I don't much love the romance either, and I'm really skeptical of the Saint Mortain choosing the to-be-killed.
I like Annith, but I suspect she might be kidnapped or something, and that's why they aren't allowing her out maybe?

I forgot to write this in the previous update, but I wanted to elaborate on careless by saying that she writes so much to Annith that she doesn't to the abbess; how do they know they're post isn't being read? Surely there must be means other than the ones Annith is aware of to open letters? (hide spoiler)]

It is just the fact that they are serving the queen rather than Mortain makes me think she will rebel some order of theirs and serve Mortain rather than the convent. Maybe, maybe not. Sybella's story is actually one of my favorites, but I think I used to feel the same as you. It doesn't necessarily continue the story, its more of a side plot. Finished (view spoiler)[ Hmm. This was enjoyable, but nothing special. I guessed absolutely everything! I know that sounds silly, but I wasn't surprised by anything. Even the fact that the chess pieces were poisoned I had guessed. I hope we see more of Anne in the next books and I think I will continue the series if not for curiosity about how Annith's and Sybella's stories will weave into Ismae's. Plus more of Death, my favourite character in this! Plus everyone seems to think the second one is even better than this book. (hide spoiler)]

If it helps, the next one follows Beast and Sybella, and her missions. it also gives us a bunch about her backstory, but the romance is what I love about the next two.
