Kristi (kristicoleman) Welcome! Please introduce yourself and tell us something about yourself.

message 2: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Hey everyone, I'm Kristi, I am a Wife and Mom to one kiddo. During the day I'm a Technical Designer. I'm going to facilitate this group and try to keep all the forums up to date. I can't wait to get the book discussions going!

I started listening to Jocko when the Tim Ferriss Podcast came out and I've been listening ever since. I'm also a member of the #0445club, I was incredibly motivated when I saw Jocko keep tweeting pics of his watch in the morning when he woke up and I decided that I was going to commit to getting up by 4:45am every morning too. I've managed to do it for almost 2 months! It changes a bit when I travel to Florida for work, but I'm still getting up and getting my workouts in, and the difference is incredible.

How about you? What is your life like and when did you start listening to the Jocko Podcast, what has it inspired you to do?

Josh McMahon | 2 comments I've been listening to Tim Ferriss podcast for quite sometime. Listened to Jocko's interview on Tim's podcast and immediately bought the audio book and finished it in one day. Implementation started immediately.

The book was both incredibly motivating and also very hard to hear. Having joined the Navy with a buddy to become a SEAL I never made an attempt. My friend and Shipmate made it and is on the teams now. It was very hard to hear the book and then have to face the fact that I am the only reason I didn't make it.

message 4: by Josh (new)

Josh McMahon | 2 comments Hit post accidentally.

Now I have to face this hard truth and live with my decision. But, although SEAL's is probably out of the picture I can still take ownership of those areas that I am weak. The podcast keeps me focused on getting better always and become the best I can be. No more excuses for mental weakness. Sometimes, the leadership we need is from places we least expect it...like the battlegrounds that forged men like Jocko and Leif and my brothers on the Teams.

Jocko Willink | 8 comments My name is Jocko. I am the person that makes the Jocko Podcast along with Echo Charles. I also wrote a book with another friend of mine named Leif Babin. It is called Extreme Ownership. I wake up early, I try to stay disciplined, and I train jiu-jitsu. Thanks for starting this Kristi. Let's see what happens from here...

message 6: by Chris (new)

Chris Langston | 4 comments Thanks Kristi for creating this group! Jockos appearance on Joe Rogans podcast is when I first started following Willink. That podcast was spot on regarding Iraq and Afghanistan. I've been a Government Contractor for almost 8 years now and did 4 yrs active duty before that. I've spent most of those 8 yrs deployed working with ISR Assets. I'm actually headed back real soon. I do plan to branch out and do something different in the next few years. I'm one of those guys that has never figured out what he wants to do. That has always been my issue. Like Josh I take ownership for that and don't make any excuses. I've been blessed to have worked with guys from the SO community. I have learned a lot from these individuals and continue to do so. I mostly listen to Jockos' and Rogans podcast these days. I have gained inspiration and knowledge from both. I used to be a gym rat; However, I lost my motivation for a few years. But, after listening to Jockos/Rogans podcast I have been in the gym almost every day for the last 3 weeks. I plan to start jiu-jitsu classes once I have the funds to do so. Thanks for what you do Jocko. God Bless you all!

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris Langston | 4 comments Oh an I plan to read Extreme Ownership after I'm done with 13 Hours: The untold story about Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff. I watched 13 Hours the movie a few weeks back and it was difficult to watch.

message 8: by Mike (new)

Mike | 4 comments Hello, my name is Mike and I live in Massachusetts. I love reading, jiu jitsu, and MMA. I learned of Jocko from the Tim Ferris Podcast. I believe Jocko has a lot to teach through his book, podcasts, etc. And I have a lot to learn.

message 9: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy | 4 comments My name is Jeremy and I live in San Diego. I am a father, husband, and I work providing technical support for various communication systems. I have been listening to Tim Ferriss for awhile now and was surprised when I downloaded the episode with Jocko. I bought the book and have been listening since.

Chris Shipley | 3 comments I am Chris. A man, husband and father. The pod cast with Jocko and Joe Rogan changed me. I have not stopped writing in my journal since. The timing of Jocko’s pod cast along with other factors in my life are in mind ‘providence’.
Thank you for starting this group!

I agree, I'm constantly surprised at the places I find mentorship, and how it can humble me when I realize that I've completely missed the point. Extreme Ownership taught me so much that I feel I should have learned years ago. Welcome to the group, please look around and jump in with comments, I'm glad you joined!

I'm glad I had the idea, and glad you came and joined! Please jump in and comment on the podcasts or the books, if you are reading one of them. I totally understand how listening to Jocko motivated you to start Jiu-Jitsu and get back to the gym, had the same effect on me! Stay with it!

What are you thinking of 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff?

Welcome Jeremy, are you listening to the audiobook of Extreme Ownership or listening to Jocko Podcast? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the book and the podcast! I love the audiobook and would recommend it to anyone.

Neil Gallivan | 10 comments Hi everyone. First Thanks to Kristi for starting this, I'm sure all of us will benefit. Second, A Big Thanks and debt of Gratitude to Leif, Jocko, ST3 TUB, and everyone else that was, are, and will be in harms way. These concepts, lessons, ideas, etc., are what I have been trying to put my finger on for many years. Many of these have been implemented for the past 15 years and have kept my guys safe...I just didn't know what it was. The two biggest pieces that were missing for me? Detach and check my ego. Damn. Since I've been listening to Jocko and Leif, and read the book, my ability to lead has come into laser sharp focus, pulled together the past 20 years of easy and hard lessons learned as a boss, and has helped me mentor and advance my direct and indirect reports of just under 100 personnel. Thanks just doesn't cover it, but, Thanks.

