Fran | 12278 comments The Yahtzee Challenge - February 1,2016- February 28, 2017

Well, it's really our version of Yahtzee ;)

A big thank you to Juliet for the idea of using Yahtzee, the dice game, for a challenge.

Here is the link to the real Yahtzee game if you would like to see how the real game works.

Join us in our version of Yahtzee. This challenge will be held from February. 1, 2016 to February 28, 2017.

It's a 13 month challenge, with the participant 'rolling the dice' once a month. The dice need to be rolled between the 25th of the month before and the 5th of the current challenge month. You will then have the rest of the month to complete that month's task.

Only one task can be completed each month. There will be no scorekeeping, instead, you will put the title of the book(s) and date you completed the task next to the task name. This means you have completed that task for the month and you cannot do the same task again.

Random.org Dice Roller- http://www.random.org/dice/

Be sure to set the dice roller to 5 dice for your first roll.

Participants are to roll once a month. Using random.org, roll 5 dice. Re-roll only the number of dice you want to throw back. Do that again for the third roll. You may be happy with your first or second roll. There is no need to roll further.

If you cannot fit your 'roll' into any remaining task that you have, there will be an alternate task to complete. The alternate task will change each month. If you need to use an alternate task, please put the word 'alternate' in an empty task space along with the date completed.

Minimum page count of 100 pages unless specified for the task. Re-reads allowed, as well as audio-books.

There will be two threads for this challenge. A Discussion/Questions thread here, and another thread just for your progress. Please update your original post for this challenge. All record keeping should be kept to your one original post :)

Yahtzee Challenge-

For Ones - Sixes - you need 3 of the same number to claim that task. It could be more, but at least 3

Ones - Read a book with a one word title OR the first book in a series
Twos- Read a book with a two word title OR the second book in a series
Threes- Read a book with a three word title OR the third book in a series
Fours- Read a book with a four word title OR the fouth book in a series
Fives- Read a book with a five word title OR the fifth book in a series
Sixes- Read a book with a six word title OR the sixth book in a series

3 of a kind-3 of the same number-Read a book with 3 of the same letters in the Author's name.

4 of a kind-4 of the same number- Read a book with a 4 in the page count OR a book with the word 'Four' or 'For' in the title.

Full House-2 of the same number and 3 of the same number- Read a book with 2 or 3 people (or any living being, i.e. aliens, animals) on the cover

Sm.Straight-4 numbers in a row (i.e. 2,3,4,5) - Read a book with a page count between 100-250 pages.

Lg.Straight-5 numbers in a row (1,2,3,4,5 or 2,3,4,5,6)- Read a book with a page count over 250 pages.

YAHTZEE (5 of the same number)-Read any book of your choice

Chance (for when your roll doesn't fit anywhere else)- Read a book by a new author, take a
chance ;)

An example of an alternative roll -

December (for example)-
If your roll does not fit any of your remaining categories, read a book that has been on your TBR for longer than 6 months.

Example of a roll-

Using random.org / dice roller, I rolled 5 dice.

I rolled a 6,2,6,2,3

I will keep the two 6s and re-roll the other three.

I rolled a 1,5,3 - they don't help me so I will re-roll three dice.

I rolled a 3,4,5 - yay for me! I will use my 3,4,5,6 from my 3,4,5,6,6 roll and read the task for the small straight.

When I am done reading a book with a page count between 100-250 pages, I will post the date I completed it along with the title of the book..

Juliet (yiinochi) Back to participate! 2015 was a busy year for me! Travelling for work every 2 months is draining my energy. I'm going to start 2016 afresh!

Jane | 548 comments I will be playing again but as I expect to have a few months witout internet acces I have a question.

Would it be okay if I roll with real dice and add the result when I return?

Or do I wait till I return and then do alternate tasks for the missing months?

message 13: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Jane!

If you roll your real dice between the correct time period for rolling each month, you can play as usual. You can count your rolls towards the regular tasks :). If you could keep track of your rolls and tasks used while off the internet and post when you are back on that would be great :)

Fran | 12278 comments @Vilda, I'm sorry, you can see the fourth person pretty well so I'm going to say it doesn't work.

@Roger, as long as one edition has the correct page number, you can use it. It doesn't matter which edition you actually read :)

message 19: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Armi,

No, the living things don't have to be the same species. So a dog and cat, person and bird and wolf, etc. work :)

message 20: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Vilda,

Sure, as long as your book choice has 2 or 3 living things on the cover you can use it for Full House :)

message 21: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I hope everyone is enjoying their March reads!

If you've read something you really enjoyed for the Yahtzee Challenge, feel free to share it here, in this thread!

We are always looking for new, good reads!

message 23: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi ravenbleu!

Yes! You can roll the dice for July starting on June 25th.
If you would like to catch up and fill in the previous months, you can start reading books for the Alternate Tasks for the previous months now :)

message 24: by Ravenbleu (new)

Ravenbleu | 56 comments Hi! Fran.
Can I backdate what I read in these months or do I have to read new books??

message 25: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments If the book fits the alternate task then you can backdate and use it :)
