Admittedly I don't know historically what happened in these cases, but in all the Regency fiction I have read over the years, Nothing was allow to smear the family name, cover it up at all costs. Often the "bad apple" was exiled and cut off from the family coffers rather than brought before the magistrate.I think it is probably close to the truth. At the time of this novel, bow street runners and police forces were relatively new and the upper class were considered pretty much untouchable.
Unfortunately, it is very close to the truth.One only has to look at more recent crimes involving the aristocracy to see the coverups - the Cambridge spies come immediately to mind.
