Brandon | 19 comments I will keep it too. I am wondering if they are rigged against us since some other people have said those without reviews have won books on other discussions from a Google search.

message 52: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments I would say keep entering and enter ones that don't have many entries. I enter tons but mostly highly requested books. I won one... Shylock is my name.

message 53: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 19 comments Hi Shylock. I will keep up that advice, though it is hard to find books in that that don't have low entrants numbers, and I am staying away from ones in foreign countries like The Philippines as I am leery of that area of the world. I also look for ones that sound interesting and sound like books I have read as I am a huge fan of the Fargo Adventure series, the Dirk Pitt Series, and the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series and anything that sounds remotely similar to those, I am all in on it.

message 54: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments Ha ha, sorry. Shylock is my name was the title of the book I won. My name is Jen. Yes, I agree any book you likely want to read will have lots of people vying for the book

message 55: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 19 comments No problem. I thought that was like a nickname or something. And Jen, that is always my luck with books or anything in particular. My whole life has basically been a country song to this point, minus the boozing.

message 56: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments Brandon you are singing my song! I have been pontificating for weeks about wanting to win a giveaway! I have entered probably about 75 in four months. All I want is to come home to a surprise gift. People tell me it happens, but we will see! We are singing now in harmony. Ask anyone, you'll hear it's been my theme!

message 57: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 19 comments I believe you. I have seen some groups will some who have struggled to win a book. I have entered at least that many giveaways and apparently, I entered the ones that everyone wants that book, most likely to resell on Amazon,Ebay, or Craigslist. That ruins it for us true readers who want to read the book and see if we enjoy it.

message 58: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments We are hosting a giveaway on our blog to one of 5 copies of a thriller called The Jump. Not too many entries so far so if you like thrillers (not really my cup of tea), you may have better luck there. Otherwise, just keep entering all the ones you can. At least once a week, I enter giveaways.

Here's the link to our giveaway. Just scroll to the bottom for the rafflecopter link. There were only 25 entries last time I checked. I'll try to post our giveaways here when I remember since we have much better odds.

Brandon, I'm right there with you . . .I've entered a zillion giveaways and have won nothing. I belong to another website, BookBrowse, and they have a lot of opportunities for getting early release books, and I've received lots of those, but they do have an annual fee that may not be appealing to you.

On another note, we are going to be auctioning books here for participation points (points you earn for writing reviews on PBT). I know you just got here, but we are going to have a bunch of ways you can earn some points in the month of August, so you can "shop" for some of the books if you want. Not sure what genres you most enjoy . . .but maybe it will be a chance for some free books.

Brandon | 19 comments I don't really like paying websites. But thanks for the suggestions.

message 61: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2237 comments I've won one giveaway on here. It was for a Janet Evanovich book which are pretty popular so I was surprised. I haven't entered any giveaways on here for awhile though.

I don't think any of the suggestions made were for paying websites....you mean websites you have to pay to be a member of?

message 63: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 19 comments Yes. But by the way, I just finally won a giveaway I was beginning to think I wouldn't win. Got a book by Matthew Santoro, MIND = BLOWN: Amazing Facts About this Weird, Hilarious, Insane World. I'd like to know who picked my name there and the other lucky recipients as that was an unlucky one. Well over 1000 people requested and I was a lucky winner. Hopefully I continue getting lucky now.

Ah, I see that Anita did mention Book Browse, which does have an annual fee. I totally understand your hesitation with paying for websites, I have not done that yet either.

Congrats on the win!

message 65: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 19 comments Thank you. I don't think I will ever got into anything that requires paying on a scheduled plan unless I absolutely had to.

Amy | 12911 comments You WON a GIVEAWAY? Who feels sorry for me! I'm beginning to feel defeated. I signed up for another two this morning. I'm certainly over 100 tries. Send me white light, a rainbow with a pot of books at the end.

Keep it up. You'll win a giveaway before long. I have won two since that posting. I have no idea how I won, but I am guessing my listening to Andy Griffith might have something to do with it as I just restarted with that and here I am winning. You have to probably hit the right number or find something like a superstition that will allow you to hit the ball out of the park.

OH MY GOSH - - seriously, you won a giveaway? How is that possible? Congratulations!! Happy reading, Brandon!

Honestly, I'm with Amy. I'm sure I've entered at least 100 . . .

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I don't think this has been asked. If it has, I'm sorry. If we're a couple of days late finishing a book, can we still count it towards the tag? For example, I'm currently reading The 5th Wave for the 2013 tag. I'm trying to finish it before Saturday, but I don't know if I can. If I finish it on Saturday or Sunday, can I still post it as a book read/reviewed for the 2013 tag or should I just post it as one of October's other books?

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Jenni Elyse wrote: "If we're a couple of days late finishing a book, can we still count it towards the tag? ..."

Jenni, I am not 100% sure the day that Anita goes through and tallies up the participation points, but I am pretty sure she gives you a few days to wrap up any lingering books and reviews.

Just be aware that we do bump that folder down on the homepage so the new month is on top. You'll just have to scroll down a bit farther to find the September folder.

