It's on my TBR list, I definitely want to read it before the movie comes out. I saw the movie trailer the other day. It looks really good.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the movie. But I definitely want to get to the book first!

I just saw this one in the library today. I thought about it but didn't get it. Now I wish I would have picked it up.

Yeah, I did. I didn't really know that it was just dealing with that short period of time, so it wasn't what I expected, but once I got over that surprise, I thought it was really well done. Great details and acting. Not upbeat, but like a little piece of history.

I can't stand hot weather, but I'm not sure I'm ready for winter just yet.

We had snow on the driveway on Halloween morning. The birdbath froze over (and we've dismantled it and stored it in the garage). And it was snowing again today. Hasn't really accumulated or stuck to the ground for much more than a couple of hours, but still....

I do not miss the snow. I lived in Minnesota or Canada most of my life until around 7 years ago we decided we were tired of winter. We moved to North Carolina and I loved the weather.

SANDYE (sandye_c) I have been looking for a new series to watch either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I have an Amazon fire stick and rely on mainly those two sources for most of my viewing entertainment. Any suggestions/recommendations? I'll give any series a try, although shows like Orange is the New Black, and The Walking Dead are definitely not my thing.

I suggest “Alias Grace” on Netflix, a series based on the book by Margaret Atwood. Set in 19th century Canada, a woman jailed for murder is interviewed by a psychiatrist. After watching it, you will definitely want to read the book!

SANDYE (sandye_c) I have a question about the monthly word scavenger hunts, which I am thoroughly enjoying btw...I'm currently reading a book on my Kindle (I read almost everything on my Kindle) and there aren't any page numbers, just a "location" number and the percentage showing how much of the book I've read up to that point. Is there a way to figure out a page number (mathematically) or is there a way I can post any words found in the scavenger hunt posts without including a page number (some type of substitution)?? TIA for your help. Wasn't sure what to do and scrolled through the topics and couldn't find an answer anywhere else. I'm sure I probably just missed it somewhere though! :-)

There are two options ...
1) You can list the "location number"
2) You can use Amazon.com's "look inside" feature ... look up the hardcover or paperback edition and click on the cover image. Then type in the word/phrase and it will usually cite the page number (and frequently show you the image as well).

SANDYE (sandye_c) Hello Everyone! I have sadly lost my motivation to read and can't seem to get it back. I had to go see my Cardiologist (head of my transplant team) on April 26th. Since he's in Pittsburgh, and I live in Philly, we made it a 4 day trip. The tech who did my echo got me sick (thanks a lot for that), and I got bit by a tick (no test results yet), so I've been feeling very "off".

Thought I'd post this question to everyone: What do you do to try to get your reading motivation back when it goes on vacation without you?!

Oh, no, Sandye ... that's a real bummer.

I usually go to my tried-and-true comfort reads - cozy mysteries. They are fast reads, and usually entertaining. Or I might pick up an old favorite and re-read it - To Kill a Mockingbird has never failed me.

One of my F2F book clubs meets today. It's a 615 page book and absolutely gripping. But I started it "late" and I'm not done ... AAARRRRGH. Was up til 1:00 a.m. last night trying to finish. I'm still about 30 pages from the end. Hoping to get that read while I'm at the beauty shop today (weekly manicure appointment) before I head to the book club meeting.

message 91: by Agumom (new)

Agumom I'll knock out some of the conversation topics here in one post. Here goes:

1) I made reading one of my New Year's Resolutions. I've succeeded in my numeric goal but still have to complete the Popsugar challenge goal.

2) When I'm in a reading rut or lose motivation, I also pick up an easy book I have loved before. Good bets for me are books like Call of the Wild, Hunger Games, Animal Farm, Harry Potter, a lot of Terry Pratchett, Never Let Me Go, The Rest of Us Just Live Here, A Monster Calls, and action stories I've only read once or twice like Ready Player One.

3) We went on vacation to a family resort in the Adirondacks this year. I was excited because I had saved a Backman book for the trip and a fluffy book, too. It was nice.

4) I love BINGO. I love games, because I am apparently a giant child.

5) Random - I subscribed to a monthly book box thing called Chocolate and Book from the UK and the first one I got was so fun! The chocolate bar, hot chocolate, and little cookie were delicious, the bookmark was unexpected, and the book was a Man Booker winner I haven't read yet called Moon Tiger. The book-type option I chose was "award winner". I'm really excited about this monthly literary pampering :)

6) Also random - I crochet but I don't like audiobooks. I always suffer a drop in my reading when I have a crochet project happening. It's not really a problem, but it's a thing for me.

7) TV Series! I am a huge dork and love Supernatural. I also love The Great British Baking Show, The Good Place, House MD, and I will always recommend the newer version of Battlestar Galactica even though it's not on Netflix. I'm watching The Great American Read on PBS when it airs and have been catching up on other PBS documentaries while crocheting.

I think that covers most stuff. I have a daughter who just started PreK this year. She loves being read to and is starting to pick up on certain words. She knows most of her letters consistently, so I'm hoping she'll be a solid reader, too!

The new season starts on Thursday! There aren't many current shows I watch, but Supernatural is one of them. I'm also a fan of iZombie which is going to be entering its last season when it starts airing.

I had a goal to read 52 books this year and have already passed that, so I think I'll up it to 60 or 70 for next year. I had been reading 100 a year, but with the addition of the crochet stuff and my kid getting older and no longer just rolling around in a Pack n Play, 100 books isn't realistic anymore.

Nice to hear about your hobbies. I loved the idea of Chocolate and Book box each month. I am going to have to look into it. My daughter got me a monthly tea box thing for a Christmas present. It was like have a Christmas present every month. I loved it.

I also watch Supernatural and The Great British Baking show.
I also picked this club because of all the games that have going each month.
Looking forward to Bingo.

I love the idea of games with reading. I've tried participating in more traditional book clubs, but I tend to rely on the library for my books and often I wouldn't be able to get the books chosen by the club in time to be part of the discussion. The scavenger hunt and Bingo games are much more suited to my book availability.

I tried a different book box that sent two used books a month along with tea and coffee. The first box was such a let down that I cancelled the subscription. The coffee wasn't very good, but more importantly I wasn't happy with the books. There wasn't enough of a distinction to be made when choosing genres so when I chose thriller (preferring psychological type thrillers) I ended up with a cop thriller. That was mostly my fault. I also chose general ficiton/contemporary literature, too, and ended up getting a book that barely had a three star rating on Goodreads. I was disappointed in that box, but because of that I was able to find a different box with a genre choice that I'm much more excited about and, you know, chocolate!

I can't imagine moving from an area with a ton of snow to an area with almost none. What a climate shock that must have been!

Hooray for shared television interests!

I'm not sure, it's my first box from Chocolate and Book. I imagine if you want to switch genres you can contact the company. The book I got seems newer, but since I picked Award Winning, I won't be surprised if I end up getting books that are older and won awards. I know the other book box I tried had the option to change genres in its description. These services are probably used to book-lovers getting into genre-funks every once in a while!
