❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Hello Team, Little bit about myself.
I'm 24 and I live in Sydney Australia, I love to read and talk about books, my main fav genres that I love are MM, Romance, Contemporary, Paranormal and sometime Contemporary Western. I love to talk if everyone else is in chatty mood but will go quiet if everyone else does.

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments Greets Stephanie and the rest of the crew!

I'm excited to get to know you all through your reading habits and chit chat.

I'm a huge non-fiction (mostly science and history) and fantasy reader. Audiobooks are how I get through the work nights, but I also love curling up to a real book or my kindle.

message 6: by Plethora (last edited Jan 27, 2016 12:16AM) (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments I love non-fiction history as well, but I haven't spent much time with it lately. I haven't had the mind clarity/awakeness for it. I like to be able to concentrate on it.

Last year was a slow reading year for me, so far this month has been going well, so hope to keep up the pace.

I have no idea what to toss out for name ideas.

So we begin our journey on the San Andreas Island. No books or authors come to mind here. Anyone have any ideas yet?

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments I'm not good at picking names, so I have nothing.
I haven't got anything books that would work for San Andres Island for location or Authors.

message 8: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments The island is part of Columbia, so wouldn't that be what we wanted? I don't have anything for Columbia either, but just wanted to make sure I'm clear.

If we go with country/city, does each member of the team have to read a book set there or just a certain number?

If we go with spell-it-out, can we pick between spelling San Andres Island or Columbia?

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is San Andres Island, Colombia.

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Colombia, or by Colombian authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of San Andres Island or Colombia

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book where characters get on a plane"

message 10: by Plethora (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments Ok, it helps that we get all of Columbia and not just the small island.

Famous author Gabriel García Márquez.

We get more points if 6 of us complete the task.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Do we get the same amount of points if we do the spell-it-out option?

message 12: by Plethora (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments ❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Sherlock Holmesღ♥ღ wrote: "Do we get the same amount of points if we do the spell-it-out option?"

I read it that which ever of the task we pick well earn a minimum of 10 points, we just get bonus points if 6 or more of us complete the task.
-========
Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments So if we complete the task and everyone contributes we get 35 points total. That's good.

Yes. I'm off for my few hours of sleep. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so completely different time zone from you. (My daughter loved her visit to Australia.) And my alarm clock goes off in four hours for work.

I'm thinking we may want to use the spell-it-out task here, but we will see what our traveling companions think.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Okay, goodnight.

I think the spell-it-out is the best way to go, but we will see everyone else thinks.

message 16: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments I'm good with any option, and will find something to fit about any task we decide to go for. :)

message 17: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments Here are options for the Detours. We need to do choose five of them to get maximum points if that's what we want to do. :)

Detours:
Read a book where characters get on a plane
Read a book which has the main location (setting) as Australia or New Zealand
Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Urban Fantasy
Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Paranormal
Read a book with a sad good-bye scene or angsty fight.
Read a book with a zombie
Read a book that contains the word peas
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as death - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable

What are the easiest ones for everyone?

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Well the to easiest ones would have to be the Urban Fantasy and Paranormal, probably the plane one also. I have a couple that are set in Australia to.

The hardest ones for me would have to be the Zombie one because I don't read books with that or the death on.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments I finished my first book, it will only work for the Spell-it-out option otherwise it can be used later on in the challenge.

Are we just posting them on here and that's it or are we going to make shelves for our books?

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi. Checking in. I personally don't have any books set in Colombia, so I vote to do the spell-it out.

message 21: by Plethora (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments I glanced at some of the books I had already planned for starting in February and none had the gene or top shelves needed.

I don't read a ton of paranormal, I'd have to research the Urban Fantasy, but I'm not sure that I read much in that category either. I'm not a fan of zombies, which probably covers both those categories.

