Josephine (Jo) (grumpyhippy) Hello There,
My name is Jo. I am a Catholic and I look forward to getting some new ideas for interesting religious books to read. I am currently reading Pillars of the Earth, only an easy going fiction but well researched I think.

Celia (cinbread19) I have been a member for a while but am using this thread to reach out.

For all members who read this:

Please pray prayers for the safety of those in the path of Hurricane Irma.

Here is a prayer we do at my church.

Hurricane Season Prayer (June 1-Nov 30) God, our Father, Creator and Lord of the Universe, You have set the earth on its foundation and all the elements of nature obey Your command. We humbly beseech You to keep us safe from all dangers and calm the storms that threaten us. May we be secure in Your loving protection and serve You always with grateful hearts. We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

message 110: by Celia (new)

Celia (cinbread19) Thank you Loretta. I think you are already praying for me and everybody affected.

Relatively new to Goodreads. Spent about 25 years wandering through life as an atheist, re-encountered the Lord and His Church in 1991. This is the third Goodreads group I've joined, first Catholic group...

Apart from the writings of the spiritual fathers and mothers of the Church, I prefer thoughtful literary fiction that draws us into the mysteries of love and separation (from one another, from God...), whether it be written by a believer or non-believer, Christian or pagan.

Of the great English-language fiction writers who happened to be practicing Catholics, I love Flannery O' Connor, Walker Percy, Graham Greene and Tolkien best.

Peace and blessings to all,
Ramon

George Calleja | 9 comments George Calleja - Hi to all...I just joined here....
My Biography
During the years 1990 to 1996 I was a full time missionary with ‘The International Catholic Programme for Evangelization - ICPE’ and have evangelized in various countries, such as Russia, Ghana, Poland, Germany, and Malta amongst others. Since 1997, I am married and am an active member of the Focolare Movement in Malta.

During the six years of my life as a missionary with ICPE’, to share His Love in different countries, I did face the challenge of saying ‘Yes’ to Him. It was a difficult decision to make, as I had to leave everything behind: my family, my friends, giving up my job... But as I had a deep faith in Him, I told Him 'Yes’... I will follow You... trusting, that he would take care of me in all aspects of my life. That prayer of mine opened the doors for me to give my ‘Yes’ to Him... to follow Him.

In the following six years as a missionary, and also after that time, Jesus has always taken care of me, has always provided me with blessings and grace, and has also taken care of me financially. Through faith, and my personal relationship with Him, He has taught me how to trust Him, and how to really follow Him freely and in peace.

During my time as a missionary with ‘ICPE’, I recall going through different sacrifices. There were times when as a group we performed a mime in the streets of Germany and other countries, to bring forth the message of Salvation, together with our testimonies and preaching. It wasn’t the first time that people watching us made fun of us, laughed at us and ridiculed us. I used to feel the pain… but during the same occasion, I would see other people receiving our message of hope and desiring Jesus… that would encourage me to keep on going spreading the Good News!

Many times, I have turned to Him in prayer for direction in life. He has always shown me the way in these situations. He has shown me what to do and what to say.

My recent experience of Jesus showing me the way, is precisely of writing Christian books. Since the early nineties when I was a missionary, I always felt this desire inside me to write books with a Christian theme. I never really understood what this meant, or maybe I did not take up the challenge at that time. Maybe, I never had the time to do it! Still, over these years I kept feeling that He wanted it from me! Since that time, it has always been in my heart… but it was never fulfilled!

My ‘Yes’ to take up this challenge happened in November 2014, and since then, I have published five Christian books. God has paved the way for me to do it. I do sacrifice myself to write these books, as it needs time to write and to publish. But, I thank Him, that through this challenge, although it is tough, it is also peaceful and it is rewarding to see other people appreciating my work, and receiving the messages I write… which are based on Jesus’ love to us, that is, His Salvation.

My writings are a simple message of encouragement for life, to make the reader think about what life is all about, and to give the reader a challenge to live life through God's Love. My writings are based on my Christian values, and I try to reach out to all people in the world, whatever their belief is, as I believe that every person is able to love his neighbour. So through my writings, I present the message to the readers to have this personal relationship with God and to love every person through God's love.

So, I do appreciate your prayers and support, that I may continue to publish Christian books. And finally I hope that you enjoy my writings and be blessed by reading them.

If you want to contact me personally please email me at :- peacethroughunity@gmail.com or visit my website: https://sites.google.com/site/georgec...

My name is Luis, I joined the group a couple weeks ago but didn't make time to introduce myself (or make any interaction) until now.

I'm from Mexico, 28 yrs old, just married a couple months ago and I love reading christian/catholic books. Since I have the memory of a fish I thought that commenting and sharing thoughts with someone else would help me to retain what I read, while making it more fun and interesting. So.. it's nice to meet you all and I'm looking fwd to share some thoughts/books with you.

Hi Luis, welcome to CBC. Felicitaciones a usted y su esposa. A ustedes les deseo toda la felicidad.

Where do you live in Mexico? We are going on a cruise through the Panama Canal in February and will be stopping in Cabo and Acapulco. Do you have any suggestions? :-)

message 132: by Luis (new)

Luis Bird | 2 comments Gracias, John!

That sounds great! to be honest I've never been in Cabo nor Acapulco, so I can't give you any advise but I've heard that specially Cabo is reaally beautiful, so I'm sure you will enjoy it! I live in Monterrey, a big city located at the north-east side of the country, it's close to Laredo/San Antonio.
Thanks for your welcome!

R. Vazquez (rgarciavazquez) | 6 comments Hello all,

I grew up Catholic, went through an extended atheist period, experienced the Lord's love in a powerful way in my thirties, came back to the Church, and frankly, I have trouble understanding how I got through those lean years without Jesus (I know, He was there the whole time.)

I enjoy well written fiction that tells us something about being human in a fallen world. Big fan of Flannery O'Connor, Walker Percy, Graham Greene, etc. (in addition to Hemingway, Kafka, Saunders). Currently, I'm reading Walter Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Ramon

Welcome to the Catholic Book Club, Ramon. I am also a revert, though slower than you, I didn't make it back to the church until my mid-40s. Welcome to our fellowship.

We read A Canticle for Liebowitz several months ago and you can find our discussion of that book here. Feel free to add comments to that discussion, if you like. If you do, please post a note about it here or in the Atrium so we can find it and perhaps respond.

Pop (sauraspop) | 0 comments Hi,

My name is Sam, but everyone just calls me Pop. I'm retired and have lived my whole life in CA (Central Alabama that is). I just joined the Catholic Book Club and am a recent friend of Fonch. Didn't even know we had a Catholic book club on Goodreads.

I finally received Toward the Gleam Saturday from Amazon and began reading today. If the rest of the book is anything like the first three chapters, then this is one great novel.

I can't say I'm a convert to Catholicism because I didn't go regularly to church of any kind in my youth. I was baptized while serving in Uncle Sam's Army back in 1964. Not always faithfully attending services until about twenty years ago. I married a wonderful Catholic woman of Italian heritage in 1968 shortly after I got out of the Army (we will be married 51 years in March 2019). Now I attend Mass regularly, including daily since I retired a few years ago.

I can't promise that I will be able to contribute much to the discussions since I haven't read Lord of the Rings but I will keep up with the group and maybe throw in a few thoughts along the way (more likely will be asking a lot of questions).

I published my first book last year, and have recently been asked by a few parishes to speak at various events and occasions. All new to me and also a fun way to engage in the new evangelization.
