Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm not, with the exception of the Harry Potter series, and even those I've only re-read once since the last book was released. I always find that the lure of reading something new (and ticking an imaginary box for another new book read) always wins out over a re-read.

However, when it comes to movies, I'm the complete opposite. I will almost always go for rewatching an old favourite rather than seeing something new.

I'm really interested to see what everyone else is like!

message 2: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments There are movies I re-watch every year (or every 2 years).

Books are more complicated because I usually remember during 2-3 years the ones I liked enough for a re-read. I re-read a lot some series or favorite books, but it happens less now I've access to ebooks and have this never ending amazing to read list :)

Miki Mackennedy | 2 comments I am not. I have re-read some of the classics from high school with a book club and I have to admit that there is definitely a different feel to some of them when you read them as an adult.

message 4: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments I am very lucky, I forget! So after a couple of years I can re-read a book and enjoy the same and even have surprises! :D However, there are so many books that I want to read, that I really don't have the time to re-read much

message 5: by MJ (last edited Jan 11, 2016 08:19AM) (new)

MJ | 947 comments I can re-watch a movie many, many times. Books though? Sometimes. If it has been a very long time, I will reread favourite books, but I find I tend to skip over parts and get really impatient. There are too many books I haven't read to be really drawn to the ones I know!

There are a few classics that I want to read again because they were complex and I know I missed out on details the first time through!

message 6: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm planning on two re-reads this year, but both are because of challenges to re-read. I'm giving The Great Gatsby (blergh) another chance, in the hope that my old embittered self appreciates it more than fifteen year old me did. The other is TKAM, and I'm so scared that I won't enjoy it as much as I remembered.

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I definitely reread but usually when I haven't read the book or series in a long time, at least a year minimum. Especially with series, I usually forget what happened earlier and have to start a few books back (sometimes even from the beginning) before reading the new one.

I also find it fun sometimes to reread books I used to love as a kid. For example, I recently reread Leo the Lop which is for young kids but it's a great book.

message 8: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I am like you, Jody, not a re-reader except for Harry Potter. Although when I was young, I was - I read the Count of Monte Christo and the Three Musketeers at least three times each... my mom had a library of classics and I loved the romantics. I also had some favorite kid books that I read over and over.

Nowadays there are too many books so new would lure me, too, but I think I should re-read To Kill a Mockingbird as well.

message 9: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Actually, I did just re-read Charlotte's Web, but I read it to my little spider so that's a little different. I will probably end up re-reading a few children's books because of her, and I'm ok with that. :)

message 10: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments I read occasionally, it depends on my mood and if I need a pick me up. The only books I purchase as hard copies are ones I will re-read.
This year I am re-reading the Harry Potter series this year and Tarzan.

message 11: by star_fire13 (last edited Jan 11, 2016 02:51PM) (new)

star_fire13 | 197 comments I am not a re-reader at all. There are way too many new books coming out every month for me to have time to go back and re-read. I am currently re-reading The Baby-Sitters Club [my blog], but those take no time at all.

message 12: by Elise (new)

Elise (theblackhorizon) I'm not either, despite having some favorites I'd like to return to. Maybe there'll be time someday...

I used to love this series! I've actually been debating re-reading some of them, but there are so many I don't think I would have the time to really commit to it properly (even though they are all pretty quick reads).

message 14: by Siena (new)

Siena Unfiltered If I'm going to reread a book, then I feel like it's one that's worthwhile in more ways than one-and I also know it's especially unique in its own ways because I rarely make the decision to reread. When I was younger, I didn't really understand the point; but as a young adult reader, I can perceive the feeling of wanting to re-enter the world and experience the characters a second time! I've reread Colleen Hoover's Maybe Someday, Sylvain Reynard's Gabriel's Inferno, and upon countless times the Harry Potter series!

message 15: by star_fire13 (new)

star_fire13 | 197 comments Yeah, I'm planning on doing 6 per month or so for now. Maybe over the summer I'll do more. Either way, it's going to take me YEARS to get through everything haha but I think it'll be fun and interesting to do.

message 16: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments I mostly read new books, but there is no resisting the call of old favourites. There is always something you'll have missed, so rereading is definitely worth the effort for a story you love. The main thing that slows my rereading is the fact that as I update on Goodreads my scores on previous reading challenges goes down. Otherwise, I read what I feel like when I feel like.

message 17: by Michelle (last edited Jan 12, 2016 06:46PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I love re-reading books I love. It's like catching up with an old friend. I do like to mostly read new to me but my first two reads of the year were re-reads.