Yes, I do try to tally close to the first of the month, but not right on that day so you do have a few days wiggle room to get those final reviews posted!

message 73: by Book Concierge (last edited Nov 07, 2016 02:06PM) (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8411 comments I'm participating in a challenge in another group that has us reading the Caldecott winners (picture-books) .... I'll have lots of reviews in the coming months on these books for very young children.

Should I post them ONLY if they fit the monthly tag? (I'm about to read Make Way for Ducklings which would fit the "animal" tag.) Should I post all of them regardless of tag?

Don't want to abuse the participation points, and I'm likely to read 50 or more of these picture books in the coming months.

message 74: by Susie (new)

Susie I'm not sure if the answer but I'm really looking forward to the reviews. :-)

Thanks for asking and not just plowing ahead!

I'm not as concerned about the earning of participation points as I am about flooding the threads with reviews of children's books that are probably not terribly of interest to most of the group. Although some people will like them!

May I suggest that you simply start a thread in each category (tag and other) entitled Caldecott Winners and then post your reviews sequentially in that thread - one message per review. Normally, this would make the participation point counting very difficult, but with just one person and advance notice, I can handle it.

Thanks so much for asking in advance! Let me know if you think this can work for you. Then, people who are interested in these reviews (parents of young children most likely) can find them readily without the rest of the adults getting frustrated.

Great idea, Anita .... I'll do that.

message 77: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments Although I probably read a lot of them as a child and with my children, I'll be especially interested in seeing the last 25 years or so when my children were moving on with their reading. My first grandchild is due in February so picture books are looming on my horizon again.

Make Way for Duckings is a great children's book, and such a classic. Plus, if you ever go to Boston you can go to the Public Garden see the statue of the mother ducks and Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack. You can also see the swan boats.

You can! Anita tallies the Participation Points each month and she generally gives a few days for people to wrap up writing their reviews.

She can chime in with how many days she usually gives, but I believe it it 2 or 3.

If you are really late in posting it, you can always put it in the current month's "other reads" thread. You will only get one participation point for it but something is better than nothing! And, you can still tag it on the PBT shelf with the tag you read it for.

I will make sure to leave some warm sunshine & beach after I leave! I may soak up most of it, though. These Minnesota bones need some heat! My first time in that neck of the woods (Playa del Carmen).

Lol, I just returned from Mexico! Have a wonderful time! Yes, I wait at least 2 days and sometimes up to 5 before I tally the participation points . . .so feel free to post your review on the 2nd. I'll try to keep an eye out.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments My question would be most appropriately placed under the "How to post a review" discussion but since comments aren't allowed there I guess I'll post it here.

I'm fairly new here and have not participated in the monthly tags. My question is, if I want to create a post/review on the book I read for the monthly tag is it okay if I just give it a number of stars and state my opinion on the book, rather than actually reviewing what the book is about? I'm terrible at writing reviews so that's why I ask.

message 88: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Tessa, that is absolutely fine! We do suggest that reviews are a minimum of four sentences just to give people a sense if you liked it or not and a few reasons why.

But, no summary required! Some members write longer reviews, but that is their personal choice.

message 89: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Ack!!! Thanks for the heads up. Each month we have so many updates to make that sometimes we miss one. Will fix as soon as I am on my computer. Very much appreciate the notification!!! Sicial issues was last month.

message 90: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Hi Dyln, welcome to PBT!

For the monthly tag, yes, you can read any book that is in the official GR shelf or any book that you believe fits the tag.

Sometimes we play games/have additional challenges where we are more strict for competitive fairness reasons, and the book must have a specific tag here on GR, but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

For now, any book that you believe is an autobiography will work for the match read!

message 91: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments No, it’s not too late. The challenge is to read 6 books from a list that you pick. You still have plenty of time!

Magdalena | 414 comments So I'm going to sound really dumb but I can't figure out how to post a review. I've read the instructions but I'm still confused. It said to post the review in a folder but can't seem to find where that is and it also said something about a thread?

So, each month, we have two folders for reviews. One is for the month tag. This month, it's called: March 2018: Autobiography.

If your book doesn't fit the monthly tag, post it in the other thread. This month it's called: March 2018: Other Books

So, click on either of those titles (those are the "folders" after you go back to the group page. I could give you direct links here, but I want to help you find them for next time, as well!)

After you have clicked on the title of the folder you want to post your review to, you should see a link near the top right that says "new topic". Click that, and from there, you can post your review. "Thread" would mean the same as what GR appears to call "topic" from this "new topic" link.

Does that help?

I'm glad you mentioned this. I'm quite new and thought I'd messed my shelves up somehow, I couldn't work out where my Want to Read books had gone!

It's no problem at all! Glad it helped!

ETA: I went back and reread my instructions and accidentally said "thread" when I meant "folder" at one point. That probably didn't help anything, but I think you were able to figure it out! Sorry about that!

Jamie Zaccaria What if the book we want to read should be listed on the shelf but isn't? Does it still count? For example a book about "strong women" and it has strong women characters but isn't listed on the shelf?
