David | 5 comments Read this book around 2010...
The protagonist finds himself in a brutal underground prison where there are only seven (or five or nine?) other prisoners, divided into two groups. The two groups alternate being in charge of one another.
I think one of the groups is a bit crueler than the other, shocking the other prisoners whenever they feel like it.
There is an exit to the free world (up a huge ladder tunnel), but it is difficult to get to. If one actually does make it all the way up to the top and opens the door, everyone in the prison will be killed as well.
Someone is watching them and is in charge of when rations are sent down. It turns out that it is actually a severely deformed prisoner kept in a secret room of the prison who makes all the decisions.

Rowan | 86 comments I thought I had the answer until I read that you actually figured out who was making the decisions. I've read something very similar but the book ends before the culprit is found. Good luck

What's the name of the one you're reading? My memory may be a bit compromised at this point, maybe it IS the same one!

Rowan | 86 comments It could be you remembering two different books as one perhaps? The one I read a couple of years ago I think was Bunker by Kevin Brooks. Worth a read regardless, some good characterisation

Rowan's suggestion - The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks.

Adele | 1432 comments Some of this sounds like Lockdown - underground prison, climbing up a long shaft to try to escape - but it is not an exact match.

omg i think this is it!! at the end does it turn out that the warden is the severely deformed prisoner i mentioned? or something similar to that? that he is down there with them?

Adele | 1432 comments The warden does live down in a secret lower area of the prison. And . . . the thing is there are five books in the series and they follow closely one after the other to make one big complete story. I read them all a while ago and I can't remember what gets revealed when. If you only read the first one I don't want to spoil the later books accidentally. At some point in the series you find out (view spoiler)

David | 5 comments Thank you so much. I'm 99% sure this is it!

Adele | 1432 comments Yay!
