Anita Pomerantz | 9296 comments You could win a $50 gift certificate to the online bookstore of your choice.

Simply post a farewell ode to Shelfari by February 29th. Administrators will narrow the choices down to three, and then members will vote for the winning ode!

Post your odes as a reply to this message.

Prose or poetry are both acceptable!

Make us laugh, make us cry, say good-bye . . .Shelfari will live in our hearts and minds for a long, long time.

Please find below my ode to Shelfari (as a Haiku):

New Moon Play Book Tag
Friends nested among the stars
Goodnight Shelfari

Regina Lindsey | 1005 comments Me: I'm so bad at this
Audience: How bad are you
Me: I'm so bad it would end up sounding like Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin's endorsement of Trump on last week's SNL. (That's how I would sound rhyming but it wouldn't be near as funny)

I will enjoy reading everyone else's and spare you all the agony of reading mine.

I want to forgive you, but where do I start?
All of my books are in disarray,
My favorite groups have moved away
While I sit here exiled, falling apart.

So, even a sestina? Because even though I wrote many free verse poems in high school (almost all long destroyed, even the good ones), I have this personality quirk that makes me want to tackle something onerous and hard. But perhaps too long. I wrote one once long ago...

Or, can it be poetry set to music? Because I have another idea kicking about. If we provide a link or something?

Ok, I confess I know nothing about poetry. So I can't really guide you much. Just realize members will be voting on the winner so it probably needs to be something they will actually read and enjoy.

Translation: Use your best judgement.

Administrators will read whatever is posted, but can't promise members will.

Nicole D. | 1573 comments One Minute Ago ...

One minute ago
In the land of MySpace
A denizen whispered to me
Shelfari

One minute ago
My spreadsheet transformed
Rosewood shelves to see
Shelfari

One minute ago
I read 50 books then I read 50 more
Then 653
Shelfari

One minute ago
I made a new friend
and then I made two and then I made three
Shelfari

One minute ago
My TBR grew
So many have filled me with glee
Shelfari

One minute ago
Begat one minute ago
Amazon said 5 days to me
Shelfari

One minute ago
We knew it was coming
Denial was no longer to be
Shelfari

One minute ago
I moved to goodreads
It's you, not me
Shelfari

Jen | 1545 comments A Seussical Ode to Shelfari

One book
two books
Read book
Next book

This book
Next book?
Print book
Ebook?

This one fits the monthly tag
This one was a major drag
Say! What a lot
Of books there are

Yet, where to put them? And how to sort them?
How to date them? And how to tag them?

Some are sad
And some are rad
And some are very, very bad

Why are they
Sad and glad and bad?
I do not know
Go ask your admin

Some are short
And some are long
The long one has
A 10-page song

From there to here, from here to there
Too many books
No time to spare

Shelfari comes
to save the day
to keep my tbr at bay
starting friendships there to stay

Oh me! Oh my!
Oh me! Oh my!
I do not want
To say goodbye

It’s time to go
Time to move on
All this we owe
To Amazon

What happens next? I cannot say.
But I bet we'll go a long, long way

We’ll miss you now
We’ll shed some tears
But through it all
We stick with peers

Some may leave
But most will stay
To play book tag
Another day

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments A Shelfari Fib, in which the number of syllables per line follows the fibonacci sequence

My
Shelf
Empty
Suddenly
Only it is not
Glitches foretold the sad future
In one minute my rosewood bookshelf will disappear
Though I followed my friends to another space, nothing will ever replace Shelfari

punxsygal | 306 comments Shelves are empty,
Hearts are heavy,
Taps are playing,
Adieu, Shelfari, Adieu

Mindy aka serenity | 120 comments Years past Shelfari gave to me the opportunity to be social around something I have loved since childhood- books. Play Book Tag was my first book club, giving me a voice online when I couldn't speak aloud. Inside Shelfari I found an identity, shared by people from around the world, coming together to celebrate the written word. It allowed me to take my love of books to a new, higher, and more immersive level. For that I will always be thankful, Shelfari.

Shelfari, I bid you farewell. I do not want to let you go. You were a friend to me when making friends was difficult. I will always remember my beautifully organized shelf, my ability to pitch in and edit entries of books, but most of all the groups. Though I wasn't always active, they gave me a sense of belonging, knowing that I had friends whose sole reason for coming together was reading. That is a powerful statement, and I give thanks to Shelfari for being the catalyst of such a remarkable community. Goodbye, Shelfari. I will truly miss you.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments While I appreciate everyone's sentimental moments, I am more of the crazy ex who doesn't get sad, she gets even.

