50.1 - Sheila's task: It's Leap Year, Just 4 fun, let's enjoy that extra reading day!

This is a 3 book task. Read 1 book from each option.

**Note: Books with the genre childrens or kids may NOT be used for this task.**

Book A: Read a book that is 4th in a series AND that has a 4 letter word in the SERIES name as noted on Goodreads.
example: Free Fall by Robert Crais (Elvis COLE #4)


Book B: Read a book that is FIRST published in one of the last four leap years: 2016, 2012, 2008, 2004
example: Dead Scared by Sharon Bolton (first published 2012)


Book C: Read a book with a 4-word title by an author with a 4 letter name (first, middle or last). Articles like The, A, or An WILL count for words in the title. Subtitles should be ignored. They are not included in the word count.
example: All Dressed in White by Mary Higgins Clark

I LOVE his books, but the City Watch series and Tiffany Aching series are particularly awesome in my opinion. I cried for days when he died last year.

I just realized that Goodreads lists Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series as "Miss Marple" and I haven't read #4 yet - yes!

So that takes care of Book A, Book B is easy enough since I have a number of 2016 galleys to read (especially books pubbed in Jan/Feb) so now I'm just working on finding Book C. Because I can find a four-word title and an author with a four-letter name, but not both together in the TBR :p

It is always so sad to see a favorite author pass away. I felt that way when Robert B. Parker passed away. So would you recommend starting with book 1 of the Discworld series if just starting out in the fantasy arena, or would starting with Guards! Guards which is # 1 in City Watch series be the way to go?

Another huge TP fan here and I'd recommend starting with Guards! Guards! myself. The first few books in the Discworld universe were good but it took a while for him to really establish his world and what he was writing. I read The Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic first and although I enjoyed them I didn't become a devoted fan until I read Guards! Guards!

He's more humour than fantasy really. And social commentary. The fantasy setting is just the background. Although Guards! Guards! is a little more fantasy orientated because he pokes a bit of gentle fun at some of the more common fantasy tropes.

As you get further into the series the social commentary part of his books becomes a little more obvious.

for the love of god don't start with Colour of Magic / Light Fantastic!

Guards! Guards! or Wyrd Sisters are both good starts. I have a huge affection for Wyrd Sisters as that was my entree to Discworld, and the witches in general are brilliant - my favourite sub-series, doubly so when the Tiffany Aching series overlaps.

I love Moist von Lipwig (Going Postal), but you really need to have more of an understanding of Discworld before heading there.
I personally am not a fan of books where the Wizards are the main characters (Last Continent, Unseen Academcials are turn offs for me)

2. The Birthing House - first published in 2008
3. So Help Me God! by Herbert Tarr - 4 word title (without punctuation) and author last name 4 letters

That is perfect Bea. BTW the Anna Pigeon series is my absolutely very favorite series. I love Anna and Nevada Barr writes in a way that totally immerses me into the fantastic settings.