I'm like this with movies too. I re-watch my favorites dozens of times. If I really thought of how many times I've watched Home Alone and Hocus Pocus since my childhood, I'd probably blow my own mind.

message 18: by Abigale (new)

Abigale (ladyabigale) There is one book i try to reread every year and it's The Phantom Tollbooth. It's so cleverly written, I pick up something I missed the previous read *every time*. If you haven't read it, please do. Share with your (or your friends) children, as well. It's a good read-together book and it's a quick read.

message 19: by Mai (new)

Mai | 102 comments there are a few books that I will try to re-read at least once a year.

message 20: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments It depends on how much I like and/or love a book. I'll re-read the Harry Potter series every few years, and I'll re-read favourite books if I have the urge to experience the story again, and sometimes I'll re-read a book from my childhood if I get a sudden onset of nostalgia for it. Besides that, I generally don't re-read books as there are just too many new books I want to read.

message 21: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (frijoljpg) Personally I do like re-reading but only after a few years when I've forgotten most of the small details. For example I recently realized that its been about seven years since I read The Book Thief and I really want to reread it! Other times I will reread books before a new release to remember important information (looking at you A Song of Ice and Fire, its been three years). I've actually begun collecting books from series I plan on rereading so I can just marathon them. (Cirque Du Freak, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Demon's Lexicon among others)

Generally I read waaaay more new reads than rereads but I never feel as if its time wasted and have yet to be horrified by younger me's taste which probably contributes. XD

There is one book that I come back to a lot almost every year though, Black Beauty which is really weird because it has a lot of religious overtones and I am not a very religious person but I have this intense childhood nostalgia for it omg. I first read it when I was like ten and it has some dark themes. My dad who gave it me is not a reader and English is not a language he feels comfortable with so I know he didn't look it over before handing it to me lol Does anyone else have a book they keep coming back too?

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Coolington | 4 comments I don't re-read books. I feel as if I can only read so many books in my lifetime and if I re-read a book, that's a unique book I'm missing out on.

message 23: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I completely agree with you Sarah

message 24: by Blake (new)

Blake Jansen | 3 comments Most definitely a re-reader. You watch a great movie more then once don't you?

message 25: by Night Owl (last edited Apr 24, 2016 12:37AM) (new)

Night Owl Reader (allnightreading) Not as much, but if the book is particularly good, then I do reread it! And here is what I think, if a book is so good that I have the urge to reread it, then I consider it a worthy to buy book; that's how I determine if a novel is worthy to buy. I should say, now it is! I didn't think of this until like two years ago! I would use to buy lots of books on a whim, and I hate that feeling of having purchased a book that I didn't end up reading, and now it's just sitting there collecting dust. So, I borrow from the local libraries or borrow from online libraries, and read it to determine if I liked it enough or not, and then make the decision of whether or not to buy the book. Sometimes, I still buy books on a whim though, but not that much.

message 26: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Sarah, that's a great idea to have a manageable size library and to only feel happy when you look at it! I recently gave up a lot of books that I knew I wouldn't read again. I'm now left with half my collection and I'm able to display my favorites!

message 27: by Night Owl (last edited May 01, 2016 11:48PM) (new)

Night Owl Reader (allnightreading) Lol That's the idea that didn't really happen because I already buy a lot of books on a whim when I was younger....Ugghhh....soooooo stupid...and I would give them away, but my friends are not big readers. Those of my friends that are big readers, can't read very well in English, so...

message 28: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Absolutely! I reread Dracula, Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, the works of Jane Austen regularly.

Also the In Death series is my go to audiobooks when I'm feeling down or ill.

message 29: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I am not a re-reader, a re-watcher or a re-listener. I find my mind wanders too much if I already know what is going to happen in the story.

message 30: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3310 comments I re-read books by Barbara Pym just because they're so funny. Plus they're set in small English villages and I find that soothing for some reason.

I've also re-read Jane Eyre every ten years or so. I'm re-reading it for the PopSugar Challenge this year.

I've also started re-reading books that I just don't remember anymore but others are reading now - books I read in the 70s and 80s!

message 31: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm re-reading it for the PopSugar Challenge this year.

