Where should I start with Tess Gerritsen?

Hi,
I'm looking to get into Tess Gerritsen's books. I'm looking for a "gateway" read - one of her better books that will make me want to read more books by her. Where should I start? With The Surgeon? With the latest Rizzoli/Iles book? Maybe one of her better-reviewed stand-alones (Bone Garden or Playing with Fire)?

I would think if you are reading Rizzoli/Isles it is good to start at the beginning. She has a number of standalones also.

From experience I found that some series' first books are not as good as later entries, so I was worried the first book would put me off. Is it not the case here? Would you say The Surgeon is one of her better books?

There are plot elements that carry through in the series, so I recommend starting with The Surgeon

I just always think it is best to start at the beginning. That way you follow character development in addition to following the writer as he/she develops.
