backing out of the buddy read but still very much planning to read this! I know I will enjoy it when I do!

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments Hi Winter,

I have taken you off the list.

message 42: by Samantha (AK) (new)

Samantha (AK) (samantha_ak) Hey, guys. I, too, am going to have to postpone this read. It's enjoyable, but a little much with my life as it is, right now. :/

message 43: by Zara's Retreat (new)

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments I have taken you off the list Samantha. I can understand your reasons.

message 44: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments No problem, Samantha! Take care. :)

message 45: by Cassandra (last edited Mar 17, 2016 11:33AM) (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I finally finished this one! I'm in love. For a long book, it raises as many questions as it answers, but I really enjoyed reading it. I'm looking forward to the second book, but I also want to postpone it a bit because I know I'll be sad when I finish it.

Karina, are you the only other person who has finished?