Many books have death in them, just finding one that has it shelled would be the trick. Sad good-byes or plane ride are probably easier followed by weird pea and location option of Australia or New Zealand.

message 22: by Zeni (new)

Zeni Taubl | 308 comments Hi team! I'm excited as this is my first time joining a team challenge. Most of the time I use the phone app, but if I need to add a book or author I will go on the computer. I'm from South Carolina so normally I get up about this time. I'm up to read any genre.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a name yet? And if we were to do the spell it out would we each just get a letter? And are we able to pick a detour or are we obligated to do the first one?

message 23: by Plethora (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments We can pick a detour, we can do five detours this trip.

Armchair Travelers
Timid Travelers
Wandering Reviewers
Cultivated Excursionist

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments I really like Wandering Reviewers, Armchair Travelers is a really good one also.

message 25: by Zeni (new)

Zeni Taubl | 308 comments I second Armchair Travelers.

message 26: by Zeni (new)

Zeni Taubl | 308 comments I did some research and I found some other books that take place in Colombia.

Even Silence Has an End My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle by Ingrid Betancourt
The Angel of Galilea by Laura Restrepo
The Girl With No Name The Incredible True Story of a Child Raised by Monkeys by Marina Chapman
The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vásquez
The Reunion Mission \ Tall Dark Defender by Beth Cornelison
Bogotá A Novel by Alan Grostephan

Kate S | 1998 comments Hello Team! Excited to get another team challenge started.

I am Kate, I live on the East Coast of the USA. I am an avid reader of books. I like literary fiction, but also read mysteries, historical fiction, some science fiction, biographies, non-fiction history and current events. I love to try different genres and use these challenges to expand my horizons.

My preference for detours are:

1. Setting is Australia
2. Shelved as death
3. Characters get on a plane
4. Sad good-bye scene
5. Zombie
6. Paranormal
7. Peas
8. Urban Fantasy

I agree we should use the maximum of these to get the most points, but we all need to agree to read a book which fits.

I am pretty flexible in my reading. As long as I can get a book from my library which fits, I will read whatever is needed for the team.

message 30: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 1998 comments Not being well-versed in the country codes, I thought a list of our stops may help:

Columbia
Chile
Portugal
Oman
Russia
Japan
New Zealand
Mexico

I like reading books set in different places, but I think a couple of these may be difficult to find.

message 31: by Zeni (new)

Zeni Taubl | 308 comments I looked up the Shelved as Death one to see if I had anything that fit and the first thing I saw was All the Bright Places which is also a BOM this month, so maybe we could use that detour when it comes around.

Have we decided whether we are doing Colombia or a detour? I feel like Colombia is a pretty easy one, so I would vote for that and save our 5 detours. Especially since if we wanted to do the spell it out instead of place, Colombia has exactly 8 letters, so we could do a letter per person.

Michelle | 3553 comments Hi everyone..Sorry I'm late. I was sick all day yesterday. I'm Michelle..I read a variety of genres. My favorites are YA, Horror/Zombie/Dystopian.

I like the name of armchair travelers.

If no one has decided yet on which preference I would like to throw a vote out there for spelling out Columbia.

Most of the books I read are usually set in the US or the UK. I read very little in where the setting is another country.

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments *waves to the rest of the team checking in*

It looks like many of us are happy with the plane one. That's actually our first detour for San Andres Island, Colombia. I vote that our first stop is a detour and we work on "character gets on a plane" instead of location/author or spell it out.

I just asked right now if we were able to get permission to edit our travel spreadsheet. That would make it easier to organize and keep track of books, stops, and detours.

I am working on a book right now that would work for the plane detour too.

Happy with Armchair Travelers too (or anything really) :) Thanks for jumping in and making suggestions Bookworm. Do you have a preference for what we call you btw?

message 34: by Plethora (new)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments I'm on phone, but I though we would need to do five different task? Not that all five of us do the same one?

Looks like Armchair Travelers is well liked, that works fine for me.

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Should I change you to Armchair Travelers then?

From what I gather is that each detour is already assigned to each location.

