Frances Richardson | 139 comments Welcome, Manny. You bring so much to a group.

Hi, Peter. I hope everyone gets a chance to read the article “The Loss of Spiritual Herd Immunity” in the CatholicStand you provided. It’s brilliant. Thank you for SacredWindows, too. The illustrations and quotations are deep and beautiful.

Welcome to Mark and Dominic as well. I think John speaks for us all in his message 203 above.

Hi Manny,

Welcome. I know you not just from Catholic Thought, but I think we've run across each other on the internet as well - perhaps on Ricochet. In any case, I understand exactly what you mean by the difficulty of reading for too many book clubs - I had to stop participating there for exactly that reason. I hope you are able to find the time to join us for the discussion in February.

You’re on Ricochet John? Yes that is me. Send me a PM either here or Ricochet to let me know who you are there. I should have time this month for Brede. I’m looking forward to it.

Frances Richardson | 139 comments “The Loss of Spiritual Herd Immunity” is an important article, Peter. I’m so glad you shared it with us. I hope everyone gets a chance to read it. We are living in that moment now. The article explains so much.

Frances Richardson | 139 comments Thinking of In This House of Brede I remembered a book I read a long time ago. Exile Ends in Glory is a biography written by Thomas Merton, the life of Mother Mary Berchmans, O.C.S.O. In telling the story of the French Cistercian nun who became the foundress of the first house of the Order in Japan, Merton illuminated the stages of the interior life clearly, deftly, beautifully. I don’t know if the book is available any more, but if anyone finds it, it is a real treasure. All these years later, I haven’t forgotten the authenticity of Mother Berchman’s commitment, nor Merton’s depiction of it.

Hello Mrs. Elisabetta it is a big honor that you were a member of Catholic Book Club, although Mrs. Elisabetta had not said she wrote excellent books about the situation of the Catholics during the Tudor period time (unfortunatelly i think that her books only are in Italian and i would like to read them). I knew to Mrs. Sala thanks to the Maria Elvira Roca Barea`s book Hispanophobia and black Legend.

In this case there is only a mistake with the article, but it is not bad the right sentence it would be "Es una frase muy corta" the spanish is more difficult than the English language but the spanish people the Professor Alfonseca is an exception we are not very good learning foreign languages :-(.

As I hit send I wondered if perhaps frase wasn't feminine. I think many if not most nouns ending with e are feminine, right? And of course, as it is feminine it requires una/corta. This is one of my most common mistake in Spanish. I had forgotten the Spanish word for sentence, so I looked it up in a dictionary - I just double-checked and the dictionary (Spanish-English//English-Spanish) does not tell me the gender of the word, but if I look up frase it does tell me that it is a feminine noun.

message 222: by Fonch (new)

Fonch | 2464 comments Yes the gender is really important in Spain. I thougght that it would be more difficult the Subjuntive modal verb. I have nightmares with a lot of english grammars overall with the phrasal verbs 😱.

Jonathan Brown | 1 comments Hello, everybody! Got an invite from Fonch, so decided to join the group. I'm another non-Catholic member - an Evangelical pastor, actually - but love learning from Catholic tradition. (Preaching currently through the Apostles' Creed and finding St. Thomas Aquinas' Expositio in Symbolum Apostolorum and the Catechism to be two of the more helpful resources.) The Church Fathers and medieval chroniclers tend to be my favorite readings. My reading load for sermon research tends to be pretty high, so I can't always fit as much alongside it as I'd like, but it's good when I can!

Jill A. | 904 comments As a Wheaton College graduate who was gradually drawn in a more liturgically-rich direction and came into the Catholic Church via the charismatic renewal (where people talked about Jesus like my Baptist friends but had this spirituality/devotion I'd been taught was idol-worship!!), sounds like you are on a path to becoming a "fallen-away evangelical" by way of the Church Fathers. We are legion! God bless you!

Welcome, Jonathan. I hope you are able to join us from time to time. Our current BOTM, In This House of Brede, appears long, but is a very fast read, and a bit of a page turner.

Catherine | 9 comments Hello, I’m Catherine and live in Denver, Colorado, US. I love reading books on Catholicism, European and US history, and for relaxation a good mystery. Agatha Christie is my favorite mystery author. I am a devout Catholic with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother, St. Catherine Laboure, and Padre Pio. My mother, God rest her soul, was French and it’s because of her I was raised in the Catholic faith. I’m looking forward to participating in the discussions in this group.

Sarah | 7 comments Hello, Everyone! I am so happy I found this group...

I am a French-American musician (classical and jazz) and a recent convert to Catholicism (I had my confirmation and first communion in November). Especially recently, I have been striving to learn more about the Catholic faith (my RCIA experience was a little limited due to COVID) and to obtain a deeper understanding of certain theological doctrines. I hope to discover more Catholic-centered literature and to partake in discussions with like-minded people :-). Currently, I am reading a couple Scott Hahn books (“Rome Sweet Home” and “The Lamb’s Supper”) and have on my to-read list Francis de Sale’s, St. Ignatius Loyola’s, and Fulton Sheen’s books, among others.

God bless!

Betty Notzon (bettypname) | 4 comments Has anyone read a book titled Michel, Michel by Robert Lewis? I think it's an amazing story about the tenacity of a Catholic woman to save a Jewish boy during WWII. Lots of food for thought about the rightness and wrongness if this well-meaning woman's actions.
