When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)
First stop - San Andreas Island (Colombia)

I'm 24 and I live in Sydney Australia, I love to read and talk about books, my main fav genres that I love are MM, Romance, Contemporary, Paranormal and sometime Contemporary Western. I love to talk if everyone else is in chatty mood but will go quiet if everyone else does.

I'm excited to get to know you all through your reading habits and chit chat.
I'm a huge non-fiction (mostly science and history) and fantasy reader. Audiobooks are how I get through the work nights, but I also love curling up to a real book or my kindle.

Last year was a slow reading year for me, so far this month has been going well, so hope to keep up the pace.
I have no idea what to toss out for name ideas.
So we begin our journey on the San Andreas Island. No books or authors come to mind here. Anyone have any ideas yet?

I haven't got anything books that would work for San Andres Island for location or Authors.

If we go with country/city, does each member of the team have to read a book set there or just a certain number?
If we go with spell-it-out, can we pick between spelling San Andres Island or Columbia?

Your first stop is San Andres Island, Colombia.
You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Colombia, or by Colombian authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of San Andres Island or Colombia
OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book where characters get on a plane"

Famous author Gabriel García Márquez.
We get more points if 6 of us complete the task.

I read it that which ever of the task we pick well earn a minimum of 10 points, we just get bonus points if 6 or more of us complete the task.
-========
Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

Yes. I'm off for my few hours of sleep. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so completely different time zone from you. (My daughter loved her visit to Australia.) And my alarm clock goes off in four hours for work.
I'm thinking we may want to use the spell-it-out task here, but we will see what our traveling companions think.

I think the spell-it-out is the best way to go, but we will see everyone else thinks.

Detours:
Read a book where characters get on a plane
Read a book which has the main location (setting) as Australia or New Zealand
Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Urban Fantasy
Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Paranormal
Read a book with a sad good-bye scene or angsty fight.
Read a book with a zombie
Read a book that contains the word peas
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as death - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable
What are the easiest ones for everyone?

The hardest ones for me would have to be the Zombie one because I don't read books with that or the death on.

Are we just posting them on here and that's it or are we going to make shelves for our books?
Hi. Checking in. I personally don't have any books set in Colombia, so I vote to do the spell-it out.

I don't read a ton of paranormal, I'd have to research the Urban Fantasy, but I'm not sure that I read much in that category either. I'm not a fan of zombies, which probably covers both those categories.
Many books have death in them, just finding one that has it shelled would be the trick. Sad good-byes or plane ride are probably easier followed by weird pea and location option of Australia or New Zealand.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a name yet? And if we were to do the spell it out would we each just get a letter? And are we able to pick a detour or are we obligated to do the first one?

I am Kate, I live on the East Coast of the USA. I am an avid reader of books. I like literary fiction, but also read mysteries, historical fiction, some science fiction, biographies, non-fiction history and current events. I love to try different genres and use these challenges to expand my horizons.

Detours:
Read a book where characters get on a plane
Read a book which ha..."
My preference for detours are:
1. Setting is Australia
2. Shelved as death
3. Characters get on a plane
4. Sad good-bye scene
5. Zombie
6. Paranormal
7. Peas
8. Urban Fantasy
I agree we should use the maximum of these to get the most points, but we all need to agree to read a book which fits.
I am pretty flexible in my reading. As long as I can get a book from my library which fits, I will read whatever is needed for the team.

Columbia
Chile
Portugal
Oman
Russia
Japan
New Zealand
Mexico
I like reading books set in different places, but I think a couple of these may be difficult to find.

Have we decided whether we are doing Colombia or a detour? I feel like Colombia is a pretty easy one, so I would vote for that and save our 5 detours. Especially since if we wanted to do the spell it out instead of place, Colombia has exactly 8 letters, so we could do a letter per person.

I like the name of armchair travelers.
If no one has decided yet on which preference I would like to throw a vote out there for spelling out Columbia.
Most of the books I read are usually set in the US or the UK. I read very little in where the setting is another country.

