Karen | 262 comments It never fails! When I am reading a book and the main characters get together I always instantly become less enthused by the book. This is especially true when it is a book that is purely a romance. If the romance was just the subplot I'm usually still ok if the main plot has my interest.

I was wondering if I am the only one who gets like that with books?

It's like I'm addicted to that butterflies in your stomach feeling or "the chase" but once the characters get together I quickly lose interest. I am not like this in real life at all but I always surprise myself with this reaction when reading books.

My mind goes oh they got together...great... can't wait for the book to finish lol It becomes a bit of a drag for me to finish books once the characters are together.

Another thing, some authors completely ruin the story after their MCs get together. They have them change personalities and become sappy and mindless. That drives me nuts.

However, I usually don't like it when books end right after the MCs kiss for the first time or something. I like to see one or two chapters or an epilogue of the aftermath. However, having still 25% of the book to go once the MCs get together is too much.

Am I the only one? Am I crazy?! What's wrong with me?!! lol

Once MCs get together how much more book do you like reading?

Do you prefer reading books where the MCs have been together already for a long time?

I do find the same problem in series when the main couple finally get together. I don't like the way some authors handle it by having the couple constantly having disagreements that put their "togetherness" in jeopardy.

Mrsbooks | 267 comments I don't think you're crazy. I get bored too. Personally I find though it's because writers stick with the cliche drama plots. They try to create angst or problems and they make the characters stupid for it.

There are a few books that I still loved once the characters got together but it seems most authors just can't swing it.

Marie | 273 comments I like when they get together, if not early, then not almost immediately before the end. I like it at about 2/3rd of the way through the story. I need a little more than an epilogue to be satisfied.

But it DOES get boring if there isn't more to the story than the romance. But, like Kate mentioned, creating relationship problems just to create some stakes to their relationship doesn't work for me. I usually like a mix of different genre. Most often, with contemporary romances, I'll read a romance paired with some suspense. (Though never one where the hero is a cop. The heroine inevitably becomes the target of a local serial killer/secret stalker and gets kidnapped)

The other problem I have is that sometimes authors will just pick the wrong issue to put the relationship in danger. I read a book once where the heroine fell in love with the guy whose parents were killed by hers. She insinuated herself into his life on purpose and then slept with him, had a relationship, everything while keeping that secret. A line was crossed and I lost all respect for the hero when he took her back. In another book, the heroine fell in love with her rapist, who she forgave because he's from a different culture where women are hunted down once a year and raped as part of a "Wife Hunt". I mean, seriously?
