Was a two book fantasy series from the 1980s or early 90s where the protagonist warrior hero was carrying some form of imp that could read his mind. Had a humorous edge to them and quite explicit sex scenes, but were actually quite good stories in their own right. I seem to remember they had riding eagles later in the book and the antagonist from book one ends up siding with the heroes in book two.

Fantasy, riding birds and sex scenes all adds up to the Gor series by John Norman. There was no mind-reading imp, though, at least not that I remember.

ETA: Also, the Gor series went on a lot longer than two books. This sounds like someone trying to tap into the same market as Norman, though.

No it's not Gor. It's more fantasy than planetary in style and better written
