Sprig just wants her older sister Dakota to disappear. She calls her a baby and makes fun of her while all of her friends are around. They get along fine sometimes, but other times are just horrible. A few problems between them can solve everything though.
Both Sprig and Dakota change over the course of the novel. In the beginning of the book, they are off and on with their little arguments. They take their dad to the airport for a business trip and Dakota just pesters Sprig and it annoys her. They try and make it look like they are getting along so they don’t get in trouble, but you can obviously tell that they aren’t getting along. They also go and visit their neighbor that is a widow. They get along just fine there because the old lady takes their minds off of each other. In the middle of Ten Ways to Make My Sister Disappear, Sprig and Dakota hate each other. They don’t get along at all. They are constantly fighting and their mother has to yell at them to stop. Dakota always gets what she wants and it makes Sprig mad. She always gets to talk to her dad first, pick which room she gets to sleep in when she has sleepovers with her friends, and she gets more opportunities than Sprig. Whenever Dakota is with her friend Krystee, she always makes fun of Sprig and her friend Bliss. In the end of the book, Sprig and Dakota find out that they have a lot in common and that they have the same problem in life right now. Sprig helps Dakota solve her problems and Dakota helps Sprig overcome her problems. They make up for everything and hope that they will never get in fights again. However, if they do, they know how to resolve them now.
There are many themes in this book. The main theme that I got out of Ten Ways to Make My Sister Disappear is don’t take the bond of sisterhood for granite. I love my sisters. They mean the world to me. If I didn’t have them in my life, I don’t know what I would do. They help me with all of my problems and help me find solutions to everything. It doesn’t matter what subject it is. Math, English, boys, family, friends, you name it. They know what to do for every situation. We do get in a lot of fights over stupid things, but we make up for it in the end. Dakota and Sprig realized this throughout the book. They hated each other and never wanted to help each other. But as time went on, they started to work together more often, and not get in as many fights. When one of them was down, they would go over and comfort them and try and figure out what the problem was so they could help them. One of the times, they were at a party. Dakota saw her best friend, Krystee, kiss the kid that she liked. She sat under the table and cried forever. When Sprig found her, she told her that Krystee didn’t kiss him. He kissed her. She told her that he had been going around kissing anyone he could. Dakota thanked Sprig and they left the party early. They realized that the bond of sisterhood was better than anything in the whole world.
To me, I can’t find any other book that relates more to my life. I have always wanted my older and younger sister’s to disappear. Sometimes, they just annoy me so much I end up hating them and don’t want to talk to them ever again. We fight a lot, but in the end, we make up for it. This book also relates to me because when I was younger, I knew that my sister wanted me to leave her and her friends alone. But, when we weren’t mad at each other, we would walk across the street to talk to our neighbor who was a little old lady named Carla. I loved talking to her. I just absolutely loved this book. I would recommend this book to any girl that is in a fight with her sister’s or if you don’t want to get in a fight with your sister’s.