It looks like many of us are happy with the plane one. That's actually our first detour for San Andres Island, Colombia. I vote that our first stop is a detour and we work on "character gets on a plane" instead of location/author or spell it out.
I just asked right now if we were able to get permission to edit our travel spreadsheet. That would make it easier to organize and keep track of books, stops, and detours.
I am working on a book right now that would work for the plane detour too.
Happy with Armchair Travelers too (or anything really) :) Thanks for jumping in and making suggestions Bookworm. Do you have a preference for what we call you btw?

Looks like Armchair Travelers is well liked, that works fine for me.

Works for me. Team 1 seems so formal. :)

From what I gather is that each detour is already assigned to each location.
First stop is:
A: Setting in Columbia or author from Columbia
B: Spell out Columbia or San Andres Island
C: Read a book where characters get on a plane (at least 4 of us)
Second stop is:
A: Setting in Chile or author from Chile
B: Spell out Chile or Punta Arenas
C: Read a book with main setting in Australia or New Zealand (at least 4 of us)
Third stop is:
A: Setting in Portugal or author from Portugal
B: Spell out Madeira or Portugal
C: Read a book with main page genre Urban Fantasy
Fourth stop is:
A: Setting in Oman or author from Oman
B: Spell out Muscat or Oman
C: Read a book with main page genre Paranormal
Fifth stop is:
A: Setting in Russia or author from Russia
B: Spell out Tomsk or Russia
C: Read a book with a sad goob-bye or angsty fight
Sixth stop is:
A: Setting in Japan or author from Japan
B: Spell out Kagoshima or Japan
C: Read a book with a zombie
Seventh stop is:
A: Setting in New Zealand or author from New Zealand
B: Spell out Wellington or New Zealand
C: Read a book that contains the word peas
Eighth stop is:
A: Setting in Mexico or author from Mexico
B: Spell out San Jose del Cabo or Mexico
C: Read a book shelved on 1st page as "death"

I do think we should aim for our first stop to be a detour. Characters getting on a plane seems like an easy one. Only 4 of us have to finish a book with the plane to move on, but we get extra points if all us finish a book with the plane before we go to next stop.
DETOURS
◈ Requires at least 4 members to complete the detour goal before it's considered complete.
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

We don't all have to read a book for each detour. We only need 4 of the team to read for each detour to move on. We can even plan ahead, and those that wanted to skip a detour or location can plan ahead and start reading for the next stop. :)
I think we just need to pick the five easiest detours since spell it outs are so simple to finish. For me though, I'm super flexible with my reading as long at it isn't romance or most YA, so there really isn't a task I can't get through. Even romance - I can always find a classic that I'd enjoy.
I'm super flexible, so whatever everyone else picks I can find something for it. :)

I just got back from work and am checking in for the first time. I mostly read fantasy, YA, mystery and romance books. I'm currently reading Spotless which has characters getting on a plane. I mostly read e-books so it's not too hard for me to find books for different goals.
When I finish a book should I post it to this thread?

No idea how to do the auto load thing. :(

Okay, if we go with the plane detour I finished a book yesterday after the challenge started that had a character who went on a plane.
So when we finish a book even if it doesn't count for the first week do we post it on here anyway?

I just played with a tracking page a bit. Please work on it to make it look better and make more sense please!
I am working on a book right now that has a plane ride also btw, so we can do that if we have others that can/want to read a book for the first detour.
Going to make my own tab to store my read books that aren't used yet that we can use for future stops.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
What is it you want, because if it was me I would probably have a different sheet for each week and then one sheet for all books that haven't been used.

Doesn't bother me what it looks like as long as it works. :) Yours is much prettier than what I've put together so far on our sheet. Please move things around as you see fit.
You can even move your private one over to our spreadsheet in a new tab. I've already made my own there called "Daphne's Luggage" that I'm going to use to keep track of my unused books.