To that end....

Break-up Ode to Shelfari

Shelfari, you were perfect,
Beautiful and kind.
But then you up and left,
With no glance behind.

At first I was devastated,
Sobbed like never before.
Begged you to come back,
Then decided to even the score.

So, you don’t want me
And my Nora Robert’s reviews?
Fine. Let’s end this ‘ship,
I never really loved you.

You lied to my face:
"I will never leave you for money!"
Then Amazon came along,
And you fell for its honey.

I hope you enjoyed
Your short-lived flame
You thought Bezos would take you places
But he left you in shame.

And now you have nothing
You are well past your prime.
Don’t try crawling back
You’re not worth my time.

I cleaned off my shelf,
Refuse to visit or write.
Stop sending me emails,
Go fly an f-ing kite.

I’m moving on to Goodreads,
Which is totes an upgrade.
It has more features and options,
And our love will not fade.

Remember when you mocked me
For wanting hyperlinks?
Well, Goodreads gave them to me
So take that you rat fink.

Pages load quickly
And messages actually post.
Unread labels work properly,
Which is what I love most.

So, I thought I loved you,
But I was dead wrong.
I will smile and wave
During your funeral procession song.

Love,
The crazy ex.

I love this. I will always miss Shelfari because it was my first online book group love. But I have to say GR is growing on me, lots of great tools here. However Shelfari is/was far more aesthetically pleasing.

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments What, no limmerick?

There once was a site called Shelfari
Amazon axed it without being sorry.
Our tale of woe
When it had to go,
It was truly beyond compari.

annapi | 5505 comments LOL nice one Denizen! Never occurred to me to do a limerick. Hmm.... ideas....

message 32: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments Denizen inspired me to write a limerick too:

Two rivals, Good Reads and Shelfari
Battled long for bookworm territory
Though not unexpected
GoodReads's death blow connected
Just as hard as Holms's head kick to Rousey.

Well, now I won't write one since there are 2.. I thought of it, but hadn't come up with a third rhyme (didn't spent much time on it.) I'm still thinking about what I'll write.

message 39: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3522 comments Once upon a January dreary
I learned the news. “Why”? I query
Could Amazon rip Shelfari from our core
There is no cause to treat us so
We’ve come to rely on it, you know
Can it be a rumor, only this and nothing more?

Alas, ‘tis true, and move we must
Shelfari left to gather dust
We sadly close the once welcoming door
But wait! Is there a chance yet
That we can save our groups? Get
Together somewhere else and gather as before?

Ah, to Goodreads we must go
Heave our shelves to and fro
Learn the new language, format, folders. What a chore!
We’ll survive all this and thrive
Can Shelfari every truly die?
Nevermore, quoth Shelfari, Nevermore.

Karin | 9245 comments Rene Reader frowned, looking at the Pink Banner of Death. It couldn’t be; and yet there it was. After two years of neglect and willful refusal to rectify the building problems, Amazon was officially closing Shelfari. Forever. It was bad enough that this was going to happen, but such a reminder of The Lord's Pink Ocean. “Amazon,” Rene thought, scratching a mosquito bite, “You're Breaking My Heart.”

Rene sat back, paused to glance out the Rear Window and sighed ruefully. What was there to do? Where was there to go? It wasn’t that there weren’t alternatives out there. Booklikes, Leafmark, LibraryThing, Goodreads. All had things in common with Shelfari, of course. Readers who posted reviews, at least some semblance of groups, various sorts of organizing books on shelves, tags, even. But nothing like Shelfari.

Gone would be the days of tagging gleefully, searching the top 200 tags for Play Book Tag. Gone would be the elegant shelves, looking so much like the real ones. Gone would be the Librarian, Editor and Author banners across the Avatars of various members. Gone would be the visually appealing colours of the site so Easy on the Eyes. But most of all, gone would be the nested replies, so conducive to great discussions. It was the End of an Era.

It was time to face a Brave New World, to venture into the Final Frontier , to Leave the past behind and Time To Emigrate? Somewhere Else.

Rene Reader took some time, exporting shelves to Goodreads, frantically trying to see what happened to missing books, talking stock of what could be done. When the day arrived, Rene Reader left Shelfari, wiping away A Single Tear and moved on with The Brave.

Thanks. I barely made it on time. I kept forgetting, then when I tried all my ideas, they failed. Finally, close to the wire, I got this idea, then I thought of that first book, which I read as a young teen, etc.

But I am in awe of all the great odes that were written!!!! I had no idea how much literary talent we had among us.
