Book synopsis:
The fourth Discworld novel.
Although the scythe isn't pre-eminent among the weapons of war, anyone who has been on the wrong end of, say, a peasants' revolt will know that in skilled hands it is fearsome.
For Mort however, it is about to become one of the tools of his trade. From henceforth, Death is no longer going to be the end, merely the means to an end. He has received an offer he can't refuse. As Death's apprentice he'll have free board, use of the company horse and being dead isn't compulsory. It's the dream job until he discovers that it can be a killer on his love life.

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Hooray! Thank you, Mods, for creating a thread for us! I'm excited to start Mort. Not only is it the fourth Discworld book, a series I recently started and am loving (and collecting, lol), but it's also the first book in the Discworld - Death series. And I LOVE the character of Death! I'm so excited to start this book. :-)

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Ang, I started Mort today! I haven't made it very far into it, yet, because of various distractions, but I found two laugh-out-loud quotes in the first six pages of my 295-page book. :-)

Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.
But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
This one was from page one. lol! :-)

Here's the other quote I'm in love with:
Mort was interested in lots of things. ... Then there was the puzzle of why the sun came out during the day, instead of at night when the light would come in useful.
lol!

Have you started it? How are you enjoying it so far?

Marla | 1803 comments I am on team Discworld in challenge in another group, so I thought I might read one and since you are buddy reading Mort, may I join you? But my book has come in from the library yet.

Of course you can join us! :-) I've already finished Mort, but when you get it and start reading, just jump in here to comment with anything you want to share. I'm still following the discussion (obviously, since I saw your post, lol) so I'll pop back in to talk with you about it. :-)

Marla | 1803 comments Thanks Jen, I will.

lol! That was a good - and funny! - scene! :-)

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments I started reading the DW books with Mort as the first -- I'm not a huge fantasy reader but my partner loves these books and thought I'd really like the Death character, so we started with Mort as #1 in the Death novels, per the graphic here.

And my partner was right! I love Death! We've read Mort and then Reaper Man now, outloud to each other and it's a lot of fun to read IN DEATH'S VERY LOW VOICE. Haha. :)

I'm still not sold on fantasy completely, but Pratchett's writing is hilarious and well done, so I'll probably end up reading more of the Death novels.

Death is in more than just the "Death" books, Ray. I'm 99.9% positive he was in Discworld #1, The Color of Magic. I can't really remember if he was in books two or three. I want to say he was, but I just can't remember for sure.

I wanted/want to, but no, I "stopped" after Mort. Too many other books clamored for my attention. Without a buddy pushing me to read, I just haven't been able to make time for them. :-(

Do you want to read book five? Sourcery? :-)

Does your library have a free ILL (Interlibrary Loan) program? Maybe they could find (or buy?) a copy for you to read?

Let me know if you're able to get it and want to buddy read it. I own it (I have a print edition), so I can read it any time you're ready. :-)

June works for me. lol I'd just love to read it with a buddy. ;-)

Sounds good! :-)

And I'm sorry for the late reply. I didn't get a notification about your comment, for some reason, and only just noticed that there was "1 new reply" in here.