Me too. I'm doing it for the book and its prequel, Wide Sargasso Sea

Have you started? We could try a buddy read. What order are you going to read them in. I'm planning on reading Jane Eyre, then Wide Sargasso Sea!

message 34: by Karen (new)

Karen Depends on the book. Not usually, but I will sometimes read ones I really like more than once. I have read Murder on the Orient Express and others of christie's 3 times. Other books also. Usually only 2x at the most, though. I read: The Ice Princess for the 2nd time just last year.

message 35: by DJ (new)

DJ MacLennan (djmac) | 12 comments I have always went back to books I like sometimes years apart.
I find your understanding, outlook, and over all perspective of a book
can change a great deal, which is no bad thing

message 36: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments I rarely re-read. I used to more, but after having joined GR, I've realised just how few books I manage to read per year. It really is scary seeing also the number of new releases each month. *deep dissatisfied sigh* Not enough hours in a day.

message 37: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Maloney (desertrose0601) Occasionally I do if it's been a few years and the book is still on my mind. Harry Potter series is definitely one of those I like to re-read occasionally. I've also reread The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle about a dozen times (it's probably time to read it again, actually!). I've read Twilight twice. I've read Diary of Anne Frank and also The Hiding Place at least 3 times. I feel like some books just need a revisit every so often and I'm fine with that. Most books I'll only read once, but I usually reread at least one or two books every year.

message 38: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments Absolutely.

message 39: by Jody (last edited Mar 19, 2017 03:35AM) (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I've become a bit of a re-reader! I've recently re-read a few books from my school years, and interestingly, the ones I remember enjoying (Little Women and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe), I didn't enjoy, and the one I really didn't like, The Great Gatsby, I really enjoyed. I also re-read Oedipus Rex, and loved it as much as I did in high school. Planning on more already!

message 40: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 242 comments I'm generally not a re-reader because my TBR list is ridiculously long (and continuing to grow thanks to the GR community!). But one of my personal challenges over the next several years is to read more classics. I didn't read many in school, and the few that I did read I don't remember except for the general like/dislike feeling. I might reread a few of those, because I feel if I don't it is a little like cheating to check them off of my list of classics TBR.

message 41: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments Generally, I'm not. I tend not to re-read books, especially since joining Goodreads and realizing how many books I want to read. Even less with the ATY Challenge because now I've planned out most of the books I've read over the last couple years.

That said, there are a few favourites I've re-read a couple of times, and sometimes I'll read through books in a series to remember what happened before reading the next book. I plan on re-reading the Kingkiller Chronicles, whenever we get news that book 3 will be released...

message 42: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Brooke, I feel a little bit the same, plus I know that my younger self couldn't possibly appreciate a few of the books assigned back in school. My next reread I have planned is Jane Eyre - I remember being fairly ambivalent towards it, so I'm interested to see which way I swing this time.

message 43: by Marie (UK) (last edited Nov 14, 2017 02:53PM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 484 comments there are some books that are worth re read. I like to find something i didn't notice las time on a reread here are some of my best reread

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Sophie's World

Pride and Prejudice

To Kill a Mockingbird

message 44: by Tracy (last edited Nov 14, 2017 03:25PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I want to read ALL THE BOOKS!!!! so there's precious little time to re-read. That being said, when I was younger I would re-read like crazy! I can't even count the number of times I've re-read A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, Black Beauty, The Diary of a Young Girl, The Black Stallion, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Witch Saga series, The Witching Hour, probably most of Stephan King's earlier works and also John Saul. Possibly some Dean Koontz.

As an adult, I've re-read Harry Potter Boxset, The Twilight Saga and the Outlander series several times. I will also re-read early books in a series if I have one I haven't read and its been awhile. Random re-reads for me :The Catcher in the Rye( not as emotional about this as a grown up), The Pilot's Wife and The Last Time They Met by Anita Shreve which both felt very personal to me.

Yup. I'm a re-reader :-)

message 45: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (ParkerGray) | 7 comments Lord, no. Re-watching movies is different (to me at least) because they require less time and mental exertion than reading a book. I try to use my time and attention carefully and there are sooo many books out there on my to-read list. The exception to this rule is comic books and graphic novels, since they're quick and visual like movies are. Plus there's the nostalgia factor since I read a lot of them as a teenager, so rereading them is like opening little time capsules.
