Thank you very much.

Well, Snowpocalypse has happened. Electricity went off around 4:00 a.m. and just came back on. Somehow it is not as fun now as when I was a kid. Wind was whipping, snow blowing everywhere, trees down, etc. I stuck the dogs in sweaters and curled up under a blanket. Reading in the dark or by candlelight is not so great, either. The house managed to maintain a reasonable temperature but I wanted a hot drink. One of the dogs went out and came back in with a snow drift on his back. Yesterday it was 73; today's high is forecast to be 38.
K.A. wrote: "Just saw a person online compare Trump's speech patterns with Manson's."I'd like to see that link! Were they focusing on the ambulatory-schizophrenia traits or the grandiosity?
It wasn't anything detailed - just a comment. The gist of it was that they both go off the rails in mid-sentence, ending up in a different place from where they began, like chain-speaking, with one idea leading to a not-necessarily related idea. So I guess that would be the ambulatory-schizophrenia thing.
Yeah, disorganized speech is part of schizophrenia. I keep waiting for Count Trumpula to degenerate completely, into what we shrinks call "word salad."
I'm called a therapist, but really I'm a social worker doing home-based therapy work in households with severely disturbed children. A lot of the kids are impervious to counseling so I'm more of a case manager in a lot of these households.
Sounds like very worthwhile work! Must be emotionally very draining at times though. If I could have cloned myself, one of me would have gone into research on psychopathy and worked with Dr. Robert Hare in BC Canada. :)

If I had an alter ego I would put her to work learning to reconstruct faces on unidentified skulls.

OMG. Count Trumpula. Love it.
I really wish there was a way to bring the number of ratings into Calibre so the rating had more meaning. I could then maybe come up with an algorithm and maybe even have Calibre calculate it. Right now I adjust manually when I think of it.

Wait, ratings of what? What is Calibre?
Book ratings, of course. :) A book with 5 stars but only 10 reviews/ratings is not as impressive as a book with 4.5 and 10,000 reviews. Calibre is the most popular (and free) ebook management software around. I record everything in there and have used it for years. Lots and lots of flexibility. You can convert ebook from one format to another too. Easy to use but you can get fancy.
When I add an ebook into Calibre, it adds metadata (ratings, summary, tags, cover, etc.) to the book from whatever source I want. I use Amazon and Goodreads metadata.
Yeah, I do too. It's what I do at work all day long. I think I am starting to affect my long distance vision. :-) BUT ebooks gives me more options; ebooks from the library (I live quite a ways from the library), cheaper versions of books I want to read, I can load up the ebook reader for trips, etc. And some books lately are only in ebook format. BUT there is nothing like a printed book. :-)
I agree. A friend of mine lived in Russia for years and the only books she could find in English, other than Stephen King titles, were e-books.
Do you mean as an author when you get a bad review? I can only say what I think as a reader as I am not an author but, in my opinion, you never comment on their bad review. You let it go. If you do comment, they may view it as intimidating or challenging their right to their opinion. I base this on what I witnessed when an author replied to bad review(s) on Amazon. It backfired.
Thanks Shelley - I am an author and a poor review does knock your confidence - I guess you cant please everyone all of the time.
I bet it does! It would me. It would be especially hurtful if the review feels totally unfair. I know myself - I would find it very upsetting. It must be very "nail biting" to put something you have created on the "world wide" stage. Encourage all your friends and family who have read the book to post a review to cheer you up! lol (I mean...tell them to be honest and everything but chances are they will be nice reviews teehee).
Hang in there. I admire authors. The only "heroes" I have ever had really are authors. I wish I could write. Can't sing very well either. lol
Hi, Michael, I'm an author as well. Just ignore it and get more reviews; it'll get averaged out over time. I've had some that just puzzle the heck out of me; it's like the person reviewed the wrong book. One person mistook the genre and was disappointed when the book she read did not meet her expectations for the genre she thought she was reading in, so she rated the book poorly, even mentioning the (incorrect) genre in the review. There's nothing you can do about stuff like this. A big thing to remember is that Goodreads is a site for Readers, not for Authors, although it caters to authors to some extent. Always come at things from your reader viewpoint here and things will go better.
If you need some reviews, check out the review groups here on Goodreads; for example, Review Group here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
This is what's called a Non-Reciprocal Review Group; in other words, you agree not to review the books of anyone who has reviewed you to avoid any appearance of reciprocal reviewing agreements. It is set up with a database to avoid such clashes. Basically you agree to read four books in exchange for four reviews from other, impartial, authors, who are getting their own reviews from yet other people (you can also join as strictly a reader).
Best of luck!
Thanks K.A. you are correct. True Crime can be an acquired taste. I tend to write from a historical/factual perspective - telling it like it is without too much 'embroidery'.Any feedback is good - it helps me improve ... its just sometimes ... perhaps I need thicker skin.

Hi and welcome Michael. I am not a writer but I know everyone has different tastes and what one person loves another hates so not everyone is going to love your book. I have seen other authors that have tried to respond to bad reviews and they come across as whining and argumentative so, like you said, you just have to have a thick skin, and as others have said, the good and bad reviews will average out. I know if I read reviews of my most favorite book in the whole world, there would be some that said they hated it. Good luck with your book!

They are both rescues and both involved in K9 Nosework. And they are both asleep on the couch at the moment!
By the way, Michael, the Amazon link from your book doesn't seem to be working. Not sure where the glitch is, you might want to check.

Amazon Aust. is correct though.
Heelers are such wonderful loyal dogs.

To confuse things even further, in some places what you're referring to as a Kelpie is called a Silkie, and Kelpies are also horses in some places. But the ones we're talking about are herding dogs:

Along with Scotch merle collies and dingoes, and a bit of Dalmation, they are the ancestors of Australian Cattle Dogs.

That is one good looking pup.

And to deepen the confusion, let me add that in many parts of the British Isles, a Kelpie is alternatively known as a Selkie or Silkie.