Jeremy | 4 comments I actually have the ebook and the audiobook of "Extreme Ownership" I do plan on picking up some copies the hardback for gifts. I think I enjoy the audiobook more. Jocko's and Leif's narration is great. I have had the privilege of supporting NSW for the last 14 years. The book really grabbed me from the start due to my relationship to the community. Let me first say I am not a SEAL. I was and still am a communicator. However reading the book I found myself wishing we had the same kind of leadership training. I primarily teach now and I see a lack of ownership in all my students. I wish I had this years ago. I greatly lacked ownership in my job so much to detriment of my students. I have been recently trying to improve myself and situation in life. I was really surprised when I heard the Tim Ferriss podcast. I actually was deployed to Iraq in support of Team 7 during Jockos first deployment. I have listened to all the podcast and have been waiting for the next one. Even back in 03 Jocko was a guy that stood out in a group of guys that would overall impress

Charlotte Allen Hi everyone! My name is Charlotte. I recently retired from a long career as an IT Program Manager providing technology solutions to the DoD. I love reading (especially history, world events, psychology), martial arts, and ballroom dancing.

Leadership and practices of excellence have always been an interest of mine. I first learned of Jocko and Leif when I bought their exceptional book Extreme Ownership. Retirement is boring so Jocko's podcasts and tweets have inspired me to "get after it" again....

Looking forward to the discussion and thanks Kristi for setting up the forum and Jocko for agreeing.

Mike B | 1 comments HI everyone (and a big thanks to Kristi for setting this up). I'm Mike. I'm a lawyer / dad / husband. I served in the Army, but before the wars, so it doesn't really count. :)

I'm a history nerd, decent weightlifter, and I love BJJ but haven't trained in about 2 years. Definitely plan on getting back into it.

I find Jocko inspiring, as we all probably do, and I'm excited for this community to grow.

Jeremy, Thank you for your service.

As a mom I know what you mean, it's interesting to watch my son and his friends and see their behaviors. I can't wait until Jocko talks about parenting, I think it will be an interesting episode. I feel like I've improved in many ways since reading the book, but parenting is always something that requires more learning and attention.

It's pretty amazing how motivating the podcast and Extreme Ownership is, I am constantly thinking that I need to "get after it" more.

Hello everyone! My name is Matt. So about me... I live in California, I am married to my hardworking wife, Melissa. I have 3 kids (age 10, 8, and 5). I am a Fire Captain for a So. Cal. Fire Department. I also have a small organic ranch/farm on the Central Coast of California, which keeps me and my wife busy!
I found out about Jocko about 6 months ago, while searching for leadership information. Jocko's information has been powerful and motivating! I have listened to his podcasts and interviews he has given, read Extreme Ownership, and followed him on Twitter. I have implemented many of his leadership principles at work with great success.
On a personal note, Jocko has even motivated me to step it up a notch physically. So, at age 38, I decided to start training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!
I am very happy that this group has been formed. It is so encouraging to meet like minded people and exchange information and grow.
-Matt

So far it's really good. I wish I had not watched the movie first. But, I couldn't wait to see it.

I run into that, my husband hates it because if there is a movie coming out that's based on a book I make him wait until I've read the book. The worst one was The Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart! I tried to read it after seeing the movie and couldn't stop hearing Bogey's voice as Sam Spade! I'll have to put 13 hours on my list!

Hey there Matt! Thanks for joining! Congrats on starting Jiu Jitsu! I plan on doing the same thing in a couple weeks. It's so exciting to see so many people who have been inspired to LEAD their lives because of the book and the podcast, I feel lucky to get to read everyone's stories.

Stay safe out there!

Kristi - I started training with Grand Master Dennis Brown at the Shaolin WuShu Training Center in 1998. He teaches both Kung Fu and Tai Chi, along with weapons in both disciplines. Tai Chi straight sword is my favorite. But I have a deep admiration and respect for all of the different schools. Don't know much about Jiu Jitsu, but looking forward to learning more...

I don't train much now because I have been focusing on building my dancing skills... :-) trying to be a better follower (hard for me).

That sounds like fun! Tai Chi and Kung Fu are beautiful to watch. So similar to dancing, but alone, so I can see why it would be hard to learn to follow! Good luck on acquiring the new skill, it sounds like you're having fun learning.

rubthemtogether (raymondwilliams) | 14 comments Hi. I'm Raymond. I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I became a Jocko fan after hearing him on the Ferriss podcast. I could do with some motivation to become more disciplined, so Jocko came along at the right time.
I haven't read Extreme Ownership yet because I'm trying to knock off at least part of my backlog of books. I imagine I'll read it soon.
Loving Jocko's 'cast. Going to listen to his Sam Harris interview today. If you're reading this, Jocko, thanks

What did you think of the Sam Harris podcast Raymond?

message 36: by rubthemtogether (new)

rubthemtogether (raymondwilliams) | 14 comments I've only heard the first half of it so far (my boss just banned earphones in the office, so I'll have to make the time elsewhere to finish it). I liked it, Jocko came across well. I'd never listened to Harriss' podcast before. I expected him to talk too much, but he was okay. What did you think? And also, thanks for setting these discussions up

message 37: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) I thought Sam talked a bit too much so Jocko could just give short answered to his elaborate questions. Overall a good podcast, I liked how Jocko talked about the Iraqi people, sometimes with the media I think we lose sight that these are just regular people too who want to live in peace. I also liked the discussion about training for violence, in my experience what Jocko said about being trained in a martial art actually deescalating violence is absolutely true.
