SOLVED. YA Book about a mage--involves gems [s]

The book was about a young woman in a fantasy world who found out that she had magic. Not only did she find out that she had magic but that magic was practiced as part of a partnership. She finds out her partner is an aristocrat and they do not get along at first. There is something about gems as part of the plot. The book was already older by the time I read it in the 90's, so I am guessing the 70's or 80's publication. Thank you!!

Erin, do you remember how old the girl was -- teens, twenties? Do you remember how the gems were involved -- like, did they need the gems to trigger the magic, did each gem have different powers? And do you recall anything about the plot or the central conflict, like was it just a coming-of-age story where the girl learns about her magic, or was there a villain they had to defeat? Do the girl and her partner end up romantically involved?

Michele, the girl was a young woman, in her late teens or early twenties. If I remember correctly her father was a jeweler and she was sort of following in his footprints within the guild. I don't think the gems were involved in the magic itself but I could be wrong. I don't remember the central conflict very much except it involved her and her partner going to court and among the aristocracy to stop the villans and in fact her partner is a member of the aristocracy. She and her partner are not romantically linked and on fact they are both involved with other people. I hope this helps!! Let me know if you need more.
