Yes! That's it! Oh, thank you *so much* Amy, that's made my night!
When I was a kid - some thirty years ago now - I owned an anthology called Sci-Fi! (exclamation mark included). It was a B5-sized hardback and I can still recall the cover, which had a star field and (I think) a planet or two. It was aimed at children, and I can also remember many of the story titles and plots:
- A story called Master Of All The World!, in which an abused schoolboy is manipulated into destroying civilisation by colonising aliens
- The Last Day on Earth, in which the planet was about to be plunged into a cosmic winter
- The Joke's On You, about a sadistic gameshow
- The Turn of a Card, about a group of grunts holed up in a cave with a monster outside
- one about two aliens who pursue a boy through a space-bound leisure complex; they turn out to be allergic to snow
- one about a group of people who rode giant bugs for sport
- one about a father and daughter who owned an underwater research colony
There were also at least two about a group of space travellers, one of whom was called McHarg (he had a sidekick named Dekker / Decker), which may have been a recurring series published elsewhere.
I cannot find this _anywhere_. I've Googled story titles and character names. I've asked in various groups, without success. I've searched extensively on Amazon but as you can imagine it is nigh on impossible to find the book you need when it's called 'Sci-Fi!'. The only hope I have is that someone out there either still owns it or might recall enough information to be able to tell me who published it, which would narrow down the search.
Please help if you can! I have been looking for this book for years!
