Amazon is even more annoying in the support area..I am certain the replies I got were from an answering robot, picking up certain words it recognised, and sending the answers from their FAQ... At least GR has REAL people with great English Comprehension skills, attending..

Perhaps, but their customer service is quite good in my experience, once you find your way there (usually via an order).

GR helper Arturo sent me simple instructions on how to import the csv file and all except about 10 got re-starred..

Success.

Karin, Yes, the prob turned out to be due to them knowing monthls in advance that shelfari was going to close... Pity I wasted so much time, but hey, that's life.. GR sorted it and now I have an authors page.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll have to investigate all of that once I'm a bit more settled in. First it was to find my groups that moved here (even the ones I wasn't active in last year for a while) and some of the people I know, plus have my shelf transferred (I have yet to check all the mistakes made in that transfer.

So one of the cool things about Goodreads, mentioned at PBT is that if you go to the top of the discussion and look to the right you will see the books mentioned in the discussions as well as the authors.

I am adding the children's bookGreen Eggs and Ham so you can scroll up and see it. Isn't that fun.

I'm going to try to add some new folders and a discussion on introductions today.

Most stars are now in situ, thanks to the simple instructions from Arturo.

If you scroll all the way up and look to the right under all the group information and search there is something that says:

I've figured out that the books missing from my shelf are the ones from between 1990 and sometime in 2000.

Arturo sent me such simple links and info, I got most of them sorted.

I have looked for this info for months, and didn't find it by searching amazon.. Lettah's Gift by Graham Lang so happy..

mef (mefoley) | 11 comments It is very, very odd that the data that came over for people is so hit-or-miss. Long ago and far away when I wrote database software for a living, I knew about such things, and now I really don't, but I'm left with the firm opinion that for them to drop stars and books here and there is *extremely* odd. I just don't see how that could happen; computers are good at things like "take all of this data and copy it over here"--and when such an operation fails, you normally get gibberish. The process doesn't normally leave...data crumbs scattered on the ground at is passes. This suggests to me (and I realize, of course, that I know nothing about it) that the Shelfari database wasn't very well-designed, and there were multiple places in which stars and books were being stored, which is Very Bad Database Design...

Is there any chance that GoodReads has posted these simple instructions anywhere, or does that make too much sense?

Would you, Lesley, be willing please to post these magical instructins, maybe?

Does anybody know whether there's a group for discussing moving-in-from-Shelfari issues?

I think I'm to the point I'd better go check out Leafmark. Yeah, I have time for that...

message 78: by mef (new)

mef (mefoley) | 11 comments Great. Wanted to reply that and quote the line "I'd better go check out Leafmark" but GR won't let me; it insists I include the quote from Lesley that I quoted in the message above.

Yes, it takes time to learn any system new to you. But why doesn't the "include the material I have selected, as a quote in my reply" work in messages further down the chain??? WHY DOES NOTHING EVER, EVER WORK RIGHT?

Ahem, sorry.

Speaking of which, I said (thought GR won't put this into my message header here as a quotation): "I'd better go check out Leafmark".

And I tried.

My system suggested I wanted Leafmark.co.uk, which turns out to sell decorative products made with real leaves. Silly me--

I tried to go to Leafmark.com

My security software tells me the site is dangerous and it doesn't want me to go there.

It is just Leafmark.com, right??

I was (?) allocated a chap called Arturo who did send me several links and simple instructions. I just clicked on them. This was through the GR help group, and then an email contact.

I too am baffled (also a software programmer a lifetime ago, for BHP), as to HOW this can happen.. Our 'flatfiles' (spreadsheets) were updated, each month. As you say meh, it either works or it doesn't...

message 86: by Jgrace (new)

Jgrace I've spent a lot of time correcting shelf errors. It goes faster since I realized I could use the 'settings' tab on my book page to select the elements that I want to correct. Once I selected rating and review to appear on the spreadsheet configuration of my book page, I could scan easily and edit both my stars and missing reviews from that page without going back and forth from individual books. This is probably not a revelation to anyone else, but it made my life easier.

message 89: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments I am so pleased with this new site.. Any books I post to my TBR list I can sort by the average stars of GR reads and copy / paste to my rural library order website. If the searched book is not in their catalogue, they offer a 'suggest to buy'... When they arrive to my local (205 klms away) library, I get an email telling me of my reserves that are 'awaiting collection'.

This week it's :
Our souls at night / Kent Haruf.
Author: Haruf, Kent.
Published: 2015
Orphan train / Christina Baker Kline.
Author: Kline, Christina Baker, 1964-
Published: 2013
Major Pettigrew's last stand / Helen Simonson.
Author: Simonson, Helen.
Published: 2010
The amazing adventures of Kavalier & Clay : a novel / Michael Chabon.
Author: Chabon, Michael.
Published: 2000

SOOO easy for a lazy Lesley...

Reading Orphan Train and not my usual style, but it's so interesting and the mix of young and old characters whose voices are so authentic, I must say I am enjoying it, and will soon finish it.. Clever 'story arc', which moves the convergence closer.

Yesterday Goodreads was having some strange issues uploading issues. So maybe it was related to that. It's very unusual for that kind of thing to happen at Goodreads. Unfortunately it happened ALL the time at Shelfari. I wouldn't get emails for weeks....regularly. I think that was Amazon's lack of maintaining it.

Yes, it is a shame that Amazon did not want to work at maintaining it. But I guess we are all here now.

mef (mefoley) | 11 comments Is there any way to add a book that you own but have not yet read, other than adding it to the "I plan to read" shelf? I don't 'get' Goodreads shelves yet. I wanted to use "I plan to read" for TBR (Once I get rid of all of the books added way back, years ago, when I first tried the site and couldn't get it out of the mode of "would you like to read these? How about these? And these?")

Got three new books and gave up trying to add the two I wasn't reading yet.