First stop is:
A: Setting in Columbia or author from Columbia
B: Spell out Columbia or San Andres Island
C: Read a book where characters get on a plane (at least 4 of us)

Second stop is:
A: Setting in Chile or author from Chile
B: Spell out Chile or Punta Arenas
C: Read a book with main setting in Australia or New Zealand (at least 4 of us)

Third stop is:
A: Setting in Portugal or author from Portugal
B: Spell out Madeira or Portugal
C: Read a book with main page genre Urban Fantasy

Fourth stop is:
A: Setting in Oman or author from Oman
B: Spell out Muscat or Oman
C: Read a book with main page genre Paranormal

Fifth stop is:
A: Setting in Russia or author from Russia
B: Spell out Tomsk or Russia
C: Read a book with a sad goob-bye or angsty fight

Sixth stop is:
A: Setting in Japan or author from Japan
B: Spell out Kagoshima or Japan
C: Read a book with a zombie

Seventh stop is:
A: Setting in New Zealand or author from New Zealand
B: Spell out Wellington or New Zealand
C: Read a book that contains the word peas

Eighth stop is:
A: Setting in Mexico or author from Mexico
B: Spell out San Jose del Cabo or Mexico
C: Read a book shelved on 1st page as "death"

message 38: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 937 comments We can read books ahead of time and save them too. Once we can edit our spreadsheet, it will make it easier to keep track of books and such.

I do think we should aim for our first stop to be a detour. Characters getting on a plane seems like an easy one. Only 4 of us have to finish a book with the plane to move on, but we get extra points if all us finish a book with the plane before we go to next stop.

DETOURS
◈ Requires at least 4 members to complete the detour goal before it's considered complete.
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

message 39: by Zeni (new)

Zeni Taubl | 308 comments Ok so if we can only do 5 detours maybe we should pick out which ones we would want to detour. I can see Japan and Russia being easy so I wouldn't necessarily want to detour those two. Neither of the 3 books I have checked out from the library deal with planes either, so my vote is with not doing a detour this one.

We don't all have to read a book for each detour. We only need 4 of the team to read for each detour to move on. We can even plan ahead, and those that wanted to skip a detour or location can plan ahead and start reading for the next stop. :)

I think we just need to pick the five easiest detours since spell it outs are so simple to finish. For me though, I'm super flexible with my reading as long at it isn't romance or most YA, so there really isn't a task I can't get through. Even romance - I can always find a classic that I'd enjoy.

I'm super flexible, so whatever everyone else picks I can find something for it. :)

message 41: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (deja05) | 732 comments Hi all!

I just got back from work and am checking in for the first time. I mostly read fantasy, YA, mystery and romance books. I'm currently reading Spotless which has characters getting on a plane. I mostly read e-books so it's not too hard for me to find books for different goals.

When I finish a book should I post it to this thread?

message 42: by Plethora (last edited Jan 27, 2016 07:36PM) (new)

No idea how to do the auto load thing. :(

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments I'm good with google spreedsheet, but that's one thing I don't know how to do.

Okay, if we go with the plane detour I finished a book yesterday after the challenge started that had a character who went on a plane.

So when we finish a book even if it doesn't count for the first week do we post it on here anyway?

I just played with a tracking page a bit. Please work on it to make it look better and make more sense please!

I am working on a book right now that has a plane ride also btw, so we can do that if we have others that can/want to read a book for the first detour.

Going to make my own tab to store my read books that aren't used yet that we can use for future stops.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Okay when we first got assigned a team, I decided to make my own tracking sheet for myself, this is the link if you want to have a look
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
What is it you want, because if it was me I would probably have a different sheet for each week and then one sheet for all books that haven't been used.

Doesn't bother me what it looks like as long as it works. :) Yours is much prettier than what I've put together so far on our sheet. Please move things around as you see fit.

You can even move your private one over to our spreadsheet in a new tab. I've already made my own there called "Daphne's Luggage" that I'm going to use to keep track of my unused books.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Okay well I like how you put all the completed stuff that you have up the top, I would probably have to itinerary and detours next to that then have the travelers under that, I should be able to link the points up to the top if it's all on one page.

❤Stephanie ღ♥ღMrs Daryl Dixonღ♥ღ | 2613 comments Daphne, what is the traveler's part for that you have in pink? what is it used for is it just to say that they completed a book in that week or something? I'm not sure what to do with it.
