She is not new, but Harriet grows immensely as a character in this book. She inserts herself in George's financial affairs (in the deal to buy the mine from Valentine) where before she was content just spending his money. In addition, she comes closest to bringing a sort of reconciliation between Ross and George that anyone has done. I really loved her.
