Jennifer | 236 comments Too many half done projects including part read books. Inspired by other people shelf cleaning.

I had no clue that this was based on real people when I downloaded the audiobook to my phone. Ernest Hemingway seems to be a complete ass. Never read any of his books and now I'm curious.

Will always remind me of going for runs in the field behind my office at lunch.

Jennifer | 236 comments The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Dec 2015

Listened to the audiobook. Feel asleep a lot. Needed to renew hold from library frequently.

Thought I would enjoy it more than I did. Maybe I would have if I had read it in a less choppy way.

Jennifer | 236 comments The Toyota Way to Healthcare Excellence Increase Efficiency and Improve Quality with Lean (ACHE Management) by John R. Black Jan 2016

Like a big promo pamphlet for why you should hire JBA. Only one in my department who hasn't been sent to detailed Lean training. Strange since I had asked about these concepts years ago. But that is disgruntled digression and I'm trying to work in reducing those this year too.

Thought I'd better read it to keep up with the latest jargon.
Didn't give me any real tools.

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments The Second Son by Charles Sailor a good book about a sweet man until the author gets you hooked and then it's a pushy religious message shoved down your throat. Skipped the middle.

Jennifer | 236 comments Jan 2016 The Gate Thief (Mither Mages, #2) by Orson Scott Card

Jennifer | 236 comments Feb 2016 The Plague Tales (The Plague Tales, #1) by Ann Benson

I asked for a recommendation on a book set during the plague. I received this exactly 3 years before I finished it!

Jennifer | 236 comments Feb 2016 Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain enjoyed it once I decided to finish it. Not sure why it took so long.

I read this recently, too. Good, isn't it?

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments It was but I should have read in instead of audiobook as I'm already forgetting it.

Jennifer | 236 comments April 2016 Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Loved the twists. Easy read. Thanks hubby for this bedtime story.

message 14: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments I saw the movie Gone Girl, but didn't read it. Doogie Howser is evil now!

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Doogie Howser cannot be cast as Nick as my mental Nick has dark hair

Scarlett Avery (scarlettavery) | 46 comments Evelyn wrote: "I saw the movie Gone Girl, but didn't read it. Doogie Howser is evil now!"

I saw the movie, too. It was good.

message 17: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Spot on! Ben Affleck played Nick. Neil Patrick Harris was Desi

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Oh that is good casting.

message 19: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Two thumbs up : )

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Andrew and I bought each other the movie for Christmas. Returned a copy and still have yet to see it.

Jennifer | 236 comments April 2016 The Nightingale worth getting past the slow beginning. This is an amazing book set in WW2. I had been so sick of this setting that it was hard to give this book a chance. Now I highly recommend.

Yeah I've read so many WWII books I'm now always a bit hesitant to pick them up - but this one does sound good and has had rave reviews. Will keep an eye out for it at the library.

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Erica the audio version out library had was lovely too. I was only listening to it running for the first few sign outs and then I listened to the book when driving and instead of sleeping by the end.

message 29: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 1529 comments Have read quite a few non fiction about WWII and also have loved some of the TV series, e.g. Home Fires which is based on the non fiction book Jambusters (but just inspired by really; the characters are all invented for Home Fires).

Have you read Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden . I just recommended it for a book swap

message 31: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 1529 comments Thanks Jennifer, no haven't read that one. I've just managed to get Jambusters from the library so that will be the next WWII non fiction that I get to. Trying not to add books at present as I have so many TBR mainly paper ones and I am trying to declutter ;-)

Jennifer | 236 comments Pam wrote: "Thanks Jennifer, no haven't read that one. I've just Trying not to add books at present as I have..."

Totally relate. I've added some and then by the time I get to them, I can't think why on earth I added them to my tbr list.

message 33: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Frog Music by Emma Donoghue May 2016

Did end up enjoying this when I went back to it. Recommend the audiobook as it has the music and flaws other reviewers mention aren't as evident.

Jennifer, what did you make of Amy? - she was psycho but the idea that she simply played roles all her life without ever really knowing who she really was. And the ending? I think, on 7th anniversary, she'll kill Nick and pretend that Desi Collings' mother did it as revenge (!) The way the story ended it sounded like she didn't like what Nick said and would teach him a lesson. I hope the book has a sequel! Go and Boney try to bring her down kind of thing!

Lots that I never thought about buy you're right, they did seem to set up for a sequel.

Jennifer | 236 comments June 2016 The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway

The first part made me feel fear. How fragile is the normal life as

Wonderful book about society, war, fear and the decisions we made.

Jennifer | 236 comments Anna Karenina
July 2016 after over 3 years I just started letting the audiobook run. Is that a toss or a finish? A little of both.

i guess I'm done as the audiobook stopped playing!?! i an ready to watch the movie to figure out what i heard. i don't think you should read this as an audiobook before bed. realky enjoyed the sections i listened to while on the highway driving (glad I didn't sleep in those parts). Left me wondering what the hype is.

message 38: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Hmmm, I haven't tackled this one yet - audiobooks put me to sleep, so when I do get to it, it will have to be paper

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments July 2016 The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood

Not sure why it left me wanting something more (different). This is the ending that had to happen. Why are these characters so 2 dimensional?

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Mither mages series Gatefather

Loved the concept but the man has no clue about teens anymore and should stop writing from that perspective.

message 41: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments At the Water's Edge after over a year, I'm glad u went back to this book.

Once I'd had a break from reading WWII books, this was enjoyable. I've heard it called a mix of Great Gatsby and Highlander. It reminded me of The Paris Wife and Highlander with an attempt at Nightingale.

It's not as good at Nightingale at presenting WWII. At first the distance works as the characters really live in their own little world but as the book progresses the bits about the war come out of no where.

The narrater had a strange anxious reading style.

After my stretch of so-so books, I'm tempted to rate it a 4 but it really is a 3-3.5

message 42: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments There are rather a lot of WW II books out there

I was thinking the same thing and would love to recommend some of the classics like Ender's Game, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale or 1984 to some of these kids.

message 46: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 1529 comments Also old YA dystopia such as Robert O'Brien's Z for Zachariah

message 47: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 236 comments Not bad... Mostly one a month and then I got on to other things so I still have a few to open and decide if a read or toss. There are
8 books that I added between 2014 and Nov 2016 and started but haven't finished. I will repeat this challenge.
